With new album, Sonder, Dermot Kennedy admits he’s never related to a word more. Sonder, “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own,” encapsulates universal themes of love, loss & hope, with the platinum-selling artist evolving into an even more expressive and powerful storyteller
LYRICS:
Don't tell me this is all for nothing I can only tell you one thing On the nights you feel outnumbered Baby I'll be out there somewhere I see everything you can be I see the beauty that you can't see On the nights you feel outnumbered Baby I'll be out there somewhere
I could've showed you all the scars at the start But that was always the most difficult part See I'm in love with how your soul's a mix of chaos and art And how you never try to keep 'em apart I wrote some words and then I stared at my feet Became a coward when I needed to speak I guess love took on a different kind of meaning for me So when I go just know it kills me to leave
To all the stars that light the road Don't ever leave that girl so cold Never let me down, just lead me home
Don't tell me this is all for nothing I can only tell you one thing On the nights you feel outnumbered Baby I'll be out there somewhere I see everything you can be I see the beauty that you can't see On the nights you feel outnumbered Baby I'll be out there somewhere But there's beauty here that's yet to depart There's still a song inside the halls in the dark I'll come for you if you just stay where you are And I'll always hold your hand in the car
There'll be days when it's difficult But I ask you to never leave behind the reciprocal, we're past that Love is not designed for the cynical So we have that We can have that
To all the stars that light the road Don't ever leave that girl so cold Never let me down, just lead me home
Don't tell me this is all for nothing I can only tell you one thing On the nights you feel outnumbered Baby I'll be out there somewhere I see everything you can be I see the beauty that you can't see On the nights you feel outnumbered Baby I'll be out there somewhere
How long can you wait for the one you deserve Fight on Never let it out Never let it out
I'm gone If you ever leave I hope that you learn to fight on To fight on
Don't tell me this is all for nothing I can only tell you one thing On the nights you feel outnumbered Baby I'll be out there somewhere I see everything you can be I see the beauty that you can't see On the nights you feel outnumbered Baby I'll be out there somewhere

Lyrics: Who was I to deserve such a love? Who was I to have her holding me up? If there’s some kind of sign in the stars, it wasn’t revealed I talk about light in the dark, but it hasn’t come here
I can’t explain all the doubt that’s within I can’t erase memories of places we’ve been If the world ever fucked with my heart, she always stepped in There’s a version of life that I want, but it wasn’t like this
The party’s over, she’s not coming back I’d give up all the world for just one Sunday that we had In time, I will heal The moonlight’s on the open road, Tonight it’s not so bad
Used to try write it down in a word But no phrase could come close to her worth To witness the way that she moved, and how she stayed still Was a beauty that I haven’t seen since and I never will
The party’s over, she’s not coming back I’d give up all the world for just one Sunday that we had In time, I will heal The moonlight’s on the open road, Tonight it’s not so bad
Who am I to curse the past? Just cause magic didn’t last You’re one of few, boy Who can safely say they had Somebody truly love them back
The party’s over, she’s not coming back I’d give up all the world for just one Sunday that we had In time, I will heal The moonlight’s on the open road, Tonight it’s not so bad

Lately I’ve been living in a dream The past feels like a better place to be The days we spent just sitting by the sea Empyrean skies can’t compete with those eyes The colours of that dress you loved to wear The way the sun got tangled in your hair
I remember everything so why do I…
I get this feeling like I’m fading from your memory So I wrote this song and called it Don’t Forget Me Every time you hear it will you smile? And tell the one you’re with I was that guy Even though you had to let me go, don’t forget me Just don’t forget me
Every time I think about it now I guess we never really figured out To hold each other through the ups and downs The difficult nights, the times that we cried I hope he knows it’s special, what he has I hope he thinks it’s magic when you laugh
‘Cos I remember everything so why do I…
I get this feeling like I’m fading from your memory So I wrote this song and called it Don’t Forget Me Every time you hear it will you smile? And tell the one you’re with I was that guy Even though you had to let me go, don’t forget me Just don’t forget me
On that one night It was so right You were all mine How could we let it go? That one night Was my whole life And we stopped timeDermot Kennedy - Lovers Dont Die (Live From The Bridge Studio)Dermot Kennedy2023-05-22 | The new album Sonder is out now: dermotkennedy.lnk.to/sonder

"When the world is falling apart, love can still sustain you." That's Dermot Kennedy's synopsis of the message behind "Kiss Me." The Irish singer, an expert balladeer, waxes uptempo on this pop-slanted gem, part of his acclaimed 'Ponder' album from last November. "I've always written these songs that feel big, like they have this imagery, and so it be quite disappointing when a music video doesn't match that. You always want to bring things to life in the most, not epic, but the most powerful way possible. I thought [directing duo AB/CD/CD] and I had a similar vision. When you collaborate with somebody, you want them to be as excited as you. They brought a lot of enthusiasm, and I appreciated that."

