Dover Oak – Nuclear Lake – Telephone Pioneers Shelter – Appalachian Trail NY KrizAkoni 2023-07-02 | I went back to NY later in the week to continue hiking North with a couple friends we made during our Georgia AT hike last year. This time I drove up late on a Thursday, after work, and encountered a lot of commuter traffic – I did not get to the parking lot at Depot Hill Road (AT Mile 1442.8) until very late at night. Fortunately, it was only 0.8 easy miles to the shelter and night hiking was not a problem. I tented behind Morgan Stewart Shelter and then hiked North in the AM. We passed by Nuclear Lake, a very beautiful lake. Unfortunately, there is no camping allowed near it. The water there is also contaminated from a plutonium accident…supposedly cleaned up…regardless, no one drinks it. We stayed overnight at Telephone Pioneers Shelter – the water there was flowing poorly…but it was flowing. The next day we continued North and as we approached NY22 in Pawling, we went over a nice boardwalk with a lot of redwing blackbirds. We filled up water here before continuing on to the AT Train Platform. There were a lot of day hikers present, and a bus full that arrived from the city as we were hiking through. After starting on the other side of the highway, I heard the train coming. I really wanted to video that, so I ran back to try and get it…only to catch a glimpse as it pulled away. We ended the trip in Connecticut at the Ten Mile River shelter and continued to Bull Bridge after that. Lemon Squeezer – Bear Mountain – Trailside Zoo and Carousel – Appalachian Trail NY KrizAkoni 2023-06-20 | A couple friends we made during our Georgia AT hike last year invited us to come along on their hike of the New York section. We made good on the invitation and was able to hike for a few days. I returned the following week to continue up into Connecticut. GrayJay and I found good parking at Elk Park (Mile 1387.9) and hiked South to meet up with the Northern Gypsy and FireFly. It was super hot (95F) and we only got as far as East Mombasha Road where we stopped at some strategically placed trail magic. When the others arrived, I continued the hike North with them while GrayJay got a ride back to the car and planned a water stop back at Elk Park. We ended up taking the car back around to some legal camping areas near where the trail magic was and then continued the next day from Elk Park. This section was a lot of fun. We hiked through the infamous Lemon Squeezer and around lovely Island Pond. It was much cooler that day. We passed Fingerboard shelter and ended up camping at William Brien Memorial Shelter (Mile 1397.4). Day 3 was awesome. We got good views of New York City on Black Mountain (Mile 1398.8). Although the ascent up Bear Mountain was very steep and long - the well maintained stairway made it easier. Bring a weekend, Bear Mountain was super crowded. The hike down was super easy and we enjoyed the afternoon riding the carousel and visiting the Trailside Zoo. That night we stayed at the "stone cabins" at the Inn and I hiked over the Hudson and over to where the trail goes up the mountain ion the other side. It was a nice evening with trains and tug boats below. The build quality is extremely high. Mine weighed in at just over 17 ounces. This is from my 1st weekend overnight with it on the Appalachian Trail in New York near Pawling. I plan to do a more detailed review once I get more time in it.The tent can be pitched with 4 stakes. However, it works better with 6. The 4 corners should be pretty beefy stakes, as they take all the load holding the tent up. Elk Garden to Burke’s Garden – Grayson Highlands – Long Section Hike – Appalachian Trail VA KrizAkoni 2023-04-30 | It’s been quite a while since I got out on a hike and this felt good to get out on a nice long hike. More information can be found over on their channel youtube.com/@AOKForagingandAdventuresI’m hiking the 1st 76.3 miles from Elk Garden at VA600 / AT Mile 494.9 to Burke’s Garden Hostel at Walker Gap / AT mile 571.2 with Thack.This is a wonderful section of trail that I’ve hiked on many times before and would highly recommend. It has a little of everything, from waterfalls and forests, to wild ponies and balds. Water is plentiful along this section, as is camping. Happened across a large number of through hikers on this trip, which made things fun and