It's finally here! Episode Red is a homebrew 16-bit Sega Genesis remake of Mega Man 4 as part of Mega Man: The Sequel Wars, a fan-made sequel to Mega Man: The Wily Wars. It updates the game with fresh 16-bit graphics and rich sound, and it's playable on the real thing!

Its goal is to give Mega Man 4-6 a 16-bit update running on actual Sega Genesis hardware, while building and improving upon the foundations of the original Wily Wars. Aside from a 1:1 remake mode, there will also be an "EX Mode" which rebuilds the games from the ground up using the increased power of the 16-bit hardware. It will be released episodically, with the first release being Episode Red containing the Mega Man 4 portion. Release date not yet available.

As always, work in progress, etc. Audio encoding continues to be a pain in the ass, hopefully it sounds a bit better than the previous footage.Co-op Mode Gameplay - Mega Man: The Sequel Wars PreviewSequel Wars2021-03-04 | This update marks the beginning of a new direction in the project's development. After lots of consideration and trying to improve the old codebase, I decided to throw away the entirety of the old code and re-create the game from scratch. It took a while, but I think the benefits are obvious: sections that made the demo lag now run at full speed with 2 players and a ton more visual details. All core systems have been improved, and collision in particular should now be near flawless.
Code aside, graphics have been completely overhauled - new sprites were already shown, but the tilesets and background graphics are greatly expanded, as well as more faithful to the original graphics. The new engine's faster speed allows for more graphical tricks and I've also greatly improved my production workflow, meaning creating the game in general will be much easier so you can also expect steadier updates.
Finally, sound - the general consensus was that non-genesis SFX didn't fit the spirit of the console, so I did a general overhaul and put in most of Wily Wars' SFX (sprinkled with a bit of Sonic here and there, but I think it fits). A custom genesis charge sound has also been made, but isn't featured in the video as you can't charge in Co-op (palette limitations, sorry).
Speaking of Co-op, let's talk about the gameplay - Co-op is not a seperate feature or a modifier. Instead, the second player can drop in and out during stage select by pressing the start button on their controller. This feature will work for any level in any mode. The camera is always centered on the player that is further ahead in the level. If a screen transition starts or the other player gets out of the camera's bounds, they are teleported to the leading player. Enemies will either target the closest player or alternate between them, depending on the enemy type. (For example, bosses will mostly alternate between players so both will always have to actively avoid danger).
