In 1990, she was one of the first Black American ballerinas to become a principal for a major dance company. She appeared in many ballets such as Don Quixote, Cleopatra, and The Nutcracker. She retired from the Houston Ballet in 2006 and retired from dance altogether in 2009. In 2016, Anderson had her pointe shoes from her final performance placed in the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.Anderson was born in Houston, Texas, on February 19, 1965, the only child of Lawrence Anderson and Doris Parker-Morales. Anderson initially took both dance and music lessons, intending to go into musical theater, but had to pick one due to the cost. She chose dance after her mother took her to a performance of Arthur Mitchell's Dance Theatre of Harlem Black ballet company, resolving to become a professional dancer. From the age of seven she trained at Houston Ballet's Ben Stevenson Academy. After starting lessons at the academy, Anderson performed in the ballet company's first production of The Nutcracker on December 28, 1972. She attended the Houston Independent School District and graduated from Lamar High School in 1982.Anderson joined the Houston Ballet in 1983 at age 18 in the corps de ballet, and she was promoted to soloist four years later. In 1990, she became the first Black American principal dancer at the Houston Ballet. She was only the second Black American female ballet dancer to be promoted to principal dancer at any major American ballet company, and during her career was the only Black American prima ballerina at the head of a major ballet company anywhere in the world. Anderson originated the role of Cleopatra in the ballet of the same name created by Ben Stevenson, and her performance garnered her critical acclaim and international fame. In 1990, Anderson was the recipient of the Special Jury Award at the International Ballet Competition, and she received the International Critics Award. Gibbs made history when she became the first Black American female Kickboxing ISKA World Champion, earning the name "The Most Dangerous Woman in the World.". Between 1994 and 1999, she was a three-time world kickboxing champion; between 1986 and 1988, she was a three-time world taekwondo champion; and between 1995 and 2001, Gibbs — fighting as “Lady Jack Johnson” — was a world class professional boxer. During her career, she amassed a record of 16 wins, 0 losses, and 15 KOs.Fredia Gibbs was born in Chester, Pennsylvania on July 8, 1963. In 1981, she received dual scholarships in basketball and track to Temple University in Philadelphia, but withdrew in 1982 and switched to Cabrini University on a basketball scholarship while majoring in marketing. Gibbs excelled as an All-American for three consecutive years for basketball at Cabrini University. After graduating, she was hired to play professional basketball for Germany in the European Women's Professional Basketball League. She led her team to its first European Cup. In 1990, after moving to North Hollywood, California, Gibbs took up kickboxing at The Jet Kickboxing Training Center, and Muay Thai Kickboxing at the Muay Thai Academy of America. Over the course of her career, she won three world titles in Tae Kwon Do before beginning to kickbox professionally. She won "The Battle of the Masters" PPV show to win the World Championship in April 1994; this made Gibbs the first Black American woman to win the world kickboxing championship for the International Sport Karate Association (ISKA) and earned her the nickname “The Most Dangerous Woman In The World.” During her professional kickboxing career, she held ISKA, WKA, and WKF World Titles, before retiring in 2003.Her fight gear is displayed at the Sports Legend of Delaware County Museum. She participated in drag balls during her youth, and came out as a transgender woman as a teenager in the late 1950s. After having been kicked out of two colleges for the outward expression of her identity, she moved from Chicago to New York City, becoming a regular at the famous LGBT Stonewall Inn bar in Greenwich Village. On June 28, 1969, Griffin-Gracy was in the Stonewall Inn when the bar was raided by police, leading to the Stonewall riots. The Stonewall Riots are considered the birthplace of the modern LGBT rights movement. Griffin-Gracy was a leader in the riots, along with her friends Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera and Storme DeLarverie, but was knocked out by a police officer and taken into custody. She reported that a corrections officer broke her jaw while she was in prison.Griffin-Gracy took note of the prison conditions, such as beatings and strip searches, particularly for Black incarcerated trans youth. While imprisoned at Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York, she met Frank Smith, who had led prison riots at Attica. Smith became a mentor to Griffin-Gracy, encouraging her to fight back against police brutality and the prison state, and to educate herself about Black history to address the root causes of racism, inequality, and oppression. After being released, she moved to San Diego in 1978 and began organizing anti-prison community efforts and grassroots movements to address community issues before police become involved. She initially started with work at a local food bank, and later provided direct services for trans women who were incarcerated, suffering from