As you’ll see in this new video, we're getting very excited for the Olympics this summer. Both human and equine athletes get drug tested at the Olympics, so I thought I’d venture to the Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory to learn more. At the lab, Dr. Heather Knych has a herd of retired sport horses to perform drug administration studies to determine how drug concentrations change over time in a horse’s system and the physiologic effects of the drugs.
Understanding these interactions helps officials prevent doping in equine competitions. Administering substances into the horses is not only unfair, but can endanger both horse and rider. We're proud of the Maddy Lab’s role in keeping competitors safe.