interesting! @couchtotrail2023 happens to be vlogging their journey - follow along and help cheer them on. 2011 Taurus Roof Molding Removal and Installation – How to Remove Car Roof Trim – Peeling Roof Trim KrizAkoni 2023-04-08 | Quick video on removal and installation of the roof trim / molding on my 2011 Ford Taurus. This was much easier than I expected and requires no special tools. I had originally planned on replacing the trim, but it was super expensive at around $180US for the pair. I chose instead to clean them up with a Dremel sander, clean up with alcohol, and paint with black undercoating. I let the paint dry in the sun for 4 hours prior to installation. Mt. Algo Shelter Hike – Appalachian Trail CT KrizAkoni 2023-03-11 | It’s been a while since I posted a video. This is my second section in Connecticut as I continue to try and get these sections of the Appalachian Trail done over the winter. This was another quick in and out with an overnight at Mt. Algo Shelter.The trail along this section was amazingly beautiful, with several viewpoints and waterfalls. The area around the Schaghticoke Mtn Campsite was especially nice with waterfalls and flat camping. The privy was a little “open”…well, maybe a lot open, lol. Mt. Algo Shelter is a standard 6-person shelter with porcupine prevention on the front – a ledge / wall with a gap to keep animals from entering the shelter – also makes is a little awkward for people, especially getting out at night to use the privy... There is water right nearby and the privy is awesome. Parking at Schaghticoke Road has space for a few cars and is about 0.3 miles back to Bulls Bridge. At the other end on CT Route 341, there is roadside parking for a few cars. Appalachian Trail 2022 Hiking Year in Review – Happy New Year! KrizAkoni 2023-01-01 | Thank you so much for following along on our journey hiking the Appalachian Trail and being a part of our adventure! The channel has reached nearly 3000 subscribers this year and we’ve met so many amazing people! I hope everyone has an amazing 2023! In late 2024 I plan to attempt a through hike of the Appalachian Trail. The plan is to start SOBO from Katahdin in September and continue South until the weather stops me. I'll restart in February from Springer in GA and hike North in a traditional manner. With over half the trail complete as a section hike, I feel this affords me the quickest way to complete the trail after retirement while also attempting a through hike. 2022 was a tough grind to finally get Virginia completed. It took nearly 5 years of working at it, through the good and bad, and it’s finally done. The Virginia Blues are real! I also did something that I had not done before – two, week long trips. The 1st was to Hike all of Georgia AT, and the second was to hostel hop the Southern section of VA. Having completed both, I now have hiked a continuous path from the NY/NJ border all the way to the VA/TN border and also completed GA. We met a lot a great people on the trail and got to hike some distance with fellow hiking Vloggers (YouTube/Instagram). There were cold days, and many ugly hot days…and of course some wet days too. We did not make it to NH this year – maybe in 2023, we’ll see. I can’t believe the year is over already. Happy new year to everyone! Altra Lone Peak 7 – Comparison to Lone Peak 6 – Box Opening and 1st Impression KrizAkoni 2022-12-29 | Gone is the bright orange box in favor of something more plain, and with that comes some substantial changes to the shoe. I was surprised to have these before Christmas this year, they shipped earlier than they were supposed to. I Love the way these smell out of the box… I’ve been using Altra Lone Peak trail runners for all my Appalachian Trail hikes. After having blister and knee issues with other types of shoes a few years back, I tried the “zero drop” Altra Lone Peak 3.0 and loved them. They fit me perfectly and feel great. I kept buying them until they were no longer available. Altra has evolved the series over time, releasing the 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5, 6, the 7 versions of the shoe. More often than not, people complained about the fit of the new versions and universally, the rubber toe was notorious for peeling off. Version 5 and 6 had stitched toe caps that fixed the peeling. The 1st thing You’re going to notice with the 7s is they have gone stitch