How I LOST TWO Drones in Mexico 🇲🇽 (And Got Them Back) Jason Lanier 2023-02-03 | What do you do when you lose your drone due to battery failure, and you have no GPS or tracking device to find it? Find out what I did to find my lost drone in the beautiful country of Mexico. I used a second drone to recreate my flight path and when it went down due to strong winds, I was able to use the "Find My Drone" app to at least get me closer. Electronic Diffusion- Is It Better Than Traditional Modifiers? Is It Any Good for Photography? Jason Lanier 2022-11-12 | Learning about light modifiers, and finding the right one for you and your works are essential to getting your work done in a way that is both efficient and worthwhile.Do we use big modifiers? They spread light really well and create some beautiful soft imagery. But they can be difficult to use at times.Small modifiers are easy to use virtually anywhere. The issue with them is they spread light in a harder manner that delivers bigger shadows that can be harder to correct in post production.A number of years ago Rotolight introduced the worlds first electronic diffusion called Smart Soft, in their Titan lineup of lights. The issue with this is that the the Titan lights are primarily indoor use and can be hard to use outdoors, especially if you're shooting solo or as a one person team.Rotolight has now introduced the Smart Soft Box for its Aeos 2 line of lights. Saving a Sloth- Protecting a Sloth from Death on the Highway in Ecuador Jason Lanier 2022-04-25 | On a recent photography expedition trip to Ecuador we came across a sloth in the middle of the road. We passed by thinking it was an injured dog or other animal that had been hit. We saw it moving very slowly and assumed it was injured, so we turned around to see if we could help.Upon getting out of the vehicle to my amazement it was a sloth. Or in Spanish, an Oso Perezoso.We blocked off our lane of traffic with our car and then stood nearby the sloth waiting for him to cross. Standing nearby so it wouldn't get hit by the many cars that kept passing by,The sloth went back and forth for 45 minutes, on asphalt that was very hot. When it turned back around to go into the lane that we weren't blocking we had to intervene. As someone who's done a lot of wildlife photography I've been taught to let nature be, and to not interfere. I've also been taught on my many trips to Africa and other places that interacting and especially touching wild animals can have adverse consequences, so we waited for a long time hoping he would cross safely.When it became apparent that he would most certainly get hit if we didn't intervene. I gently picked him up and carried him to safety. He then quickly climbed up a tree to the highest point. It's the ultimate challenge to go into a random location and just make a shoot happen.And that's exactly what I do. I go into a place with a model or two and we just create shoots based on what we find as a backdrop and try to pair it with some clothes that they brought along for the expedition.One way to really tie all of that together is by using textures and props from the location itself, to help your subject BELONG to that space. It isn't always the easiest thing to do, but by adding these textures such as sand, dirt, peeled paint, etc to our subjects we create the illusion that they came from there. And that is critical to a composition.I hope it helps my friends. Deciding to shoot in adventurous situations, places and locations definitely makes what I do more complicated, expensive, time consuming than what I'd be doing if I did a conventional photography route.But I love it that way. And I wouldn't change it for anything in the world.There are lots of times when I'm physically miserable. Lots of gear breaking. Lots of frustration. And yes, lots of failure. But I also experience more once in a lifetime moments in a year...than many people do in a lifetime. And that's the trade off. You take all that hard stuff because the payoff is so incredible.This video showcases one of my recent photo adventures with a really talented model named Elley who's also a geologist. She took me to an abandoned mine in her side by side and we did a shoot where nobody has ever shot before.It was REALLY cold, sometimes unbearable, and the road to get there was crazy. But the images and most importantly the memories were something I'll never forget.I hope you like it.
