We were on our way to the beach in Pensacola when I spotted one of the easiest fruit trees you can grow - a mulberry! Right by the highway, loaded with fruit and taking care of itself in a weedy lot. Growing mulberries is so easy I don't know why everyone doesn't do it. Just plant a mulberry tree. Trust me - you won't regret it.

If you need trellis ideas, or a good trellis design, it's hard to beat a cattle panel trellis. We've made cattle panel hoops, long cattle panel trellises, and small cattle panel trellises that fit into a single garden bed, and today we show you how.

Today we're planting Jerusalem artichokes. They have been touted as a survival crop, yet we've found them to be less than satisfactory... except as an animal feed! This year, we're planting sunchokes for seed for next year, as they are good for pigs to eat as well as cows.
Learn more about grafting and plant propagation in FREE PLANTS FOR EVERYONE: amzn.to/3vY1zHC
When you have Bradford pear trees, why not graft useful fruiting pears onto them? Flowering pears can be used as root stock for good pears! Today you'll see our bark grafting results!

We've been obsessed with making biochar for years, often making char in pits and open burns. We've also learned to make traditional charcoal, and have even used a Kon Tiki style biochar cone.
Yet recently we can across a video from @LiveOnWhatYouGrow sharing his method of making a biochar retort from two cans - for free! We had to give it a try. This is what we've discovered.

Today I share how we germinate plums via the method of "stratifying." If you stratify plum pits in the fridge, they'll sprout in a few months. Today you'll hear why you should grow fruit trees from seed and see how baby plum trees can be easily started at home, with no special requirements.

Covering fruit trees is important, but if you use thermal mass to warm them up over night, you're really pushing the zone! Growing citrus outside of their range isn't always easy, especially when temperatures drop into the teens; yet we've figured out how to keep young trees alive during cold. Today we demonstrate how to use barrels of water to keep trees warm, plus how to use the canopy of an existing tree to create a microclimate that helps your trees stay alive.
The professional woven nursery fabric we use: amzn.to/4210wCr
This week we uncover the area we covered with weed block. Sometimes called occultation, or "tarping," covering an area of grass or weeds or a cover crop with some sort of light-excluding barrier can kill everything off beneath and leave a nice seedbed without tilling. This is a no-till gardening method of weed control which is very simple and easy to use. We have used cardboard to sheet mulch, and often still do, yet this woven nursery fabric / weed barrier is very simple and easy to use, especially when you need to kill weeds in a larger space and don't want to deal with piles of cardboard. This is a simple way to start a new garden. Through down a tarp or nursery fabric, tack it to the ground somehow, then wait and let the sun (and lack thereof) clear the ground beneath.

I visited my friends at Castra Isidore Farm and asked some questions about raising milk sheep. I was curious if milk sheep would do well in the South, and if they fit in well with cows. In today's video, you'll get to learn a bit about milk sheep, what sheep milk tastes like, why milk sheep are better than milk goats and more.

Thank you all for watching! Propagating sugarcane doesn't have to be a lot of work. Yes, you can plant sugarcane in trenches like farmers do, but you can also plant them on a small scale in pots to later plant in your yard. Grow sugarcane from single node cuttings and you'll get LOTS of sugarcane plants!

We've had quite a few questions about our concrete block three-bin compost pile system, and today we'll put the biggest one to rest.
Composting on a slab is quite possible. You don't need to compost on the ground to make compost! Yes, you may get more worms in the pile if you're right on the ground; however, you will also get tree roots, especially if you're composting over a longer period of time. After a few months, roots get into compost and can really eat up your hard work!
We have practiced composting in bins, composting on the ground, composting on slabs, composting in trenches, composting in barrels, composting in worm bins... you name it, we've either tried it or have studied it. This large compost bin system is made for producing lots of compost for our plant nursery and gardens, so we need to make sure it's easy to use, easy to keep safe from animals, and can be turned with a tractor and loaded and unloaded with ease. I've shared lots of compost ideas over the years, and this is just another one you can take or leave if you like.
Composting on a slab works just fine, and the worms and fungi and bacteria will happily show up on their own. Thank you for watching!
David's Books: amzn.to/3SO7AQi
A couple months ago we set up a test where we added mimosa (Albizia julibrissin) leaves to one bed, with a control bed next to it. Then we planted a variety of brassicas, including mustard, pak choi and cauliflower. Interestingly, the bed with the mimosa leaves has done worse than the one without. My guess is that mimosa is allelopathic to some degree and suppressed the growth.
We got the original idea for using mimosa leaves as fertilizer from a book titled Restoring the Soil by author Roland Bunch. In that book, Bunch describes using fresh Gliricidia sepium leaves as a fertilizer by burying them next to growing crops. We decided to do the same thing with mimosa.

Composting on a household scale is easy - but what about on a larger scale? We need to make lots of compost for our plant nursery, so CJ and Sam built us a big concrete compost bin capable of making tons of compost a year. We're using it for composting chicken, restaurant waste, coffee ground, peanut waste and more.

Albizia julibrissin, AKA the "mimosa tree" or "Persian silk tree," is a common species in the south, known for its ability to invade open areas and its beautiful flowers. However, it's also a nitrogen-fixing species which could be useful in food forests and as a chop-and-drop tree for permaculture projects or even for feeding garden beds. If it can do so!
Today you'll see what happened.