addiction, or homeless. Griffin-Gracy then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid 1990s, where she served on multiple HIV/AIDS organizations, including the Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center.In 2005, she began working at the Transgender Gender Variant Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP) shortly after it was founded. She served as the Executive Director of the project, leading direct service efforts and personalized care to incarcerated Black trans women, including writing letters, meeting with prisoners, helping newly released individuals enroll in college and rehabilitation programs, and find jobs. After retiring from the organization in 2015, she founded the Griffin-Gracy Historical Retreat and Educational Center, known as the House of GG, as a safe haven and retreat house for the Black transgender community in Little Rock, Arkansas. A documentary on her life, titled 'Major!,' was released in 2015 and portrays Griffin-Gracy's role as an activist and mentor in the transgender community since the 1960s. In 2018, she was honored with the Susan Hyde Award for Longevity in the Movement. Cotten is considered a key figure in both American & British rock and folk musical history; a self-taught left-handed guitarist, her music is foundational to popular folk music due to her distinct and original style.Cotten was born in 1893 to a musical family in North Carolina. A self-taught prodigy, by the age of 8, she was composing songs. ("Freight Train", a song written when she was 13, would go on to become her most recognized.) In 1910, at the age of 17, she married & had a daughter, & for the next 40 years, retired from guitar playing to take care of her family. In the later half of the 1950s, Cotten began working as a housekeeper & nanny for the Seeger family, which was made up of famous composers & musicologists. Taking note of the songs Cotten would sing would while working in their home, Mike Seeger began making recordings of her. These recordings were released in 1958; the album was re-released on Smithsonian folk music imprint Folkways Records as 'Freight Train and Other North Carolina Folk Songs and Tunes' in 1989. Another member of the Seeger family, folksinger Peggy Seeger, performed Cotten’s song "Freight Train" when she traveled to England. It became very popular in UK folk music circles, & a pair of British songwriters stole the song, copyrighting it as their own composition & receiving royalties for years. The song also became a hit in the United States. When Cotten & the influential Seeger family heard of the song’s popularity in the US & overseas, they successfully sued for correct attribution of Cotten as the songwriter & owner of the copyright. She was subsequently paid royalties for the song. After her first album was released, she began playing concerts in 1960, when she was 67 years old. She went on to play shows & festivals with big names in the folk revival scene, & in 1967, when she was in her mid-70s, she recorded her second album, ‘Shake Sugaree,’ followed by her third, ‘When I'm Gone.’ Using profits from touring, record releases and awards, Cotten was able to buy a house in Syracuse, New York. She continued touring and releasing records well into her 80s. In 1984, at the age of 91, she was named a National Heritage Fellow and won the Grammy Award for Best Ethnic or Traditional Recording, for her fourth album 'Elizabeth Cotten Live!'.Elizabeth Cotten died on June 29, 1987 in Syracuse, New York, at the age of 94. In 2012, a bronze casting of her was unveiled in a park near Syracuse University that is also named for her. She has previously served as Senior Vice President of Research and Development at AT&T, where she worked on advancing Voice over Internet Protocol technologies, furthering the capabilities of audio and video conferencing. Her work converted voice data into digital signals that can be easily transmitted over the internet rather than using traditional phone lines, making videoconferencing and remote work through apps like Zoom possible.Born in 1955 in Pennsylvania, Croak grew up in New York City where she showed an early interest in engineering: she would follow engineers and plumbers around her house to learn how they fixed things. She attended Princeton University and completed her doctoral studies at the University of Southern California in 1982, specializing in social psychology and quantitative analysis. She joined AT&T (then known as Bell) Labs in 1982, with a position in the Human Factors research division, looking at how technology could be used to positively impact people’s lives. She subsequently went on to work on network engineering, where she examined the potential of digital telecommunications rather than the use of a traditional phone line. She was an early advocate of switching from wired phone technology to wireless internet protocol, and holds more than two hundred patents. She filed the patent for text-based donations to charity in 2005, and this capability revolutionized how people both text and donate money to charitable organizations. She was the first Black American librarian in the Los Angeles Public Library system. Hired in 1927, she was instrumental in preserving the history and cultural heritage of early Black Angelenos.Matthews was born in Pensacola, Florida in 1905, the second of three children born to Fannie and Reuben Matthews. Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was two years old, where her parents established a painting business. Matthews graduated high school in 1922, and spent two years at UCLA. She subsequently transferred to UC Berkeley, where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1926 and a certificate in librarianship in 1927. After returning to Los Angeles, Matthews sought employment as a librarian in the Los Angeles Public Library. She was hired as a substitute librarian and then, three months later, promoted to full-time librarian at LAPL's Robert Louis Stevenson Branch Library and becoming the first Black American librarian in the Los Angeles Public Library system.When she realized how few resources the library system held on Black history, Matthews began collecting materials on the subject; while working at the Helen Hunt Jackson branch, Matthews discovered "a small collection of books on the Negro" and began building that into a substantial research collection documenting the contributions made by Black Americans to California's history and culture. Matthews rose to the position of branch librarian within 10 years, and then took a leave of absence to earn a master's degree in library science from the University of Chicago Graduate Library School in 1945. After she returned to Los Angeles, she was promoted to regional librarian, supervising twelve branch libraries in LAPL’s South Central region.As part of her commitment to honor Black American contributions to history and culture, Matthews was an early supporter of Carter G. Woodson in his efforts to establish a "Negro History Week" (now known as Black History Month), lobbying the city of Los Angeles until Negro History Week was recognized there in 1929. Matthews also amassed a collection of approximately 4,600 black-and-white photographs documenting the Black American experience in Los Angeles and California, including scenes depicting the founding of the city. The Miriam Matthews Photograph collection chronicles life, politics, community service, entertainers, artists, black-owned businesses and the civil rights movement in Los Angeles in the 1960s. For her role in community preservation, Matthews has been called the “dean of Los Angeles Black history.” After more than three decades of employment, she retired from the Los Angeles Public Library in 1960. During retirement, Matthews dedicated herself to numerous groups promoting libraries and Black history. In 1996, Matthews moved to Mercer Island, Washington to be near her nephew. She died in Mercer Island on June 23, 2003, at the age of 97. In 2004, the Hyde Park Branch Library was renamed after Matthews. She assisted thousands of Black American women in education and employment through her schools and organizations.Nannie H. Burroughs was born on May 2, 1879 in Virginia, the eldest child of John and Jennie Burroughs. After her father’s death, in 1883, Burroughs & her mother relocated to D.C. In DC, Burroughs attended M Street High School, where she put together her first organization, the Harriet Beecher Stowe Literary Society. Upon graduating with honors in 1896, Burroughs sought work as a domestic-science teacher in the District of Columbia Public Schools, but was unable to find a position due to her race & social status. The experience would later inspire her to establish a training school for low-income & low social status Black women & girls.Leaving DC to look for work, from 1898 to 1908 Burroughs was employed in Louisville, Kentucky as an editorial secretary and bookkeeper of the National Baptist Convention. Burroughs became a leader in the National Baptist Convention, helping to build the organization from the ground up after gaining fame and notoriety from a speech titled ‘How the Sisters Are Hindered from Helping,’ given in 1900 at a convention in Virginia. While in Louisville, she co-founded the Women's Industrial Club, which held domestic science & management courses and classes in typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, & sewing.Returning to DC in 1908, Burroughs opened the National Training School at 601 50th St NE. The school provided evening classes for women who had no other means for education, taught by Burroughs herself. Burroughs eventually educated thousands of Black women from all over the nation during her lifetime. She sought to teach racial pride & work ethic, creating her own courses that focused on Black history, politics, organizing, and racism aid in addition to domestic work. Students were also trained in domestic science, business, sewing, printing, barbering, & shoe repair. During the first 40 years of the 20th century, the National Training School was hugely influential in the ability of Black American women to obtain a livelihood. Her school & various organizations worked in tandem with the National Association of Colored Women (NACW) which was formed in 1896 and included more than 100 local Black women's clubs. Through her work with the NACW, in 1920, Burroughs also founded the National Association of Wage Earners (NAWE), a union for domestic workers. The NAWE pushed for better wages & working conditions for Black women, served as an employment agency for Black domestic workers, & also operated as a factory, hiring women to sew work dresses, caps, and aprons, which were sold through the mail.Burroughs was active