less - the uppers are pretty much glued everywhere. Unlike the Lone Peak 5 and 6, the new lone Peak 7 version of the shoe has dropped the stitched toe! I hope this is not a mistake. Also gone are the extra holes for lacing in the center of the shoe.2nd big change is the lack of drainage holes. There are NO drain holes that I can see. The previous versions had lots of holes to let water out and the 7s seem to have replaced them with this transparent screen area on the side - this material is very venty…but on the top/side of the shoe. The overall material is pretty thin, so this might not be an issue.3rd change is the overall toe cap material. These had been betting progressively better, adding protection from stubbing your toes on roots and rocks. The 7s, although maybe more durable, seem quite a bit thinner and rubbery.The last big difference, and maybe the most significant structurally, is a hard plastic heel cup. It's made from a very hard plastic and sandwiched between the upper and the sole. I have concerns this will cause a hot spot in use and my feet are sensitive to this. Despite thinner materials and removal of stitching, the shoe is over a half ounce heaver each. My 6s were 299 grams and these are 320 grams.The sole pattern has been updated with a few more lugs and the material seems a little more sticky.They have also fixed the ridiculous finger strap from the 6.After over 500 miles on the 6, I had no issues with peeling. Out of the box, the Lone Peak 7 fits true to size, just like my old 3.0, 5, and the 6 did. Note these are now available in “wide” and “medium/standard” width. I purchased the medium width. Ten Mile River Shelter and Bull’s Bridge – Appalachian Trail CT KrizAkoni 2022-11-25 | I’ve started the Connecticut sections of the Appalachian Trail and hope to get these done over the winter. This was a quick in and out to get started and also visit the Bull’s Bridge, a covered bridge in Kent Connecticut that was originally built in 1760and replaced in 1842. There is a nearby “Country Store” with limited resupply and snackage. It was a pretty sad establishment…I was expecting much better in CT.The trail along this section was pretty easy, with one view at the top of Ten Mile Hill, a 1000’ peak along the way. The views along the Ten Mile River and Housatonic River were very nice! Ten Mile River Shelter is a standard 6-person shelter with porcupine prevention on the front – a ledge / wall with a gap to keep animals from entering the shelter – also makes is a little awkward for people, especially getting out at night to use the privy... There used to be a well hand pump at the shelter site that was closed a couple years ago due to inability to comply with clean water “regulations”. The water from either of the two rivers is too polluted to drink, leaving an intermittent spring very close to the shelter (under the power lines) just North, or the stream way back by the parking. Parking at CT Route 55 Hiker lot is plentiful and right on the trail just North of the border. Sunblesa H11 Ultralight Headlamp vs. Nitecore NU25 – Gear Review KrizAkoni 2022-11-10 | This is a quick review of the Sunblesa H11 headlamp. For the most part, this is a very worthy clone of the Nitecore NU25 and has been working very well for me over my last few hikes. The battery lasts a very log time and it appears to hold a charge well. I’ve had no issues with the lamp and in terms of brightness levels, I prefer the way this one is set up over the NU25. Specifically, the lowest setting is just a little brighter than the NU25, which I like. During my testing, I did notice an issue with the SOS feature where the light pattern is inverted (On vs Off). This led to a bit of confusion when I first was looking at that mode and would be equally confusing to someone in the field. I suggest not relying on that feature of the light. Dragon’s Tooth and Pickle Branch Shelter – Appalachian Trail VA KrizAkoni 2022-11-07 | This was the final gap filler for me for Virginia, up and over Dragon’s Tooth (AT Mile 702.3)! Virginia is the longest state on the Appalachian Trail at ~557 miles, including the 25 miles of shared WV border. We started at the Dragon’s Tooth parking area on VA311 around AT mile 704.2 and cut over to the AT via the yellow blazed “Boy Scout Trail”, finishing Day 1 over on the other side at Pickle Branch Shelter (AT Mile 697.9). We