His dad drove him to open mic nights in Dublin. His mom encouraged him to study music at university. Both gave him the green light when it came to busking in the streets of Ireland and the US. No one was really standing in the way of Dermot Kennedy moving forward with his tunes, and confidence is something the singer always had in his back pocket. It was bolstered when Glen Hansard gave him a thumbs up and his phone number. When Kennedy's 'Without Fear' debut arrived in 2019 his various supporters were proven right: here was a sizable talent to be shared with the world. "Giants," "Power Over Me," and "Outnumbered" made an impact. He was on his way. Lollapalooza, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Tiny Desk - dude played everywhere, and was nominated for a 2020 BRIT award. Then he moved to New York to make his 'Sonder' follow-up and it worked out well because Gotham is a place where he was reminded to "have empathy and be conscious of other people's struggles and triumphs." Indeed, that's pretty much what the term 'sonder' means: an awareness of the lives being lived around you. His sophomore disc hit last November, and we finally got Kennedy into our UK studio to roll through some of its gems.

Lyrics: I’ve seen stars reborn in your eyes Sky’s on fire tonight One life is never long enough One life is never long enough
At last call turn out the lights I hope I treated you right One life is never long enough for us
Too many people walk around with hearts hiding Terrified of hurting so they stay silent Don’t know what it’s worth just to let a light in through the shade If love had come to me I wouldn’t recognize it Now every time you smile It’s a little priceless No story I could weave would have ended like this, no way
All your troubles, all your pain Let me struggle, carry that weight All your devils fall away You’re so easy to love
I’ve seen stars reborn in your eyes Sky’s on fire tonight One life is never long enough One life is never long enough
At last call turn out the lights I hope I treated you right One life is never long enough for us
Every time I look at you I’m reminded That nothing lasts forever, nothing stays timeless Someday there’ll be a kiss and there’ll be goodbyes We’re not exempt
Oh I could lay beside you thousand lifetimes Live a thousand more and still pray for sunrise Everything before you was a warning of what it meant
All your troubles, all your pain Let me struggle, carry that weight All your devils fall away You’re so easy to love
I’ve seen stars reborn in your eyes Sky’s on fire tonight One life is never long enough One life is never long enough
At last call turn out the lights I hope I treated you right One life is never long enough for us
One life is never long enough One life is never long enough One life is never long enough for us
I don’t want it to be over I don’t wanna say goodnight Want that morning in December For the rest of my life
I don’t want it to be over I don’t wanna say goodnight that morning in December For the rest of my life
I’ve seen stars reborn in your eyes Sky’s on fire tonight One life is never long enough One life is never long enough
At last call turn out the lights I hope I treated you right One life is never long enough for us
One life is never long enough One life is never long enough

Lyrics: If we could take a photo Eternalize this moment For the days when I don't believe When our love gets stolen 'Cause there's no exception And I know time will take you far from me Let this night invade my lungs You're all I wanna breathe Right beside the lake, I burn for you You burn for me So kiss me the way that you would If we died tonight Hold me the way that you would For the final time Whatever may come, somewhere deep inside There's always this version of you and I So just kiss me the way that you would If we died tonight, if we died tonight, yeah All the deepest secrets All the darkest moments Oh, I promise they'll be safe with me We've all been broken There's no exception But you carry it so gracefully Let this night invade my lungs You're all I want to breathe Right beside the lake, I burn for you You burn for me So kiss me the way that you would If we died tonight Hold me the way that you would For the final time, yeah Whatever may come, somewhere deep inside There's always this version of you and I So just kiss me the way that you would If we died tonight, if we died tonight, yeah So I let this night in my lungs You're all that I wanna breathe Right beside you, down at the lake I burn for you, burn for me, mm So kiss me the way that you would If we died tonight And hold me the way that you would For the final time, yeah Whatever may come, somewhere deep inside There's always this version of you and I So just kiss me the way that you would If we died tonight, if we died tonight, yeah If we died tonight, yeah Oh, oh If we died tonight, yeah