in many other women's clubs and organizations for Black advancement, including Daughters of the Round Table Clubs and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). On May 20, 1961, she passed away in Washington D.C. of natural causes. Three years after her death, the National Training School was renamed the Nannie Helen Burroughs School. She was the first Black American woman to serve in the U.S. Senate. Moseley Braun was also the first Black American U.S. Senator from the Democratic Party, the first woman to defeat an incumbent U.S. Senator in an election, and the first female U.S. Senator from Illinois.Carol Moseley was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 16, 1947. Possessing an early interest in politics, she worked on the campaign of Harold Washington, the first Black American mayor of Chicago. In 1972, she graduated from the University of Chicago School of Law, where she met and later married Michael Braun. Moseley Braun worked in the United States Attorney's office in Chicago from 1973 until 1977. An Assistant United States Attorney, her work in housing, health policy, and environmental law won her the Attorney General's Special Achievement Award. In 1978 she was elected to the Illinois state House of Representatives, becoming the first Black American woman to serve as assistant majority leader in that body. She was the first Black American to hold an executive position in Cook County, which she held for a decade before being elected the Cook County Illinois Recorder of Deeds in 1988. Believing politicians were out of touch with the average American, Moseley-Braun decided to run for Congress. In 1992 she was elected to the Senate, becoming the first Black American woman senator. In the Senate, Moseley-Braun also became the first woman to serve on the Finance Committee, and the second woman to serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee. During her term in the Senate, Moseley-Braun helped create legislation to overhaul school reform, assist divorced and widowed women, and created a National Park Service initiative to fund historic preservation of the Underground Railroad. In 1994, she also authored the Educational Infrastructure Act, which channeled education funds into low-income communities. Moseley Braun was the sole Black American in the Senate during her tenure.Following her time in the Senate, she served as the United States Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa from 1999 to 2001. In both 2000 and 2004 Moseley-Braun ran for President, making her only the second Black woman to seek the Democratic presidential nomination; she also ran for Mayor of Chicago in 2011. Since 2001, Moseley-Braun has taught political science at Morris Brown College and DePaul University, and managed GoodWorks International business consulting company in Chicago. A pioneering pinup model, she was the first black Playmate, first black Playmate of the Month and also worked as a Playboy Bunny in the Playboy Club.Jennifer Jackson grew up on the south side of Chicago and graduated from Emil G. Hirsch High School in 1963. She is the daughter of Clynell Jackson Sr. and Marjorie McGuire Jackson and has eight siblings, one of which is her identical twin.Jackson attended Loop College, now known as Harold Washington College and during school worked as a runway and advertising model. She was employed by Eileen Ford of the Ford Modeling Agency as well as with an agency called Black Beauty, which was nothing but black models. Jackson was the first black model to do Lady Clairol and KOOL cigarettes, appearing in Ebony magazine.While attending college, she went to the Chicago Playboy offices looking for a part-time job as a secretary, but was hired on the spot to become a Playboy Bunny by Hugh Hefner. Her twin sister, Janis Jackson Holmes, also became a Bunny. Hefner also hired Black designer Zelda Wynne Valdez, who went on to design the iconic Playboy Bunny costume.In March 1965, Jackson became the first Black Playmate in Playboy Magazine. She was the most popular Playmate, receiving the most fan mail of any of the other models. Jackson continued to attend school while working as a Bunny, living in her own apartment as opposed to within the Playboy Mansion and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in human services with emphasis on counseling. In the late 70s, she moved to Seattle, Washington, where she worked for the University of Washington and, in 1990, became a social worker. As a social worker, she worked in the sex abuse unit, becoming instrumental in the passage of laws to protect children as well as training and working with foster parents. In 2009, Jackson retired from social work, and she still lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband. Wilson was the first Black American senior zookeeper. She worked at the Baltimore Zoo from 1961 to 1999, caring primarily for gorillas, big cats and elephants, and is considered to have opened doors for Black women and other women of color in zookeeping. Mary Jeannette Wilson was born on Jan. 2, 1937, in West Baltimore, Maryland. Wilson had a passion for animals from a young age and a lack of fear, as evidenced by family stories about her calmly removing birds and bats that had gotten into their home. She attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, then, at age 23, began working at the local zoo in 1961, despite having no experience or formal training. While most women zookeepers at the time were assigned to work with birds and other smaller animals, Wilson worked with big animals from the beginning of her career, specializing in primates, cats and elephants in the Mammal House. 