In this video from Berklee Online’s Artist Management course, authored by Ardie Farhadieh, music attorney Marjorie Garcia provides advice on how to find a lawyer that aligns with your music, goals, and personality. The first question to ask: Does this lawyer have the capacity to take you on as a client? If not, the relationship likely won’t work, especially if you’re just starting out in the music industry. It is also important for the lawyer to be familiar with the type of music you make, says Garcia. That way, they will have an appropriate frame of reference and be able to help you with the type of legal issues you might experience.
