Revisiting the groundbreaking feminist performance art movement in 1970s–1980s Los Angeles, "Acting Like Women" spotlights the inspirational, transformational, radical community exploding the narrative and status quo. Through interviews, archival footage, and personal reflections, feminist artist Cheri Gaulke revisits a foundational Los Angeles art space, the Woman’s Building (1973–1991), laying bare how a collective of artists transformed their bodies and voices through performance art into a powerful tool for activism, reshaping the cultural landscape for generations of women.
In this conversation following a screening organized by the Getty Research Institute, Cheri Gaulke joins artist Anne Gauldin and Research Institute chief curator Glenn Phillips.

IAMBE FILMS in association with Metabolic Studio presents Acting Like Women, executive producers Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner and directed by Cheri Gaulke. This film is a Women Make Movies Production Assistance Project, with major assistance provided by the Annenberg Foundation, California Humanities, and hundreds of generous individuals.
Cheri Gaulke is a pioneering feminist artist whose practice spans performance, public commissions, and award-winning film. Emerging from Los Angeles’s Woman’s Building (1975), her work has appeared at MoMA, MOCA, and a Smithsonian-touring exhibition, as well as unconventional sites worldwide. Acting Like Women is her debut feature documentary.