returned to the car the next day almost the same way, except we followed the Dragon’s Tooth blue blaze trail back down. The AT on the North side of Dragon’s Tooth is extremely nice with some great views, technical in a couple areas, and definitely worth hiking. If visiting Dragon’s Tooth, I would suggest doing a loop, using the AT on the way up and the much easier blue blaze back down. The trail up to the top is the best part of the hike…don’t miss the AT on the North side of the Tooth! Audie Murphy Memorial and Niday Shelter – Appalachian Trail VA KrizAkoni 2022-10-21 | This was another gap filler between Audie Murphy Memorial (AT Mile 693) and Niday Shelter (AT Mile 687.8).We started at the parking at the top of Brush Mountain Road, a 3.3-mile-long dirt road that winds its way up to a pretty good parking lot 0.7 miles from the Audie Murphy Memorial and less than 0.1 to the AT, and hiked without packs to the memorial and back. The memorial is quite nice and there is a nearby view that is also very good. Afterwards, we put our packs on and hiked South toward Niday Shelter. When we got to the bottom of the section at VA621, we decided to back track to the car to move it around to the parking at VA621. It was supposed to rain the next day and we were trying to minimize hiking in the rain. The shelter area was very nice, with an A+ privy. Water source was also good. As luck would have it, the next morning on the way out, we ran into “Fresh Ground” and his Leapfrog Café. He’s a well-known trail angel that roves the AT throughout hiker season making breakfast and dinner for the passing hikers. He does a fund raiser on the off season and can be found on Instagram and Facebook as @freshgroundleapfrogcafe. Breakfast was awesome! Baileys Gap, War Spur, and Laurel Creek Shelters – Wind Rock and Kelly Knob – Appalachian Trail VA KrizAkoni 2022-10-15 | Beautiful hike filling the gap between Big Stony Creek Road at VA 635 (AT Mile 659.1) and the parking at VA Route 630 near Keffer Oak.I started at Big Stony Creek Road and hiked two miles up the hill to Bailey’s Gap Shelter. The intent was to hike in and out to snag this little section and then move the car 19 miles North and hike back to the shelter to stay the night. The shelter ended up being pretty sad, so I decided to put the car mid-way at VA613 parking near Wind Rock, hit Bailey’s Gap again and then go North to the War Spur shelter. The trail was super rocky between VA613 and Bailey’s Gap Shelter. I decided to hike back North using a forest road accessible just North of the shelter with a minor bushwack. The forest road was nice and smooth. I stayed the night at War Spur shelter intending to continue hiking North. I realized I forgot my water treatment, so I again hiked back to Wind Rock parking and moved the car all the way to the Keffer Oak parking and came back in from the North, passing Laurel Creek Shelter and Kelly Knob. In the end, I’m glad I did this. The trail was steep in places and this helped spread the pain. The hike South from Kelly Knob off the ridge is steep and relentless. Sarver Hollow Shelter – Keffer Oak – Bruisers Knob Cairns – Appalachian Trail Virginia KrizAkoni 2022-09-21 | Getting very close to finishing Virginia now… Only 48 miles to go!This was a quick overnight that filled in sections North from Peter’s Mountain Trailhead along the river to the next road crossing and then farther North between VA630 Parking Near Keffer Oak and Sarver Hollow Shelter. Keffer Oak is really amazing. It’s huge and well-shaped with not much damage. It’s over 300 years old and stands over 60’ tall. It also has a circumference of 20’. Up on the ridge, there are some rock piles known a Bruisers Cairns. I was underwhelmed by these….they were, um, slightly interesting rock piles. Sarver Hollow Shelter is very nice and pretty big. It has a covered picnic table and the water is good. The downside is that it is .45 miles down in a hole. The tent sites are pretty rocky too. Durston X-Mid Pro 2 - Overview and Rain Test Review - Ultralight Gear - Appalachian Trail KrizAkoni 2022-09-12 | The Durston gear X-Mid Pro 2 that I ordered in January finally came in and it exceeded my expectations. The build quality is extremely high and the design is very innovative. It’s bigger (taller and longer) than the Zpacks Duplex and mine weighed in at 20.2 ounces (574 grams). I took it on