AT-TE walkers are multi-role combat vehicles which can transport up to twenty soldiers or, depending on internal configuration, twelve soldiers & a pair of AT-RT (All-Terrain-Reconnaissance-Transport) walkers into battle. AT-TE walkers are equipped with heavy blast-proof super-dispersing armour and six anti-personnel laser cannons for defence, while a single fully-traversing (rotating) dorsally mounted blaster howitzer fulfils the role of artillery, providing both indirect fire-support at long-range & direct anti-tank firepower.
Note the AT-TE's blast-proof armour absorbs at least five anti-tank blasts from the Baktoid laser cannons before a sixth finally destroys one of the walker's legs, crippling its mobility. The legs are protected by much less armour than the main body and the transparisteel viewport is the least protected part of the entire vehicle. On the other hand, the AT-TE's own primary weapon could destroy a Baktoid OG-9 war-droid or an armoured-assault-tank with a single shot.
AT-TE combat-walkers are self-propelled-artillery & armoured-troop-transports (SPA-AT).
AT-TE combat-walkers are not technically battle tanks so referring to them as tanks is actually a misnomer and using them as tanks is a mistake. A tank is always most armoured at the front to allow the vehicle to perform frontal assaults and to break through enemy lines of defence. Sabre-class fighter tanks, AT-AP & AT-DP combat walkers, AT-AT's and Juggernauts are all better suited to the role of the battle tank by comparison. More specifically, Saber-class fighter tanks are fast Main-Battle-Tanks (MBT), AT-AP & AT-DP walkers are slow Infantry Tanks and AT-ATs are superheavy Mechanised-Infantry-Tanks (MIT).
