John's guitar is mostly picked up through his vocal mic When John sings, his voice hits the compressor causing the input level to go down, resulting in his guitar coming in and out of the mix. I recorded the J160 through a Vox Ac30 while singing into a Wa47. I removed the vocal mic anytime I was singing to recreate this effect.
The key to getting the sound right is to focus on the top two strings, it starts to sound too full or muddy if you play all the strings all the time
