Sandhill cranes are large birds with long , thin legs and necks. The birds cheeks are white and its forehead has a bright red patch, which is one of the bird's most noticeable features.
90 percent of their diet is plant material, including roots, waste grain, berries, and insects, nuts , mice, snakes, frogs, snails as well.
They mate for life. But will find another mate if one of them perishes. They attract each other by a courtship dance with moves like jumping into the air, bobbing heads and stretching their wings to span 7 feet.
They can stand up to 4 ft tall. And weigh up to 14.8 lbs.
During migration, these sandhill cranes may travel more than 200 miles in a day. They are fast filers, reaching speeds of up to 35 miles per hour.
