High Voltage Engineering by MG NiasarAfter many months of inactivity, I’m finally back 🙂 with lots of new ideas and videos coming soon! Originally, I planned for my first comeback video to be about a pulse jet engine. But since making it burn clean required a few extra steps, I ended up creating this penny alcohol stove instead, as the initial step to make the pulse jet engine.

After I made my penny can alcohol stove, I noticed that the flames were a bit large, and I wanted to make them smaller. After some careful thought, I came up with a method to control the flame size in a penny can alcohol stove. Two methods were explored, of which the second—using water to cool the can and adjust its temperature—proved effective for controlling the flame size. Yesterday, I got three sheep hearts and roasted some of them in a pan with onion and tomato, but they didn’t turn out very tasty. Normally, grilled heart is delicious, but I wasn’t motivated to set up a coal fire outside. Since I don’t have a gas burner at home, I decided to use my torch to grill them indoors. Meanwhile, a curious spider appeared, seemingly checking out the fire nearby 😅. I had to gently guide it away. In the background, a prayer that is traditionally broadcast on TV in Iran during Sahari is being played. I had been sick for the past two weeks, but thankfully, I’m almost fully recovered now. Thanks God.

Several times during the past years I promised myself that when my university load become more manageable and when this channel grows a bit larger I will open another Youtube channel and will offer math Olympiad lectures, maybe it will be helpful for students across the globe specially for students in the Netherlands and Sweden, the two countries that have hosted me for many years. In Iran we have a very advance system for those students who would like to study math, physics, chemistry etc Olympiads. When I was at high school we had several very high quality teachers who trained a few of us for math Olympiad in lectures after the normal school hours. We tried silicone rubber and carbon black at university but could not achieve much conductivity. Our silicone rubber could not take much of carbon black in it and with high percentage of carbon black it turned into a solid paste which could not be cured. I therefore decided to take the matter to home and solve the issue at home. I bought Nail hardener and acrylic varnish from Action shop (The Netherlands), pretty cheap, each for less than 1.5 Euro. Graphite powder was purchased from Ali express for ~ 5 Euro per 100 ml. I put the link in the description. Graphite powered is usually used as lubricant (for example if you want to lubricate piston of a model striling engine best is to use graphite powder). It was found that for resistances in order-of 100s of Ohm/cm to a few kOhm/cm, 30% ratio or higher of graphite powder to nail hardener produce good results. For resistances in order of 10s of kOhm/cm to MOhm/cm 30% ratio or higher graphite powder to acrylic varnish gives good results.

I thought some people might have issue paying their heating cost, hence they are going to suffer the cold of the winter. In this video I explain a very old Iranian method that you can use to stay warm during the cold months with very minimum electricity cost. This is called Korsi ( in Persian کرسی ), which is basically a wooden table of height ~0.5 meter and width and length of ~1 m. The table is covered with blanket and a heater (in modern days an electric heater, while in the past a pot filled with ash and fired charcoal). The reduced volume and less surface area of this space and high thermal resistance of the wall due to blankets, creates a small yet very warm space that only need a small amount of heat to stay very warm. You need to put your leg under it and stay warm during the day and night, also you can sleep under it and stay warm while other parts of your house is cold. if used properly, with only ~ 1-2 kwh you can stay warm for 24 h. It has some risks such as starting a fire, or burning your foot if you touch it to a hot heater, but in general is safe. Most Iranian people have used it in the past, but now a days due to widespread gas pipeline across the country, only is sometimes used in villages, or in case someone wants to renew the memories of the past.

