With its shimmering magenta head and throat, the male Anna’s Hummingbird (Calypte anna) flashes vibrant color in the sunlight. But this bird isn’t just clocking in for looks — One of their many to-do’s is securing the perimeter! Males will fearlessly defend their feeding areas, chasing off any rivals (and even large insects!).
And don't get us started on their courtship displays… Okay, fine!
🚀 Males rocket skyward, then dive at speeds up to 60 mph, stopping in front of an interested female at the last second and producing an abrupt and surprisingly loud chirp as air is forced through their tail feathers, which are adapted specifically to produce this sound.
He'll do this as long as the female shows interest… talk about dinner and a show!
Unlike most North American birds, Anna’s Hummingbirds also flip the script on the breeding seasons — many begin nesting as early as December. These birds are also vital pollinators, helping native plants thrive while fueling their high-energy lifestyles. Win-win!
