In this video, we’ll take an in-depth look at the Tang Retro Console. I’ll take you through its novel, modular approach to hardware, examine it in action, and bring you up to speed on where this device fits in the FPGA ecosystem.
Is this just another MiSTer alternative, or does does the Tang Retro Console bring something new to the table? Stick around and let’s find out together.

Everyone who digs that old 80s or 90s handheld out from the closet has the same reaction ... "I don't remember the screen being this hard to see!" 😵💫
To battle this problem, many of us are turning to modern screen mod kits, such as those offered by McWill or FunnyPlaying. These kits seem magical - but you'll be surprised to know that it's actually not that difficult to make one yourself.
Today, we're going to unpack the science and technology behind these screen mods. I'll help you understand how they work, and show you how you, with a $4 microcontroller and a standard LCD screen, you can make your own.

Like many other folks, I've been following the Commander x16 project for the past couple of years. But, the lack of a DIY version has prevented me from wanting to jump in. So when I came across the OtterX, it immediately caught my attention.
In this video, we're going to build an OtterX and take it for a test drive. I'll take some time to explain some of the things that differentiate it from the Commander x16, and I'll give you my take on some areas that it falls short in.

🔥 Huge shoutout to Travis (@TravsterOR), the mastermind behind TeensyROM! 🎉 Don't have the time, talent, or tools to build one yourself? Do yourself a favor and grab a fully assembled unit from Travis. Support the creator and check it out here: tindie.com/products/travissmith/teensyrom-cartridge-for-c64128
Using a ROM cartridge on your Commodore 64 is super convenient — but scrolling through an endless list of games can lead to decision paralysis. But not anymore! In this video, we’re going to explore the TeensyROM - a modern cartridge for your C64 with a few tricks up its sleeves. I’ll show you how to build one, walk through its features, and you’ll find out why this is now the only ROM cartridge that I use with my own Commodore 64.

10:58 The FDS released before audio expansion chips appeared in cartridges, not after. Disk-based games were using wavetable audio a couple of years before cartridge games started including audio expansion.
We'll explore its hardware, including the ESP32 microcontroller, Gowin FPGA, and an interesting surprise that I found inside. Plus, we’ll discuss its open-source capabilities and the pros and cons of its design, such as the low-resolution screen and its FPGA core limitations.
In addition to all of this, I designed a custom display stand for the Chromatic, and I’ll show you how you can make one yourself using the resin printing services from this video's sponsor, PCBWay. Watch to see if the Chromatic justifies its $200 price tag, and let me know your thoughts in the comments!

In this video, I dig into one of these boards, released by the FPGA development board maker, QMTech. This low-cost Cyclone V development board has taken the community by storm by offering the MiSTer experience at a fraction of the price. But how does it compare to Terasic’s DE10-Nano board?
Join me in this analysis of QMTech’s board, and find out how it compares to original board made by Terasic.

I absolutely love my Tandy Model 100. But let's face it - it's a laptop from the early 80s, and it run as early-80s speeds. But fortunately, there's a new experimental mod that lets you run the Model 100 at a whopping 5MHz. It's not an easy one, though, because there are a lot of downstream impacts when you start messing with the system clock.
In this video, I'll take you through the process of installing the clock doubler mod, and I'm going to explain how it works along the way. We'll talk about some of the nuances of the Model 100, as well as intricacies of the timing architecture.

So, in this video, I’m going to take you through the basics of how old game consoles work, and I’m going to discuss how both software emulators and FPGAs go about recreating that experience on different devices. And along the way, I’ll touch on various nuances of both approaches, and perhaps surprise you with a couple of things you may not have known about emulation. This video is a bit more technical than my usual content, but I think you’ll find the explanations and diagrams quite accessible.

The small 8 line screen on the M100 isn't all that great for playing BBS games, so we'll also do a mod that will let me use the MVT100 terminal at the same time as the WiFi modem, enabling online access with a full 80 x 25 line display.
