This can be frustrating if you buy a seed that isn't shade tolerant and plant it under grass, or purchasing a shade variety and planting it in full sun. When it comes to grass seed not all varieties are a like and not all brands are a like. I narrowed my choice down to two. 1. barenbrug rpr perennial ryegrass and the Ryan Knorr Elite Perrenial Rygrass. Both of these varieties are rated top in there class.Issue number two not knowing how much seed to plant. For a general overseed, where grass could use some thickening up i recommend 2-3lbs of grass seed per 1000 sq ft. For bald or sparse areas I recommend using 7 to 10lbs of grass seed per 1000 sq ft.The third common lawn seeding mistake is over application of the grass seed. seed crowding is a real issue and causes some term and long term issues. seed crowding doesn't allow the seed to root properly due to the over crowding. This causes what almost appears to be fungal issues when in fact its just due to over crowding of grass seed. It is classified as a selective pre emergent. Which means, you can grow grass and not weeds! Mesotrione is the active ingredient. This active ingredient allows you to grow grasses such as kentucky bluegrass, Perrenial ryegrass, Turf type tall fescue, st augustine grass, centipede grass, buffalo grass, and certain types of fine fescue without harming the grass seed you're planting.The benefit of using such an herbicide is the active ingredient mesotrione has both weed killing properties and prevents new weeds from germination. It will kill crabgrass, dandelions, clover and many more types of weeds. When planting grass this allows you to plant grass and stop weeds from sprouting at the same time. We also talk about my new grass selections. One is a new variety from Barenbrug yet to be released. It's a hyprid of Barenbrug's RPR and Jacklin's CSI Perrenial Ryegrass. The two seeds are in trials as we speak and will be released next year. Both RPR and CSI have regenerating / creaping stolons that run subsuface. This means the grass regenates and moves laterally. The other variety I chose is Ryan Knorr's Elite Perrenial Ryegrass blend with Opti-root. This variety is said to have better heat tolerance, great blade regitity for a better mow experience, less prone to fungus like gray leaf spot, and was rated top tier on NTEP for overall quality. This is part 1 of 2023's "this is my lawn, I'm starting over" playlist.Step one is to scalp mow the lawn down to 1.5" or lower. I prefer 1". It makes step two much easier.Step two is to dethatch the lawn and remove all the dead debris. I prefer to use a dethatcher like the sun joe dethatcher and scarifier. I do this to remove all the dead debris off the surface of the soil so the selective pre emergents are able to get there. It also helps to increase seed to soil contact once we get to that step.Step three is to apply a selective pre emergent, tenacity, and non selective herbicide, eraser max, to the live grass. The non selective pre emergent is a weed killing herbicide that kills everything it touches. The active ingredient glyphosate, eraser max, travels fast through the grass and provides full results in two weeks. I have found its best to do a minimum of two applications of the non selective herbicide, eraser max, spaced one week apart from each other. The selective pre emergent, tenacity, has to be spaced out two weeks apart. Here is my spray scheduleDay 1. I combine eraser max and tenacityDay 7. Eraser max onlyDay 14. Each wheel has an independent motor and this robot mower mows steep lawns with ease. The robot lawn mower setup was quick and easy. The things I'm most impressed by the luba are the pattern mowing, which includes a cross cut setting. Cross cut lawn mowing means it does both a verticle and horizontal pass. A setting i've yet to see another robot lawn mower feature.Mow heights go from 1.2" all the way up to 2.8". Tall mowing is also another feature the luba does more than it's competitors. What I was most impressed with was its dual cutting deck. This allows the mower to cut a 15" diameter other than a 7" diameter. Less wheel tracks and better stripes as a result.The lack luster issue is what makes it great. the all wheel drive. The all wheel drive has a tendency to dig into the lawn when its making its boarder pass. If you have areas of your lawn along the boarder that are thin or sparse it will dig into the soil. I'm optimistic this will be remediated with a software update in the future.Other than that you can customize your settings as such: height of cut, segmented grid, double grid, mowing overlap distance, zero turn cutting, etc.Overall the luba awd 5000 feels like a tank and cuts super clean. The signal base station sends out a broader signal than its competitors and it shows. The luba follows boundaries very well after you've set them. Ideally we want 6-8 inches of water saturation in the soil. Without water the grass goes into stress dormancy and goes brown. Lawns are sensitive to this process and if you leave your grass dry for too long it dies. Its important to act fast. Once the grass goes brown we usually have two weeks to wake it up.Step 1 is to push the water back into the lawn. We do not want to water too much too soon. I recommend for the average system to water 1 hour daily for 6 to 10 days to catch the soil back up. For hunter mp rotator systems this means you'll need to water two hours per day or more. I recommend watering each zone 15 minutes at a time 4 times per day. this helps the water saturate into the soil. If you push too much water too fast the water will run off the top.Step 2 is using a recovery product. My preference is essential plus 1-0-1 at 4oz per 1 gallon over 1000 sq ft. Other products such as greene county fert's rgs and Revive granular works great.Optional Step - If the dead spots have sat longer than 2 weeks it may be wise to lightly rake through the dead matter. this will help encourage the new growth to find the sunlight.Thanks for tuning