After years of being mired with an ugly trade war with Richmond which derailed the 1980s for both clubs, Collingwood were looking to start the 1990s afresh and snap a recent streak of finals failures. They were hot favourites leading into the game, but in their way stood the West Coast Eagles, who had enjoyed a fabulous season under new coach Mick Malthouse.
What followed was one of the most engrossing finals matches ever played. Equal parts physical and skillful, both teams did not give an inch, and in the end could not be separated on the scoreboard. A true finals classic!
