Green Eggs and Ham yesmissjane 2018-09-27 | Hey guys, it's Jane. Today is my 4 year booktubeaversary, and I'm celebrating! Four years ago I hadn't yet met my little #booktube baby, whose favourite book I am featuring today. If things continue as they seem to this will soon be my most read book by a sizeable margin. Green Eggs and Ham was also one of my favourites when I was a kid, and although I now have a number of more contemporary favourites, (even in the picture book category) I do think that there is something special about the rhythmic precision and emotional intensity of this classic. I am also moved to (over)think about the theme of the story. On one level, the story is about adventurousness, and encouraging people to not rule out new experiences before trying them. Almost any parent will identify easily with Sam in his efforts to convince a grumpy interlocutor to give his offered food a try. But looked at from another angle, this is a story of being worn down by persistent nagging. Viewed this way, it is hard to feel quite as excited for Sam's eventual victory (oops, should I have listed this as a spoiler?). A final insight which occurred to me recently is that the refusal in the story is less about the food itself and more about the person offering the food (before we hear 'I do not like green eggs and ham' we hear 'I do not like that Sam I am.') This makes the denouement maybe even more poignant.Anyhow, I hope you don't mind me indulging myself. I hope you are all well, and I'll talk to you later.

Scales of Empire is a hot mess of a book which did my head in. Space Dragons: they came for our women, but stayed for our potato chips. The biggest mystery of all, why did I read it to the end?
