Humans begin life as one single cell. In order for us to grow into the complex, functioning beings that we are, our cells must divide into trillions of cells in a highly controlled way.
This movie shows the process a cell undergoes as it divides. Iromi and Niall captured the moment as it unfolded using a sophisticated microscope called the lattice light sheet.
The lattice light sheet allows researchers to watch live cells in real time and capture moving images in 3D. The ability to observe cells in this way is an exciting phenomenon in medical research.
Errors in how our cells divide can lead to all kinds of disorders and diseases. Researchers are interested in understanding the fundamentals of cell division to help inform what is happening when healthy development goes awry. For instance, this data is going towards important research to help prevent and treat muscular dystrophy.