Lyrics: Ever since I was a young boy, running through grass I was a dreamer writing stories down the back of the class Now I sit at this piano with my heart in my hands Take my love and all my loss and get the darkness to dance
I knew that you were for me when you started to smile Time was slowing down we could have been there a while Told me you were mine, already knew I was yours So, isn’t that worth something?
I can’t promise easy days And I can’t keep the rain away Ain’t got a song to sing without your loving Isn’t that worth something?
I might show up a little late I’ll try to learn from my mistakes Ain’t got a song to sing without your loving Isn’t that worth something? Isn’t that worth something?
So remind me, when you can, about the way that we felt I’m still the one you call when there’s a story to tell I’m still the one you call whenever you’re hurt Isn’t that worth something?
I can’t promise easy days And I can’t keep the rain away Ain’t got a song to sing without your loving Isn’t that worth something?
I might show up a little late I’ll try to learn from my mistakes Ain’t got a song to sing without your loving Isn’t that worth something? Isn’t that worth something?
I promise that there’ll still be days the sun doesn’t rise I promise that I’ll make you laugh whenever you cry I honestly just wanna be the one on your mind Isn’t that worth something?

‘Something to Someone’ Lyrics:
There’s lessons in love sometimes The heart is but a winding road, So this story goes.
I get scared of the dark and I, I never even noticed rooms Were made bright by you.
Oh you loved me more than anyone, Yea we were up so high
We were lost when we were young but, You were mine
Once upon a time You were by my side I wish I could’ve known That I should hold on tight To every single word To every summer night I wish I could’ve known That forever was a lie
But once upon a time I was something to someone Once upon a time I was something to someone
See your shape under gold street lights But every time I’m close you move And I’m just left with the truth
Something to you Something to you
Once upon a time You were by my side I wish I could’ve known That I should hold on tight To every single word To every summer night I wish I could’ve known That forever was a lie

Better days are coming If no one told ya I hate to hear you crying Over the phone, dear For seven years running You’ve been a soldier But better days are coming Better days are coming for you
So when the night feels like forever I’ll remember what you said to me
I know you’ve been hurting Waiting on a train that just won’t come The rain it ain’t permanent And soon, we’ll be dancing in the sun We’ll be dancing in the sun And we’ll sing your song together
We never miss the flowers Until the sun’s down We never count the hours Until they’re running out You’re on the other side of the storm now You should be so proud And better days are coming Better days are coming for you
So when the night feels like forever I’ll remember what you said to me
I know you’ve been hurting Waiting on a train that just won’t come The rain it ain’t permanent And soon, we’ll be dancing in the sun We’ll be dancing in the sun And we’ll sing your song together
Your story’s gonna change Just wait for better days You’ve seen too much of pain Now you don’t even know
That your story’s gonna change Just wait for better days I promise you I won’t let go
I know you’ve been hurting Waiting on a train that just won’t come The rain it ain’t permanent And soon, we’ll be dancing in the sun We’ll be dancing in the sun And we’ll sing your song together

Sonder, “the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own,” encapsulates universal themes of love, loss & hope, with the platinum-selling artist evolving into an even more expressive and powerful storyteller
Lyrics: Better days are comin' If no one told you I hate to hear you cryin' Over the phone, dear For seven years runnin' You've been a soldier But better days are comin' Better days are comin' for you So when the night feels like forever (Mh-mh) I'll remember what you said to me I know you've been hurtin' Waitin' on a train that just won't come The rain, it ain't permanent And soon, we'll be dancin' in the sun We'll be dancin' in the sun And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh) And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh) We never miss the flowers Until the sun's down We never count the hours Until they're runnin' out You're on the other side of the storm now You should be so proud And better days are comin' Better days are comin' for you So when the night feels like forever (Mh-mh) I'll remember what you said to me I know you've been hurting (is our time ever soothing?) Waiting on a train that just won't come The rain, it ain't permanent (is our time ever soothing?) And soon, we'll be dancing in the sun We'll be dancing in the sun And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh) And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh) And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh) And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh) Your story's gonna change Just wait for better days You've seen too much of pain Now, you don't even know That your story's gonna change Just wait for better days I promise you, I won't let go I know you've been hurting Waiting on a train that just won't come The rain, it ain't permanent (is our time ever soothing?) And soon, we'll be dancing in the sun We'll be dancing in the sun And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh) And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh) And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh) And we'll sing your song together (eh-eh, eh-eh)
