browsing through the photos i took in the angkor wat area of kambodia 2 months ago i stumbled over this strange non window window with non pillar pillars which one actually finds everywhere there. i know some people will hate me for that but i could not resist to turn it into a base for a generative patch. i turned the pillars into a scale by defining the slim rings as highs (1) and the thicker rings into lows (0). following more or less the methods of Ian Ring (@ian.ring IanRing.com) i applied each note of a 12 tone scale to every ring but extracted only the notes corresponding to slim rings. i was expecting something very abstract, non octave repeating. but to my surprise out came a well used scale accurately repeated over 2 and a half octaves. starting from the bottom with C the scale goes: C,D,Eb,F,G,Ab,A,B, in intervals: 2,1,2,2,1,1,2 in semitones: 0,2,3,5,7,8,9,11 . in @ian.ring s incredible scale finder machine this 8 note scale is known as "Bebop Minor" in western music and as "Zirafkend" in arabic music. i am sure there is a corresponding raga in indian music even if it is not a usual one. any one knows? since those temples where build by ancient hindus that would open up those windows for some range of speculation :-)