6-feet tall, Wilson was a sports fan and trash talker with a way with animals; she often cared for zoo babies, even taking them home with her at night, which made her stand out in her Baltimore neighborhood for having a house full of snakes, primates, and jungle cats at any given moment. The baby animals raised by Wilson often showed compassion and empathy towards other animals, with one gorilla named Sylvia becoming an adoptive mother to an abandoned gorilla infant at another facility. She retired in 1999 after working 38 years at the zoo, and enjoyed singing, taking long walks, going on cruises, and collecting wooden, glass and china elephants. Wilson kept pet dogs at home and was only known to be afraid of one kind of animal: mice. The zoo still has two otters named after her, Mary and Wilson.Mary J. Wilson died of novel coronavirus/Covid-19 in Randallstown, Md., on May 25, 2020 at the age of 83. Jewel Thais-Williams was born on May 9, 1939 in Gary, Indiana. The fifth of 7 children, Jewel moved with her family to San Diego when she was 4 years old. After high school, she graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in history, realizing that she was a lesbian in her 20s. After working many jobs, Thais-Williams felt that she would not be able to acquire personal wealth without starting her own business, and opened a dress shop with her sister. But in the 1970s an economic downturn closed the store, and she began to look for a recession-proof business venture. Thais-Williams realized that bars generally survived bad times and decided to procure one for herself, despite the fact that in 1973, California laws banned women from tending bar unless they were the owner. After noticing she was often not let in the prominent Westside gay clubs as a Black woman, in 1973 she purchased a club that had previously shunned Black patrons. Putting down $1,000 for the bar and taking out an $18,000 loan, she created Jewel’s Catch One, a seven-room safe haven for Black queer Angelenos. Located on Pico Blvd and affectionately dubbed ‘The Catch’ by its customers, Jewel’s club was the only Black disco in Los Angeles, and one of the first in America. Becoming the epicenter of Black gay nightlife in LA, Catch One attracted a Black star clientele regardless of sexual orientation, that included Luther Vandross, Rick James, Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson, Etta James, Sammy Davis Jr. and Whitney Houston. The club also served as a meeting place for In the Meantime Men, a local gay and bisexual men’s organization, as a shelter and soup kitchen for many LGBT youth who were homeless, and as a community location for Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and political organizations. In 2001 she opened a non-profit free clinic, the Village Health Foundation. Thais-Williams also served on the board of AIDS Project LA, and co-founded both the Minority AIDS Project and the Imani Unidos Food Pantry in South Los Angeles. She and her wife Rue also own and operate Rue’s House, providing services and housing facilities to poor Black women and children living with HIV/AIDS. In 2015, at age 76 and after 42 years of being owner-operator, Thais-Williams sold The Catch. (November 1, 1885 – October 28, 1972) was a civil rights activist and dentistry pioneer. She was the second Black American to graduate from the University of Southern California School of Dentistry, and the first Black American woman to be licensed to practice dentistry in the state of California.Vada Somerville was born Vada Watson on November 1, 1885 in Pomona, California. In 1903, she received a scholarship to the University of Southern California (USC); after graduating from USC, she worked as a bookkeeper and a telephone operator. In 1912, she married John Alexander Somerville, a Doctor of Dental Surgery who she met while they were both in college. The first Black American to graduate from the USC School of Dentistry, Somerville encouraged his wife to go back to school to become a dentist. When she entered dental school at USC, she was the only woman and the only Black American in her class. In 1918, Somerville graduated with her D.D.S. as the second Black American to finish the USC dental program. She then became the first Black woman to be licensed to practice dentistry in the state of California, and practiced for 15 years. The Somerville’s were civic-minded and active in real estate, founding the Hotel Somerville in 1927. The hotel was described as "an elegant, all-Black hostelry that symbolized both the possibilities of racial advancement and the realities of racial segregation." The hotel became a gathering place and activism space for Black Americans who wanted social change, hosting such luminaries as Rosa Parks and W.E.B. Du Bois. In 1928, the building served as the headquarters for the NAACP national convention. Unfortunately, the stock market crash of 1929 and subsequent Great Depression forced the Somerville's to sell the hotel. Renamed the Dunbar Hotel, it remained a center of Black cultural life for decades. After closing as a working hotel, it