The devastating love story of Prince William of Gloucester & Hungarian model Zsuzsi Starkloff.
Prince William of Gloucester was the Queen’s first cousin and, at the time of her wedding in 1947 where was a page boy, he was fourth in line for the throne.
But as a young man, William decided not to follow strict royal protocol and join the army. Instead, he craved adventure and a normal life away from the prying eyes of the royal family.
In 1968, William moved to Japan where he worked in the diplomatic services and that’s where he fell madly in love with beautiful Hungarian model Zsuzsi Starkloff.
The story of William and Zsuzsi began as a fairy tale — but sadly, this fairy tale has a tragic ending.
In 2015 Zsuzsi gave a rare interview for this documentary, opening up about their love story and of the grief she was still feeling for the man she fell in love with nearly half a century ago.
Zsuzsi was still wearing a chain around her neck with a “W” on a cygnet ring, given to her by the man she referred to as the love of her life, Prince William of Gloucester.
William was also idolised by the young Prince Charles, who adored his older cousin.
In 1958, William was sent to Eton for his schooling before he studied at Cambridge University. Yet, even though he grew up in the spotlight, he was said to always desire a life away from the confines of a royal role.
It was his career that led him to Zsuzsi, the woman he loved — even though some members of the royal family were determined that he would not be allowed to marry her
“A British prince and a Hungarian girl met in Tokyo Japan 47 years ago. It’s a beautiful story,” Zsuzsi said in the documentary.
Zsuzsi, a single mother, was living in Tokyo and having great success working as a model.
In September 1968, William took a position with the British embassy in Japan. He was passionate about aviation and even spent 16 days flying himself from London to Tokyo for his new position as a pilot.
Love for William and Zsuzsi blossomed quickly and, according to Zsuzsi, three months into the relationship William said, “I never thought love could be this beautiful.”
“I get misty eyed just thinking about that. It was a beautiful compliment,” Zsuzsi said.
But when news that William was dating a single mother got back to England, it wasn’t long before the royal family came to visit.
In 1969, William’s cousin Princess Margaret arrived in Tokyo. She was apparently there for “British Week” which focused on British and Japanese trade relations, but it was clear she was also there to check up on William.
According to biographer Christopher Wilson, Princess Margaret’s real purpose was to scupper William’s relationship.
By 1979, Prince William had decided to marry Zsuzsi but, when his father suffered a stroke, he had to return to England, where he was put under pressure to end his relationship.
Still, William was determined to bring his partner to England to meet his family.
The couple endured a series of separations over the following two years, but Zsuzsi knew William intended to marry her, giving her a commitment ring.
However, tragedy struck on August 28, 1972 when William died in a plane crash just minutes after taking off for an air race near Wolverhampton in the West Midlands. He’d invited Zsuzsi to join him but she had other commitments that day.
William was just thirty years old. On his finger was the replica of the ring he’d given Zsuzsi which had been made at her request.
Prince Charles was devastated at the loss of his cousin. Charles, who was only 23 at the time, looked up to William and in 1982, when his first son was born, he named him in his honour.
Zsuzsi, who spent the rest of her life in Colorado, was completely heartbroken to lose William. She never truly got over the death of the man she still calls the love of her life.
“THERE ISN"T A DAY THAT I DON'T THINK ABOUT WILLIAM. NOT A DAY,” Zsuzsi said.
Zsuzsi died in May 2020 at the age of 83. She is survived by her partner Don Sundin her daughter Andrea, and her two grandsons.
