The Archives | SURFER Volume 2, Issue 1 Surfer Films 2018-04-22 | After the success of John Severson's first issue of "The Surfer" in 1960, which sold over 5,000 copies, he decided to go quarterly the following year. Which brings us to the second issue of Surfer: Spring, 1961.Surfer's second issue was still mostly a one man show of Severson's photos, writing and artwork. It's easy to romanticize surfing as a whole in decades past, but in this issue Severson laments about overcrowded lineups and the homogenization of surf culture even in the early 60s. Ironically, much of this issue's content is location-oriented with a hand drawn map of Santa Cruz's surf spots and photo features on Rincon and Swami's.Embedded among Severson's mixed-media content was a comic strip by a "Guest Cartoonist." That was 16-year-old Rick Griffin. The naturally talented artist's style would later develop into one of the most recognized of 60s psychedelia. Griffin went on to design the original Rolling Stone magazine logo, a Grateful Dead album cover and much more. His comic strip in this issue, "The Gremies," pokes fun at surfers' enthusiasm for big Hawaiian surf and then quickly retreating from it when seeing it in person.There are significantly more ads for board builders and dive shops than the first issue. zx ssIn The Shaping Bay: Jon Pyzel Surfer Films 2017-07-04 | IN THE SHAPING BAY: JON PYZELA SHAPING JOURNEY THAT NEARLY NEVER WASShape just one. If it turned out poorly, he’d quit. That was the deal Jon Pyzel made to himself when he decided to shape, glass, sand, and wax up his first board as a young Santa Barbara transplant to Oahu’s North Shore. The ultimatum seems unbelievable in hindsight, considering Pyzel is now one of the most recognizable shapers in surfing, and the board oracle to the most talented surfer in the world. And he was going all-or-nothing on his debut ride, bringing no direct shaping experience with him to the island when he moved from California as a 23 year old. But for years, Pyzel’s observant study of Santa Barbara’s Matt Moore taught him the subtle intricacies of board design — enough for him to eventually test the techniques himself. He paddled out for the test run. The board, in Pyzel’s words, “wasn’t that bad.” Two-and-a half-decades and one world title-winning team rider later, Pyzel can hardly keep his boards on the shelves, as models like The Bastard (Now named The Radius) are the craft of progression for the North Shore’s elite, and beyond. Cobblestone Classic 2017 Surfer Films 2017-06-21 | 2017 COBBLESTONE CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTSREYNOLDS, ANDINO, DOHENY, YEOMANS AND MORE FLARE UP AT LOWERSLast Friday marked the inaugural Cobblestone Classic event presented by SURFER and Volcom, which pitted some of the world’s most iconic surf brands against each other, while also raising money for CA State Beaches. Four-person teams consisted of one pro surfer, two brand employees, and a grom, all of whom were jumping out of their skin to surf empty Lower Trestles. And while the waves were relatively small, the consistently rippable Lowers walls always allow for plenty of spectacle from the likes of Dane Reynolds, Kolohe Andino, Torrey Meister, Nate Yeomans, Andrew Doheny, Michael Dunphy and more. By the time the final horn sounded, …Lost surfboards had taken the win along with top bragging rights, followed by Red Bull in second, and Channel Islands in third.

Pipeline January 13th Surfer Films 2017-01-14 | Yesterday was one of the most beautiful days of the winter at Pipeline. 6- to-8 feet, light winds, bluebird conditions. From dawn to dusk perfect Pipe bombs rolled through the lineup and the second day of the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout absolutely went off. In the late afternoon, during the last heat of the day, Kalani Chapman glided into a double up from second reef and pulled in. But after falling in the tube, he never surfaced.“It was really similar to Evan’s [Geiselman] accident last year,” said Balaram Stack, who was watching from the beach when it happened. “He went down and we all looked away not thinking anything of it until someone started yelling his name and everyone went running.”Nathan Florence, Seth Moniz and the quick-acting water patrol watched what happened from the water and scrambled over to him almost immediately. They pulled him up by his leash, got him to the beach, and once there the lifeguards were able to revive him. Judging from the gash to the back of his head and the damage to the nose of his surfboard, it’s likely his board knocked him unconscious. Luckily, his leash didn’t snap. It’s the reason Nathan and Seth were able to find him underwater.“I’m so thankful Nate and Seth were able to get him on the ski and back to the beach in time to bring him back to life,” Balaram continues. “It really shows how strong and together the surf community is.”Once again we’re all reminded just how dangerous Pipeline is.