became a museum with local and national landmark status.Vada Somerville retired from dentistry in 1933. After retiring, she devoted herself full-time to social welfare and civic work, as, before she had even become a dentist, the Somerville’s were community activists, starting the Los Angeles branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in their home in 1914. Vada participated in civil rights activism and community organizations, including the Los Angeles League of Women Voters, the Council on Public Affairs, UCLA's YWCA and the USC Half Century Club. In 1938, Vada was a founder of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Council of Negro Women. In 1948, she helped to co-found the Los Angeles County Human Relations Committee and established the Pilgrim House Community Center, a center to take care of the needs of Black families who migrated to LA during World War II. One of the first women to release electronic music records in the early days of techno and house, Hand is widely credited with opening the door for Black women's participation in the male-dominated techno and electronic music communities. She was known as the "First Lady of Detroit techno". Born on September 15, 1964, and raised in Detroit, Hand moved to New York in the 1980s, where she immersed herself in the club scene. She was deeply influenced by her years spent clubbing at Paradise Garage, listening and dancing to the music of legendary house dj Larry Levan. Falling in love with electronic music, she purchased her own equipment and taught herself to produce and DJ in her bedroom. Hand built a sizable vinyl collection by buying all the records played at Garage and spinning them at home. She also frequented clubs in Chicago as well, meeting legendary producer Frankie Knuckles, The Godfather of House Music. She began to play at local clubs, receiving a residency at Detroit's Zipper's Nightclub, where she picked the DJ name ‘K-Hand’ so as to keep her gender anonymous. In 1990, Hand began spinning her own releases at clubs and founded her own label, named Acacia Records after a Detroit street she had previously lived on. Her debut release was an EP, Think About It, and in 1995, her debut studio album, On A Journey, was released. By the year 2000, she had released seven more albums; one of Detroit's most prolific artists, Hand is responsible for hundreds of high-impact club records. A vinyl enthusiast as well because of its "warm" and "analog" sound, Hand's imprint Acacia Label continues to release new vinyl records as well as re-releases of her back catalogue. Despite her Detroit background, Hand incorporated many Chicago and New York musical influences, such as a more upfront rhythmic style versus the ‘smoother’ house sound of many of her fellow Detroit producers. She frequently utilized the large scale "jack" and "swing" sounds distinctive to Chicago house in her music. Her sound came to be known as the ‘K-HAND’ sound, and is very popular among techno djs to this day. In 2016 Kelli Hand was honored with a Spirit of Detroit Award. The Spirit Of Detroit Award is presented to individuals or groups for "outstanding achievement or service to the citizens of Detroit from Detroit's City Council. In 2017, she was officially named ‘The First Lady of Detroit Techno’ by the city council, honored with a Testimonial Resolution certificate acknowledging her substantial accomplishments in the industry of electronic music. She is considered to have paved the way for other minorities to compete in the sport of figure skating. She was the first Black American inducted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame, and has also been inducted into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame. Mabel Fairbanks was born on November 14, 1915 in the Everglades. After being orphaned at the age of 8, she moved to New York City, where a wealthy woman saw her sleeping on a park bench & offered her room and board as a babysitter in her home overlooking Central Park. Fairbanks began figure skating in the late 1920s, after observing children at the Central Park ice rink. She became fascinated by the ice, & bought a pair of used skates two sizes too big for $1 from a pawn shop. She stuffed them with cotton wool & found her balance on blades by going up and down the stairs in her building, before she began skating at a small rink in Harlem. When she first attempted to skate at the Central Park rink, white youth turned her away, but she returned day after day until she was allowed in, skating in the mornings before the rink opened. As her skills & reputation grew, she was finally allowed into the public rinks. By her early 20s, Fairbanks had formed a novelty act in partnership with a roller skater, & took her ice rink show on the road. Soon, she was skating at large scale shows in Manhattan to mixed-race audiences. During the 1930s, she reached Olympic-caliber skating under the training of 9 time national champion and Olympic figure skater Maribel Vinson Owen. Although she took and passed all of the required competition tests, she was unable to join any of the clubs that sponsored figure skaters because of her race. Fairbanks was also not allowed to compete in the national qualifying event for the Olympics or any national or international competition. Instead, she continued performing in ice shows in New York throughout the 1940s