I have recently been framing some of my AI workshops around a concept that starts in the dusty pages of the 1800s and zooms all the way to our current hyper-connected, digital classrooms of today. As we have seen time and time again in history we have another curious case of history repeating itself, but this time with a techy twist. Welcome to my nerdy dive into the Jevons Paradox, but with a flavor of AI in education.

So piicture this: the more efficient our gadgets get, the more we end up using them. Makes sense, right? But here’s where it gets twisted – this efficiency isn’t always leading us to the promised land of educational utopia(shocking I know). Instead, we might be sprinting down a path where our beloved AI tools start doing more of the heavy lifting than we anticipated.

Imagine a world where our role as educators starts to morph. Are we just becoming the guardians of these AI wonders? Don’t get me wrong, AI has the power to transform the game – personalizing learning at scale, zapping through admin tasks, and other benefits that I have shared time and time again. Yet, in this efficiency extravaganza, are we risking the essence of what makes learning truly impactful? More importantly, what is means to be human.

The Classroom Conundrum

Let’s not beat around the bush. The introduction of AI in our learning spaces is not just a mere addition; it’s a seismic shift(that I don't think has even started yet) in how we define education. I created this video “From Coal to Code: Unraveling the Jevons Paradox in the Classroom,” to work through some of my recent shifts in thinking and hoping it is not just another average tech talk. It’s a heartfelt call to ponder, to question, and yes, to get a bit uncomfortable about how we balance the scales of tech and teaching.

This is where you and I, and every educator out there, come into play. It’s our mission to ensure that this tech wave enhances the learning journey without washing away the critical thinking, the creativity, and the human touch that are the cornerstones of education.

Madison Elementary School LEGO Zoo Challenge Day

Aaron Maurer 2024-01-23 | Recently, I had the pleasure of being asked and participating in a celebration event at an elementary school. The event honored students who achieved over 95% attendance in the second quarter. We prepared a space filled with a vast array of LEGO bricks, where rewarded students engaged in a creative challenge.
Quick Powerful Bursts of Creativity
In a matter of 20-30 minutes as the schedule allowed, students formed teams and accepted the mission to design a new animal species, combining elements of two different animals. The energy in the room was a constant ebb and flow among grade levels, students coming and going, as these young minds collaborated, designed, and built their creations, which we displayed as a "school zoo" by the day's end.
Being Ready To Pivot And Not Always Be Scripted(Extending the Experience)
It was incredible what they created in such a short amount of time. Students organized themselves into teams, brainstormed what their animal would be along with the habitat design, then set to work to bring their ideas to life. We kept every base plate aka zoo habitat so that at the end of the day we had a school zoo of all the builds.
The twist of the zoo was this..... students had to create a new animal that was at least a combination of two animals. They had to collaborate and listen to hear ideas from their friends and build a new animal.
The excitement was high and also contagious by students and staff. The enthusiasm was so infectious that we decided to extend the LEGO zoo for an additional week. This allowed students to earn more building time, create explanatory videos, and motivate their peers to strive for attendance rewards in the future..
Structured for Success and Process
The staff scheduled the day, transforming a classroom into a LEGO playground with accessible bricks and ample building space. Although we had educational resources like zoo videos from our local zoo, the students' eagerness to build took center stage.
1. Staff created a schedule for the day so all grade levels would have 20-30 minutes to bring the students down.
2. We transformed a classroom into a LEGO build space with tables on outside for them to build on or they could build on the floor. LEGO was placed down the center for easy access and pickup.
3. Slides were created to give them some ideas to consider. Most have never been to a zoo so we had to provide context. A video from our local zoo was available to talk about what they do for animal health and happiness. We did not always get a chance to use it due to time constraints and volume was hard. Plus the kids were ready to build!
4. After rules and explanations of the zoo were presented, students were placed in teams, given a baseplate and were set free to build until time to clean up arrived.
5. Adding to the excitement, a local college basketball team joined us(St. Ambrose), offering assistance and camaraderie. Their presence was a highlight for the students, who enjoyed building alongside athletes from diverse backgrounds.
6. As we neared the end of each session we took a post it note and wrote down what the animal combo was so we could help explain to others.

I think one of the productive things that can come out of this level of disruption is a culture of experimentation.

We ask our students to experiment all the time. Like that's that, especially in the K to 12 certainly. And higher ed too that we want our students, you know, we give them something new. We do this all the time. I don't even think about it. We say here's something new to read, something new to watch, something new to process and engage with it. Just experiment, test it out whether it's in, you know, traditional assessment or nontraditional assessment. And so in many ways, we need to just practice that. We need to do that, right? We have this new stuff. So experiment play with it, iterate, see what works And then you kind of go from there. And I think that we all have this desire um from the instructor side for perfection. We want, we think that and I think this is an error. We think that the best way to serve our students is to give them a fully realized polished product, right? Which is the course. But I think the exact opposite is true. I think something changes when you tell students that I'm trying something new, I'm gonna try a different form of assessment and I want your feedback about how it worked. I think that fundamentally changes the feel of the virtual room or actual physical room. So I think that the culture of experimentation is something we need to really, really conserve and prize because that's, that's what we want our students to do. You want them to experiment and play?

....sometimes the key to making an assignment A I proof is to create a better assignment.
So normally with the essay form, I would spend the first hour looking, not even reading anything, not even like doing like what we all do and what, what we like, you know, giving feedback and engaging with ideas. But going through the Turnitin reports, scanning them, finding information. I would lose an hour to two hours. And then sending emails to students that it came up a 70% on Turnitin. So I'm not doing that anymore. I no longer have that task. So the, the amount of time that I put to create the assignment I save later on at least a little bit.
It's not that you're you're saving time but repurposing time and how much better time spent for you and for the students to be engaged in reading their thinking and having conversations about their thinking. That's such a more enriching learning opportunity for everybody involved, the educator and the students versus what we're doing now.
What assessment can I create today that I continue to teach? One year, five years, 10 years down the road? I think that we have to be willing as a part of our job to change how we're assessing things if something does need to change about them.

Perception is everything.
Given our last 10 years with ipads and chromebooks, if people had used ipads, the way they should have been used AI would be non issue in terms of plagiarism, student work and all these other kinds of things. And so it's an issue for us today because we have always latched on to these short term solutions that bring us even more long term problems.
It's really also important to question these large organizations. These really large big organizations that we look to.... Where have you been in the last 20 years? Where is that check in? Why have things not evolved and why are people so flustered? Where is the advocacy?Who's gonna take the step back and ask what is the missing piece here? Because if you just blindly follow these organizations, you will get what you've got in the last 10 years.
