Strolling in the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing, it's as if you're traveling through the country back in time. Established in 1970, on a small hill southwest of Vienna, the museum covers 150 acres of land, all for displaying 97 historical buildings such as wooden homesteads, granaries and kilns, showing different styles of construction in various parts of the country over the last six centuries. It is among the biggest 10 open-air museums in Europe and has gained reputation as a national treasure of Austria.
Presenting stories behind the ancient woodcrafts and houses in the museum, our tour was guided by Sebastian Nemestothy, a researcher from the Institute of Wood Science and Technology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna. Nemestothy is currently working on research projects that look into the buildings in the museum to investigate traditional wood usage in Austria.
