John Hill (a.k.a. johnhill_3009 or jchwayz ) 2022-08-10 | Late at night after coming out of seeing a movie in Red Wing, I encountered a mesmerizing array of lights and flying sparks moving along the CP River Sub. mainline near the theatre. A closer look revealed it to be a Loram rail grinder train moving slowly eastward. I quickly drove ahead and parked near the Jackson Street grade crossing, running up onto the nearby pedestrian overpass for a video shot. The rear of the train had hoses set up spraying water for fire control. Then I leapfrogged ahead to the downtown depot for another runby. As the train receded in the distance toward Colvill West, it was followed by 3 Hy-rail vehicles.

Note that on my ride, only one of the 2 paddlewheels was operating. The Captain explained it was temporarily down because its hydraulic drive motor was in need of repair.

The 45-Tonner had spent many years switching grain cars at ADM's Red Wing elevator facility. but was retired several years ago and stored on a remote piece of track behind Barn Bluff. During succeeding years the loco was badly vandalized and its future is now uncertain. The loco was recently moved to a more public storage location where vandalism is presumably less risky. Still, this loco seems to be on borrowed time as it seems ADM is uninterested in returning it to service. This location belongs on someone's short line or museum.

Our portable layout is set up and various views of trains on our layout are seen, plus coverage of some of the other group's displays. Our informal HO model railroad "club" journeys down from the Twin Cities to La Crosse for the annual train show. We follow the SOO-MILW River Division with our portable HO layout housed in a truck, stopping off at Red Wing for some railfan runbys and pacing along Hwy 61. Another stop is made at Maple Springs, another scenic spot. Arriving at La Crosse we stop at the SOO-MILW roundhouse and engine terminal as a light snow starts falling. The former MILW facility is of course mostly gone today. our next stop is Grand Crossing tower and diamonds between the SOO-MILW and BN. A DM&IR (aka, DMIR and Missabe) SD9 is seen in a BN lashup with a train of high-wide cars up front, including a couple Boeing fuselage cars and a wing segment. A C&NW (aka CNW) switching movement is seen approaching the diamond on the SOO-MILW side to wait for the BN to clear the diamonds. The tower was still fully operational at the time, and the interlocking's various rods and semaphore signal blades were fascinating. The clip ends with a brief look at BN's North La Crosse yard near Sullivan as the snow continues to fall.

GN SD45 #400 "Hustle Muscle" pulls a GNRHS fan trip on the North Shore Scenic Railroad (NSSR) from Duluth's Lake Superior Railroad Museum to Palmers siding on the LSRM's ex-DM&IR lakefront line. A photo runby stop is made at Palmers and GN 400 runs around the train for the return trip to Duluth. But first there is a meet with the museum's regular excursion train pulled by SOO Line FP7 #2500A. CB&Q diner

Francis Lee Jaques Layout

Francis Lee Jaques was an American wildlife artist, doing paintings, pencil drawings, linoleum scratch art, and other works. He briefly worked for both the Duluth & Iron Range (D&IR) and Duluth Missabe & Northern (DM&IR), and wrote articles about his days on the railroad in Trains Magazine. His interest in art combined with a passion for model railroading resulted in his building an unusual model railroad called "Great North Road" which used
hand carved steam locomotives and rolling stock. The locos and cars are roughly O-scale but run on S-gauge track. The preserved layout and some art works are displayed in the Minnesota Museum of Mining in Chisholm MN.

On July 21, 1997, DMIR iron ore loads (taconite pellets) head down Proctor Hill as seen from the I-35 rest area near Spirit Mountain. Duluth and Lake Superior is seen in the distance. The "Grassy Point Draw" bridge is also seen. Then the taconite train is seen rolling over the approach trestle to Dock 6.

Southbound Twin Cities and Western (TCWR) train on the MN&S (MNS),
apparently returning from the Minneapolis Port Terminal, stopped at Milwaukee Jct. in St. Louis Park to interchange its train to the westbound CP-SOO's Ex-MILW transcon route toward Hopkins where TCWR's own line begins. Accomplishing that move from Milwaukee Jct. required a series of triple switchback moves through the "Skunk Hollow" industrial area.

Add to this, the train length exceeded the capacity of the short tail track within the Skunk Hollow interchange. So the train had to break into multiple cuts to be taken through the interchange.

Visiting the USA for evaluation and carrying temporary reporting marks AMTK 7003, the train stopped at Amtrak's St. Paul MN Midway Depot for display before departing for its next display location.

The train is actually 2 articulated 3-unit trainsets, equipped with Dellner
transit couplers. An adapter piece allows a Dellner coupler to be attached to, and be pulled by, American train equipment.