in! Measure your lawn - So you know how much product / soil to purchase.2. Choose the right leveling soil - sand / top soil must be screened. Inform the company your purpose is to level a lawn. Tell them upfront that you can't use soil that has debris like rocks or gravel. If you get a load with rocks, gravel, wood chips purchase a screen at home depot/lowes to manually filter. - for smoothing or leveling only, i recommend using 1 ton of sand per 1000 sq ft of lawn area. Sand to be screened 2mm or finer. Commonly called playground sand or leveling sand. - for amending soil / lawn aerification - clay soils - sand 2mm or finer - Sand soils / sandy loam - 50/50 blend topsoil w/sand at 1 ton per 1000 sq ft. Lawns that are somewhat bumpy and aerating add 1 ton of soil per 1000 sq ft plus 10% Lawns that are very bumpy, and aerating add 1 ton of soil per 1000 sq ft plus 20% - Raising the height of an area- Recommend purchasing a soil that best matches what you have. For clay, use top soil. For sand, use sand or sandy loam. - estimate the height you intend to raise. measure the sq ft of the area. google, top soil calculator. choose the type of soil and input your measurements.3. Mow the lawn down to 1" - the purpose of this is to allow the sand to pass through. 4. Remove surface debris - Use a power rake, sun joe dethather or a manual dethatching rake. I recommend purchasing a sun joe dethatcher. Makes the job much easier. - optional service - lawn aeration - minimum two passes, one verticle pass and one horizontal pass. I recommend removing the plugs off the grass afterward.5. Fertilize the lawn - Apply 1lbs of Nitrogen per 1000 sq ft. I recommend a fertilizer with the first number on the bag between 17 and 34. The application rates on the fertilizer bag will determine the rate. I prefer using the Propeat 17-0-4 at 5lbs per 1000 sq ft. - Optional service- soil conditioner. soil conditioners are a combination of calcium and humates. The calcium helps keep the clay / soil open and the humates help slough sediments off the roots which is why they call is a soil conditioner / enhancer.6. spread the sand / soil to the lawn - distribute the sand on the lawn. Fill and load a wheel barrow up with sand and take the sand to the furthest point in the yard. Either dump the sand in piles and use your bow rake to distribute the sand or you can throw the sand by using a flat pan shovel (ginja perferred method). Apply between .25" to .5" of sand broadcast on the surface of the lawn. Best to test a small section first to ensure you do not over apply the sand / soil. If the sand is not dry, which it most likely won't be, wait 24 hours before massaging the sand into the ground. Use a levelawn (ginja preferred) or a landscape rake to massage the sand into the ground. I find it best to use the levelawn or landscape rake 4 different directions, in each area, when using the levelawn. This helps make sure the sand / soil is distributed properly. - optional service - grass overseed. - I recommend overseeding at 2-3lbs of grass seed per 1000 sq ft. Top dressing with peat moss highly recommended after seed application. Keep seed damp for 2 to 3 weeks minimum during the germination process.

Zoysia grass is the primary grass of the region. What I wanted to find out is what they do to maintain new and or existing grass in the region. It came down to these 7 things;1. Use of dolamitic lime. The regional soil has plenty of nutrients but sits on the acidic side. Lime helps bump up the PH.2. Starter Fertilizer - recommended a 10.10.103. No mowing for 30 days after the sod goes down4. Regular Maintenance fertilizer treatments. This is where things got interesting. For maintenanence fertilizer it was recommended to do a 10.10.10. But if the grass is yellowing it is recommended to push some urea / 46.0.0 for some quick growth5. Turf insect control. Brazilians are not ones who do preventive care. When they have bugs its recommended to use an insecticide made of deltamethrin to help quickly resolve the issue.6. Fungus control. Once again the brazilians of this region were not big on preventive care. Once the lawn has a fungus they recommended a fungicide similar to those we find in the united states of america.7. Weed Control. Use of selective herbicides are best. Herbicides were very similar to those found in the united states of america. It sticks to the hopper and makes it difficult to complete the job.The power shovel is light weight by comparison, can get into the smaller areas due to it's 12" diameter deck. Are battery powered mowers the right fit for you? Few things you should ask yourself. Will the mower suit your needs and will it have enough power. The newer models are now pushing 56 volts or as toro would say 60 volts. Is your lawn small enough to use a battery powered option? Yes, i said small enough. I find that these type of mowers will mow about 10,000 sq ft max in one mow if you're not pushing it very hard. The toro 60v max with flex power we reviewed today did very well. However, it has a few draw backs. It cuts 1/2" off the top very clean. anything above that it will drop grass clippings back into the cut. Which can be a huge inconvenience and will require you to mow again. One of the major benefits to battery powered mowers is how quiet they are. They also do not require fluid, ie oil, gas. this allows for easy storage and transportation.Thanks for tuning in! If you haven't checked out there channels I highly suggest you do. This was my first time every riding on a zero turn mower. No surprise to find out there was a bit of a learning curve. Turning it on was something like figuring out the code to contra, up up, down down, left right, left right, B, A, select start.Driving was a bit of a challenge to figure out at first but by the end I handled it well. I only ran over one landscape light and I consider that a win. Overall the Toro Titan max is a solidly built machine. Felt like a tank and drove like a Ferrari.Thanks for tuning in!
