The golden brown baboon spider Augacephalus junodi in nature - South Africa World of Spiders 2019-10-28 | Augacephalus junodi is a harpacterine theraphosid spider from the northeastern parts of South Africa . As this fossorial species often lives in colonies its burrows are more easy to find than the retreats of other Harpactiriniae in South Africa. Anyways this species is extremely shy and very fast so it is difficult to tickle it out of its burrow to take a decent picture.I did not cut most of the scenes so that you can see that it takes patience to finally have a proper view on the spider. In fact I spent three nights at the same location.

Phlogiellus moniqueverdezae is found along the southwestern coast of Thailand where this species lives in a opportunistic way. Besides vertical burrows they also build retreats on trees and especially on Palm Trees, also in Palm Oil Plantations ( the Pest of Mankind ) where normally no Tarantulas occur. Rainspider special - Palystes sp. in the wild World of Spiders 2019-01-28 | One of my favourite genus of african spiders is called Palystes. They belong to the family of Heteropodidae and are known under the name " Rain Spider ". They have a unique way of reproduction and out of the 15 species belonging to Palystes more than 10 can be found in the Western and Eastern Cape, the Transkei and Lesotho.The most abundant species in the Western und Eastern Cape are Palystes castaneus und Palystes superciliosus. Palystes spp. are nocturnal hunters which hide behind tree bark, stones etc. at daytime. They never build nets for catching prey.Both Palystes castaneus and Palystes superciliosus females use dry leaves to form a large ball like eggsac which they hang within bushes or other suitable places.. The eggsacs hang freely attached by a few strings of silk. Until the offspring hatch the female spider stays near or on the eggsac to repair and protect it. P. superciliosus eggsacs need around 17 days for the spiderlings to hatch and another 4 days to leave the sac. The small spiders stay a few more days on the eggsac and are protected by the female. It was documented that P. superciliosus can lay around 800 eggs in multipe eggsacs during its lifespan of 18-24 months.

It even occurs within the Capital Panama City. The most amazing Thing to discover is that these spiders share their burrows often with the microhylid frog Engystomops pustulosus. This behaviour to share burrwos with frogs also occurs with Brachypelma spp. and even Poecilotheria. Finding the Malaysian Trapdoor Spider Liphistius malayanus in Nature - HD with slow motion World of Spiders 2017-12-16 | Liphistius malayanus belongs to the family of Liphistidae and is the largest member in this family in Malaysia .Liphistiidae construct trap-doors and are are tube-dwelling spiders that spend most of their time within their tubes and are rarely seen above ground. Trapdoor nests are generally built in areas with moss or sparse vegetation and silk trip-lines radiating away from the burrow entrance sometimes make them visible if one has a carefull look.The Malaysian trapdoor spiders are endemic to certain areas. Liphistius malayanus inhabits a small area approx. 1500m above sea leavel with moderate temperatures. They are protected by local law anyways there has been a huge decline of these spiders due to poaching for the pet trade. Because of the special climate within their habitat they don`t survive for long in captitivity and all Liphistius malayanus in the pet trade were caught illegally. So every species in captivity is a step forward to extinction in nature.

It features a rear shaped foveal horn on the peltidium. The function of the horn is unclear. It is said it might provide an increased surface for the attachment of the dorsal dilator muscle, which aids in drawing in liquefied food into the sucking stomach at a faster rate.Ceratogyrus darlingi inhabits burrows but can also be found in retreats under stones. In this video you will see the habitat, juveniles and mature females and male. Interestingly the male seen in the video is much larger than mature males raised in captivity !Within the Limpopo Province of South Africa C. darlingi shares the same habitat with Augacephalus junodi and both species can be found next to each other.

Phlogiellus pelidnus from Sabah / Borneo in Nature World of Spiders 2016-12-27 | Recently described Phlogiellus pelidnus from Sabah, Borneo inhabits the tropical montane forest above 1200m sea level. Interestingly this large Phlogiellus species uses burrows in sloped embankments and also retreats in trees. In this video the biotope within the Crocker Range National Park and the Mount Kinabalu National Park is shown,A few years ago Phlogiellus pelidnus was abundant in the Mt. Kinabalu National Park. Especially within the range of the botanical garden there were plenty of specimen living in the trees. For whatever reason in 2016 I was only able to find 4 spiders within the whole park.

Ornithoctonus sp. Ko Phayam / Thailand in nature World of Spiders 2016-11-29 | In 2015 I visited Ko Phayam , a small island belonging to the Ranong province in Thailand near Myanmar to find a large Ornithoctunus sp. It seems that this species is extremely rare and I was not succesful in finding any specimen. This year I visited Ko Phayam again and I was extremely lucky to find a burrow on a rubber tree plantation. This Ornithoctonus sp. is quite large. It is similar to the species from neighbouring Ko Chang which has been smuggled into the pet trade a couple of years ago by a german tarantula dealer and wildlife trafficker. In the video you can see how I tickle the spider out of its burrow with a piece of gras at night to shoot some photos before putting it back into its burrow again.
