On September 20, 2024, an Allen’s Hummingbird was found struggling in the oil sheen at Marina del Rey following a yacht fire and oil spill. Weighing just 3 grams, the tiny bird was carefully rescued and taken to the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center, where staff began delicate stabilization and decontamination procedures. After initial stabilization, the hummingbird was transferred to Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center for further care. After ten days in care, the hummingbird was fully rehabilitated and successfully released back into the wild, highlighting the resilience of wildlife and the expertise of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network’s skilled responders.
