SEPTA’s Silverliner IV fleet has come under scrutiny this year due to a rash of fires. As a result of these fires, the Federal Railroad Administration issued an Emergency Order requiring SEPTA to take immediate action to abate the risk of fires resulting in smoke in emergency situations. SEPTA is racing against the clock to complete comprehensive inspections of the entire Silverliner IV fleet (due October 31, 2025) alongside other actions. By coincidence, my visit to Philly was this month and here is a firsthand look at operations in Center City with the limited Silverliner IV fleet, rolling in 2 and 3 car consists during peak commute. They were fun old cars to ride around Philly.