an overnight on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia on the “rollercoaster”. The forecast predicted heavy rain overnight, which was perfect for what I wanted to do. Test the tent on an overnight in the rain. It does take up a little bit more footprint than the Duplex, however, finding a good tent site was not an issue. For really tight spots, use the "Skinny Pitch": youtube.com/watch?v=SbJk5cTaIx0 and youtube.com/watch?v=OJzqLmPw3bcThe tent can be pitched with 4 stakes. However, these should be pretty beefy stakes, as they take all the load holding the tent up and two of the corners are pretty steep angles. I added a 5th stake to hold the door flap secure but it is not necessary. There are extra tie off points on the pole peaks and the unit shipped with line to tie to them if desired. As expected, rain did come. The tent for the most part did stay dry inside. It was both humid and raining and the condensation rolled down and out (with one exception) and the rain stayed out. A few drops of condensation did migrate down the front wall of the tent and collected on the mesh that makes up the door. This ended up rolling down the inside of the mesh and entering the tent. I will need to experiment with setup to see if I can mitigate that. When I got home, I weighed the tent again. This was after shaking it mostly dry before rolling up and placing in the supplied sack, which is plenty big. The tent, wet, weighed 1146 grams (40.42 ounces – about 2.52 pounds). That’s a 1.26-pound weight gain (doubled its weight). Not bad for a soaking wet 2-person tent. This is an excellent blender and I was sad when the drive coupler exploded apart. Good news is the part was extremely easy to find and replace.NOTE – The coupler is reverse threaded, which means clockwise (right) to remove and counter clockwise (left) to tighten.The little wrench that comes with the replacement parts makes this super easy to change. If it does not come off by hand, a pair of channel lock pliers will work. Some videos use a screwdriver to break it off. Jenkins Shelter to Brushy Top - Laurel Creek - Appalachian Trail Virginia KrizAkoni 2022-08-01 | This was a quick overnight to complete some miles between Jenkins Shelter (AT Mile 580.5) and US Route 52 at Brushy Mountain Outpost (AT Mile 591.8). I parked at the big parking lot on VA615, Suiter Road / Laurel Creek in the Trail Boss Loop parking area (AT Mile 584.9). This is right on the AT and excellent parking. The trail North to Route 52 is pretty uneventful. Fortunately, there were a lot of mushrooms sprouting from all the wet weather and a few late blooming flowers were left. Otherwise, it’s a pretty plain section. After hiking North to Route 52, I returned South to where I started. There is ample camping just North of Laurel Creek bridge…one site with a picnic table right on the trail. Rather than stay there, I continued South to Jenkins Shelter, another 4.4 miles. After getting up on the ridge, the trail was a very soft flat forest road for most of the way to Jenkins. Jenkins Shelter area was very nice with lots of tent space. 2011 Ford Taurus Oxygen Sensor Replacement – P0150 Code NEXPOW OBD2 Scanner – Bank 2 Sensor 1 – Easy KrizAkoni 2022-07-08 | This video shows how I changed the O2 sensor in my 2011 Ford Taurus SEL. To get the sensor out, you will need a sensor socket (has a slot to allow wire access) and a long ratchet extender. After soaking the area with PB Blaster, I was able to remove the sensor using a 3/8 drive flex head ratchet, a couple of extenders, and a long handle extension for the ratchet. Although the terrain was pretty forgiving between Trimpi Shelter and I81, it was super humid and it seemed everything I drank sweat out my clothes quickly. The longer I hiked, the more I wanted a shower and laundry at the Alpaca Farm...which was much farther than I planned to hike today. I stopped briefly at Lindamood School to hide from a passing storm only to get hit with another later on. BTW, the Mount Rogers visitor center was open and they had epic air conditioned restrooms! Eating gas station Mexican as I post this…despite everything I think it was a good day.

