I’ve been somewhat reluctant because our tradition designates this time directly after someone’s death as a time belonging to those who cherished him the most. I will therefore be brief.
I’m certainly saddened by the passing of Tim Keller. I only interacted with him on social media once and I remember him being much more gracious than others on the evangelical left.
As many know I was very critical of much of his theology. But, the Lord did use him in the lives of many I know, some coming to the Lord under his teaching.
While many are lionizing him I think it’s appropriate to remind believers that his public legacy is characterized by encouraging the church to accommodate the world through a weak missiology. I believe the true gospel was certainly part of his ministry but he also preached a false social gospel alongside it at times.
The truth is, American Christians will be contenting with Keller’s negative legacy for years, but Keller won’t be here for it. I believe that God can save people with bad theology so long as their trust is in the true person and work of Jesus Christ. This is my hope for Tim Keller and all who proclaim the name of Christ.

Jeffrey Rickman, a former United Methodist Church pastor, explains how this is happening. Pastor Rickman is part of the Global Methodist Church now, but a month ago he was still ministering in the UMC. Since 2019, when conservatives won a key victory, the denomination has been drifting toward the Left in North America. The traditionalist stance on sexual ethic has been ignored by key figures with power in the denomination. Some churches who want to leave are hassled regarding the specifics. Assets and Real Estate play a large part in the incentives to stay in or leave. Rickman explains two potential scenarios for the next few years.
