Are you worshiping the true God… or a god you have created?

In Acts 14:8–18, Paul and Barnabas encounter a crowd that witnesses undeniable divine power yet responds with idolatry instead of repentance. A miraculous healing exposes something deeper than physical need. It reveals the human tendency to reshape God into something more comfortable, controllable, and culturally familiar.

This sermon examines how mankind possesses an inescapable awareness of God through creation and conscience, yet suppresses that truth without the light of the gospel. From ancient pagan mythology to modern ideological worldviews, humanity continually exchanges the Creator for idols formed in its own image.

Walking through this passage, we consider five movements in the text:

• The miracle that revealed faith
• The miracle that revealed idolatry
• The gospel that rejects human glory
• The call to turn from idols to the living God
• The tragedy of persistent idolatry

Paul’s message to Lystra confronts a timeless problem: even when God reveals Himself, people often reinterpret Him through their own assumptions rather than submitting to His truth. The same question presses on us today:

Am I worshiping a God I created?
