As a professional shooter I often get asked to appraise equipment or get offered gear in return for reviews. Me being me I make it very clear to all that if I find something that doesn’t work with me or I simply feel it to be under par then I will say that. I am not easily bought. That said I recently received an offer from the new lens company Irix asking if I wanted to try their new 15mm f2.4 completely manual Super Wide Angle prime lens. Who am I to say “No”? Seeing as this glass is designed specifically to cater to the specific demands of high megapixel count, full frame sensors and seeing as I’m currently shooting with the 50.6MP Canon offering, the EOS5DSr how could I pass on such an offer?
This short video is an outline of my first impressions of the lens and the features that it offers. Along with the lens and camera I was shooting a motion time-lapse using the Kessler Crane Second Shooter Plus on a TLS Rail, again from Kessler Crane. I guess it’s also just personal taste but I also don’t choose to attach any lanyards or neck straps to my cameras, I just don’t like the fact that they can easily blow in the wind and potentially flap in front of a lens etc. They only take a few minutes to put into place so I take them off whenever I head out for time-lapse shoots.
Settings wise I ramp manually with the ISO and Shutter during the shoots. There are smart apps and hardware out there to simplify that process but I prefer to at least, as a photographer, have some contact with the camera when I’m shooting. It’s too simple to leave it to the machines. That said I use computers for post processing and rely specifically on Adobe Lightroom and LRTimelapse Pro plugin for time-lapse editing. I will be looking to create some editing videos down the line for the new workflow on the EOS5DSr but there are some other time-lapse videos in my collection that address time-lapse editing etc from my EOS5D3 days.
Camera settings started out at ISO100 at f8 for 1/80th and ended up at ISO400 f8 for 2sec. White Balance wise in the Urban setting I normally select Kelvin and dial that to a 3300 temperature setting. Shooting fully manual, one shot RAW with no additional sharpening or contrast. I tend to shoot +2/3OEV to keep the detail in the highlights. I just find it easier that way add LUTS in post if needed, but that’s another ballgame.