In my previous videos about the Thermo-acoustic heat engine I used a piece of steel wool, while in order to improve the performance of the engine i injected water into the engine. usually after 10s of times of operation eventually the steel wool get rusted and destroyed because of interaction with hot steam. I wanted to remove it or replace it with another material. After some work, and a hint from one of my commentators, i changed the design so that the heat engine works without steel wool. With this current design the engine is not going to go bad from internal material. the walls of the tin cans will rust at relatively low speed. The glass beads will last long. Only the piston has to be improved which i am working on it. With this video i show you how to make a new design of the Rice engine (even though i have not used rice inside the engine, but it is fair that the name stays rice engine)

I tried to test the impact of different sizes of aluminum support structure on the performance of the engine, but the results were not conclusive. I figured out that it is important for the engine to have water vapor filled the whole volume. To achieve that I created a second hole on top of the engine so that when water is injected from the lower section, the vapor fills the cylinder and excess pressure exit from the top whole. This structure to my surprise resulted to a self-starting thermoacoustic engine, which is fantastic.
The rice engine although performs fanatically over short run, but its long term performance is very poor. The rice gradually get soften and sticks together, blocking the movement of air. This stops the engine functionality. the rice must be replaced and the wet rice also damage the steel wool, which after several time it also must be replaced. After experimenting with several replacement material (pasta, wheat, orange peel, small grains, etc.) I notices that size of these material plays a role. a size of 3-5 mm seems optimum. to have a robust material that does not burn, I decided to replace the rice with glass beads. This produce satisfactory results. The glass beads are not going to stick together and we will not have mold inside the engine. Furthermore, I placed a stainless steel wool in the lower section of engine so that more this more rust resistant layer be the first to have contact with vapor. normal steel wool is placed on top of it. With this the rice era is finished and now i will work to improve other aspects of the engine.
Last week Hassan defended his master thesis. Congratulations Hassan and good luck. With this my last MSc student of 2021-2022 has graduated.

I have modified my rice engine to create sound. Also, I have studied a bit about sound resonators and learned that a pipe that is closed on one side and open on another side is named a quarter-wave resonator and the frequency of resonance is very well known. I made the length of the rice engine variable using small cans that I have collected (I use to keep the cans when I finish eating their content to be able to do experiments such as this). using a mobile phone it was easy to analyze the sound frequency and magnitude. the experiment clearly showed that the formula for calculation of resonance frequency worked very well. very loud sound can be produced this way, I went up only to 105 dB to avoid bothering my neighbors.

Since the input power is much higher, the engine goes into crazy mode and shakes my whole room (exaggerating of course). This Theoacoustic engine has a lot of potentials, and a lot of science t learn from. If I would have seen such a thing when I was a child, I would have become a super famous scientist by now. Here is the link of the previous video, how to make the engine: youtube.com/watch?v=WwvOM8Sfzts
Several of my MSc students defended their thesis last month and only one is left. Jelle did it yesterday, congratulations Jelle. Ravi, Ashutosh, and Uwais defended at the end of August, they all did good work, so congratulations guys. Hassan is the last one which will defend next week on Wednesday. Good luck Hassan.

I saw the original design of this engine from another youtube video several years ago and I could not find the link to put it here. if I find it I ill place it in this part as a reference. This is a thermoacoustics engine that uses steel wool and rice as a regenerator and heat exchanger. Upgrade in the design and details of how it works will come in separate videos. Performance is fantastic and is a good classroom project for kids.

In this video we discuss inductance calculation of a coaxial cable. We will see how to measure inductance of a coaxial cable and we check the validity of the analytical high-frequency coaxial cable inductance formula with FEM simulation and actual measurement.

We had several warm days here in the Netherlands and so I bought three different types of mango and one papaya to dry them. Papaya I bought for the first time, it did not taste much when I tasted the fresh fruit, and when it was dried it tasted bad. Maybe this papaya was not ripe and not sweet. The dried mangos were good. Dried Pakistani mango had too much flavor and was not my favorite. The other types were better. In general, these fruits are expensive here, and drying them here does not make much sense. But the dried mongo tasted better than the dry mango that I can buy in the shops. So far Ayan, Nitish, and Cesar defended their MSC thesis, congratulations guys.

It happens that the analytical formula for inductance calculation uses the inner radius of the outer conductor. The reason is that high frequency current flows near the inner surface of the outer conductor in a coaxial cable. so I decided to explain why this happens. To explain it I needed to use the phenomena of proximity effect, so I also discussed a bit about what proximity effect is and how it impacts current distribution in conductors.