and 50s. After relocating to Los Angeles, she toured internationally, skating with the “Rhapsody On Ice” Show, the Ice Capades in Mexico and later with the famous Ice Follies show as a principal skater. She also appeared in ice shows in Las Vegas, becoming friendly with the "Rat Pack" of Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. After retiring from performing in the 1960s, Fairbanks coached singles and pairs, including Olympic medalists Kristi Yamaguchi, and Atoy Wilson, the first Black American to win the US national championship. In her coaching years, Fairbanks opened the door for other young Blacks to compete in skating by applying for individual memberships from the USPSA (United States Professional Skating Association) without letting them know her students were Black. She forced LA's Culver City skating club to become the first skating institution to admit a Black American in 1965. In 1997, she became the first Black American inducted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Through her activism, she brought to light the intersectionality of race and disability, and worked to tackle ableism in the Black community and racism in the largely white-dominated disability community. Lacy was born in 1937 in Huttig, Arkansas. Educated in segregated elementary schools in Louisiana, when she was 10 her family relocated to Mcloud, California. In California, she attended integrated schools for the first time, but continued to feel the effects of informal segregation, stating many people brought their prejudices with them out West.Lacy was diagnosed with polio at the age of 19, while working on her nursing practical at San Francisco General Hospital in 1956. Her first symptoms were severe headaches and then blurred vision, which made her think she needed glasses; a local physician tested her, and diagnosed her with polio. At Fairmount Hospital, Lacy was placed in an iron lung for two weeks. She switched to a chest respirator and rehabbed for 2-3 years before regaining her strength. However, she remained paralyzed, needing a wheelchair for the rest of her life. After rehab, Lacy went back to San Francisco State University in 1958. Studying speech pathology, she faced blatant ableism and discrimination from the head of the department, who attempted to block her from attending, saying there was no way she would ever be able to become a speech therapist because of her disability.Lacy was admitted to the department despite being told up front she would not become a speech therapist, and chose to attend school anyway, completing her degree and graduating. Even though she excelled in her schoolwork, she was not allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies. After graduating, she helped found the Berkeley Center for Independent Living in 1981. From 1981 to 1994 she served as the director of the Community Resources for Independent Living (CRIL), a nonprofit in Hayward, CA that provides advocacy, mentoring, and other services for people with disabilities. Lacy also served on the California Attorney General’s Commission on Disability, Hayward’s Commission on Personnel and Affirmative Action, and the Mayor’s Disability Council for the city and county of San Francisco. In 1998, Lacy recorded several interviews on her life for UC Berkeley’s oral history archive. As a Black woman in a wheelchair, she sought to educate communities about race and disability, opening up the door for groundbreaking conversations around race, identity, and disability. An advocate for Black American history, Robinson was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant in 2004.Robinson was born Brenda Lynn on February 18, 1940, in Columbus, Ohio. She was raised in Poindexter Village, a neighborhood historically populated by Black Americans. Her father taught her how to work with raw materials and items such as charcoal, glass, leather, seashells, animal hides, clay, rope and wood. He also taught her the use of rabbit-skin glue and his own creation of a substance called HawgMawg- which consisted of brick dust, red clay, mud, glue, twigs, leaves, animal grease, and lime. She attended East High School in Columbus, and received her formal art training at the Columbus Art School (now the Columbus College of Art and Design) from 1957-1960. In 1958, Robinson got a job at the Columbus Public Library, where she did illustrations and also studied the history of the city's Black American neighborhoods. In 1974, she purchased a house which would double as her art studio; in 1979, after taking a trip abroad to study, Robinson adopted the name Aminah, changing her name legally in 1980. In 1990, the Columbus Metropolitan Library commissioned her to create 40-foot panels that would illustrate historic Black American neighborhoods within the city. The large-scale, intricate masterwork, called 'Life in Sellsville' (1871-1900) and 'Life in the Blackberry Patch' (1900-1931), took two years to complete. In 2004, she was awarded the MacArthur ‘Genius Grant.'Her work has been displayed at the Columbus Museum of Art, the Akron Art Museum, the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., the Brooklyn Museum, and more. Robinson has been the subject of nearly 200 solo and group exhibitions, writing & illustrating several art books along with children’s picture books. On May 22, 2015, Robinson died of a heart complication at 75.
