In traditional Hellenistic astrology, the relationship between all of the signs and planets is based on their line of sight-- that is, how well (and how favorably) they can see each other. Aspect theory is very visual, at its core.
In order to understand more deeply, it's also helpful to understand the polarities (yin/yang), the elements (fire/earth/air/water) and the modes (cardinal/fixed/mutable) that comprise each sign. I don't go into that deeply here, but I DO reference these things.