In the second part, I show you how to couple a physical model of a copper rod from magnetic field physics to an electric circuit consisting of a step voltage and a resistor. In the next video, I show you the comparison between the frequency-dependent model of the copper rod and when the model is analyzed at a fixed freuency.

Especially if the wire is thin and many turns are needed like the secondary coil of a Tesla coil. Simple wooden blocks and a drill internal structure is used to make this winding machine. In a futur,e video I may upgrade the machine and show you the outcome. My university laptop burned a few days ago. Magic smoke came out of the fan. A fried inductor inside is visible. I am very keen to repair it since it still works with a battery, but when connected to power, the inductor gets super hot. Maybe it is a project for itself. Loads of master theses on the table, to be reviewed. Hot summer, and lots of work to do. A good dinner in Arnhem and a letter that put a smile on my face.

I plan to make this series the most comprehensive online video collection about capacitance and capacitors. First we go ahead with capacitance calculation and later I will expand the video series to topics of capacitors, their construction and complexities associated. In this first video I explain the basic definition and how to calculate capacitance between two conductors analytically and using FEM simulation in COMSOL Multiphysics. The example that I have used here to explain the basics is the most simple one i.e. a parallel plates capacitor. Calculation of matrix of capacitance for multi conductors scenario will be covered in the next video and thereafter I will talk about self-capacitance of a coil. Meanwhile I may cover capacitance calculation for more complicated simple systems, for example capacitance between two spheres, etc. By the way did you know that you can cite a Youtube video in your thesis or publication ? so in case the material of this video is useful for your work consider citing the video 😎.
A while back I decided to choose some random Youtubers and try to gain more subscribers than them. Today i have passed the third channel. 1- Carving Foam: when first passed him he had 269 subscribers, current subscribers 365 2- Player cc: when first passed him he had 521 subscribers, current subscribers 547 3- Aleksandar Haber: just passed him, current subscribers 1690
Now the next channel will be "NOC16 March - May EC07". Currently he has 3.62K subscribers, so let see if/when I can take him over.

Last week I went to Nord-IS 22 in Norwat, Trondheim, it was really fun and I got several ideas to work on for future publications. Hans and Nathaniel were also there. Always refreshing to see them and talk to them. I promised Hans that if one day I win a Nobel price, I will ask him to accompany me in the award ceremony :) Philip presented our paper and we laughed a lot during an evening dinner. What a blessing to have such people around me.

Among the hobbyist this is known as Joule thief circuitry. I show you how to make it with NPN or with PNP transistors. Impact of transistor type, base resistance and input voltage on the output waveform is shown. In a future video I will make a two transistor circuit and will compare the efficiency of that with a single transistor circuitry. Also a Matlab Simulink model of such circuitry will be built in the future. The fact that the circuit start by itself is interesting and makes this simple circuit very useful for DC/DC low power converters.

In the previous video I showed how to do impedance measurement using impedance measurement block and state space method, but those methods only work when you use blocks from Simulink library. However, in some cases your model has components from Simscape library and so the previous method do not work. In the next video I will show you how to do simulation based frequency response estimation to validate the results obtained by linearized model or to obtain the frequency response when a non-linear component is in you model and when the lineaization approach does not work properly.

Today I decided to make some and open my fast eating them. In Iran we never made these at home since every confectionery sell them and it is easier to buy. Here some Turkish shops sell them but since a few years ago I decided to make it myself. It turns out not the best, but is okay. It is better to have the syrup a bit thicker (not like the one I made), but anyway for a boy this is already good. The HV channel has some randomness, different seemingly unrelated topics are covered, but they are part of my life. Hope people don't get bored.

These burnt marks were there from the previous residents. Every time I wanted to clean it with normal detergent and sponge, I had no success. Today I wanted to make a video showing how to make some sweet snack, but then I looked at my stove and I decided to first clean it. After 30 minutes of unsuccessful attempt, suddenly I thought of using putty knives to scrape these dirt. Immediately after trying it I realized it is going to work. So I decided to put this video together. After searching on YouTube I saw so many videos about how to clean a stove-top, :). But anyway, this is my version.