Saunders Shelter to the Tennessee Virginia Border – Damascus – Appalachian Trail Virginia KrizAkoni 2022-06-27 | Completing the Georgia Appalachian Trail has motivated me to push hard to get VA done. VA is the longest state and I’ve been treating it like building a puzzle over the last 5 years…now it’s time to work the edges! Driving down to Damascus takes about 6 hours for me, so when I drive that far I need to make it worth it. This trip I pressed hard and hiked 40 miles, filling in over 27 miles of trail while also passing my 900 mile mark! On day 1, after the long drive down, I hiked from the Library at Damascus to the TN/VA border and back. It was a pretty nice hike and the weather was still cool from the front that came through. The rhododendrons were still in bloom and I saw mostly white ones that I has never seen before. I stayed the night at The Dancing Bear Inn. dancingbear-damascus.comI would highly recommend this place to stay and will stay here again when I return to the area. The owners are extremely nice and the facilities are very neat and clean. It is wonderfully quiet and centrally located in Damascus.I was able to hang out with Brant for a bit who I had not seen in a while: youtube.com/c/BrantGarveyHikeHe was painting a mural for The Dancing Bear Inn and also has a number of other works of art around town. The next morning, I got a ride North up to Summit Cut on US 58 to hike South 17 miles back to Damascus. It was a beautiful hike, and fortunately mostly downhill. I had planned on staying up top on Whitetop Mountain that night but the camp site I liked was full. After a brief rest, I moved the car up to Dickey Gap to put in a few more miles that day, filling in more holes. I ended up hiking 25 miles that day…the farthest I’ve ever hiked in a day. I wanted to do a marathon day…the lack of sunlight and known tent sites prevented this from happening. I was also pretty used up. Day 3 I cleaned up a few more miles near Trimpi Shelter and then headed back home. Chestnut Knob Shelter – Knot Maul Branch Shelter – Lick Creek Crossing – Appalachian Trail Virginia KrizAkoni 2022-05-23 | This was a super fun hike and I got to cross paths with “Stan the Man” @stanthemanhikes2965, “Monarch” @travelingwithtonya, and her dog Zoby who are working their way North attempting Through Hikes of the Appalachian Trail. The plan was to hike South to meet up with them, bringing some cool drinks and snacks, and then hike back NOBO to camp. Day 2 I had planned to go North as far as Chestnut Knob shelter, stay the night, and then return South back to my car. Things evolved and that plan changed. Parking is down VA Route 625, a long 8 mile single lane dirt road. The parking area has room for about 4 or 5 cars and is right on the trail (AT Mile 565.2). I hiked SOBO and had to take my shoes and socks off to cross Lick Creek. The bridge is out there and the water was not quite knee deep. I continued South past Knot Maul Branch Shelter to an area of beautiful pastures (AT Mile 556.4). I rested under a nice big tree with a view and waited for Stan and Monarch to emerge. We hiked back North to a wonderful camp on a stream at mile 561.5. On the way though, Stan could not resist walking down one of the roads to get ice cream at Bear Garden Hiker Hostel. After a good night’s rest, we continued North…when we passed my car, everyone dumped their trash and we snacked up… It was at this time a new plan formed where I would do a supply run and bring snacks and water 11 miles North to the next road crossing and hike North a bit for another night. This required me to hike another 4.6 miles back down the hill from the shelter that I was not expecting. It was a long day for me, but worth it. The trail North of Chestnut Knob Shelter was a bit dry. Chestnut Knob Shelter is fully enclosed and a bit stuffy for warm weather. It seemed like it would be a lot of fun in the winter…I might plan to come back to it when the snow falls. The parking farther North along VA623 was another long ride up a gravel road, with parking for 4-5 cars. Green Monster Loop Trail System – The Best Unknown Trail System in PA – Tioga State Forest KrizAkoni 2022-05-22 | This Is an exceptionally nice hiking loop that has a few steep sections amongst what is mostly gentle switchbacks between old forest roads. The lower portions of the trail runs along a beautiful mossy brook with cascading falls that are easy to reach and not too far from the parking. The Overall loop is about 16 miles and the portion we hiked was about 14.5 miles. There are not very many tent sites along this trail.
