Kebu - To Jupiter and Back demo #shorts #tbt

Kebu 2023-03-17 | This is how the tune To Jupiter and Back came to be! I wanted to learn how to program my Roland TR-606, so I thought the best way would be to try to compose a song with it. I used the TR-606 for triggering the arpeggio of the Roland Juno 60 as well as the gate of the Arp Axxe. Basically, it sends a pulse every time a high tom or low tom is played. So I muted the internal tom sounds and used the sequencer for triggering the synths instead. Since I can program the triggers rhythmically, the simple down-three-octaves arpeggio becomes an interesting, playable bass sequence instead, where the starting note is different depending on where the arpeggio is.

This demo was recorded live without overdubs, performed in one go straight through. The video was recorded with multiple camera takes afterwards.

Editors - Papillon (cover by Kebu on a Roland Alpha Juno 1) #tbt #shorts

Kebu 2023-03-02 | Throwback Thursday! Back in 2010 the first videos I made had a very minimalistic approach, using mostly only one synth. I really liked the tune "Papillon" by Editors, and got an idea of making a cover of it using only my Roland Alpha Juno. Turned out pretty good, although the Juno is definitely not a synth I would use for making drum sounds (except for timpanis, which can sound surprisingly good on the Juno for an analog synth). I used an overdrive (Boss BD-2) for some sounds, otherwise it was only the Alpha Juno with the help of EQ, compression and delay. Definitely minimalistic!

Kebu 2023-02-23 | Throwback Thursday! Here's the second video I posted on YouTube back in 2010. Here I'm using a Korg Mircro-Preset M-500 and PE-2000 together with a Roland TR-808 drum machine After the song was composed, I noticed that it bears some similarities to Vangelis' song "To the unknown man" (most of the chord changes and the key - C sharp). While "To the unknown man" grows into a quite bombastic tune from its humble beginnings, this tune stays modest until the end, kind of complementing each other. Hence the song title.

Kebu 2023-02-17 | Throwback Thursday! Having been on Youtube for thirteen years now, so I'll be posting these shorts of old videos on Thursdays with some new insight into the videos. This is the one that started it all! I have always been interested in video making, but never done anything, since I didn't have the time or equipment to do so. But in 2010 I got a pocket camera that could also take videos (very high tech at the time), so I decided to give it a go. And I had a blast! And people found the video as well, since I was sure to tag the Yamaha SY-1 synth, which didn't have many videos on YouTube at the time. :) This remains the funkiest song on my YouTube channel! I was really into soul and funk around in the '00s, and this was probably the last thing I did related to soul/funk!

The single presents the winner and runner up of a remix contest that Kebu arranged for his fans. From over 40 remix entries, Kebu selected together with ZYX Music the best remixes for release on this maxi-single. In addition to the remixes, Kebu made a punchier remaster of the original track to make it fit better with the remixes, and also a shorter radio edit.

It quickly became my most popular video on my channel and the most requested tune on my live concerts. Some of you have asked for a timelapse of setting up my keyboard rig, so I made one while I was setting up my rig for my concert at Assembly Winter 2022.

The actual setup time is about two hours. But then there is the load out of the car which takes about half an hour or more, depending on how many persons are helping. And there is always something extra happening (I probably cut away about half an hour of action from the video that was not directly related to the setup, like answering a phone, discussing with the stage manager, going away to park my van etc). So normally I reserve 4 hours for load in and setup, but in the worst case I can do it in 2,5 hours, but then there is no time for troubleshooting if something goes wrong.

Kebu - Roland n/zyme Jam

Kebu 2022-01-26 | I was only planning to try out a few sounds on the new Roland n/zyme wavetable synthesizer for the Fantom, when I suddenly had a complete demo song together. After a few practice takes, here's what it sounds like.

Only n/zyme patches were used and the demo was mixed in the Fantom. I did some small adjustments to each presets, to make them more suitable for the song. Only some multiband compression and limiting was added for mastering. Everything was performed and recorded live using the Fantom's built-in sequencer. Prior to the take I pre-recorded the "Chip stutter" and "Sine mine" sounds, because otherwise the intro would have been double this long, since I would have to wait for the recorded pattern to loop once before recording another pattern.

"Hope" was originally composed for Roland’s product launch event at Abbey Road Studios, where the track was premiered with a live performance. Similar to my earlier releases, the upcoming album – including this track - will consist of a sound universe made only with analog synthesizers and analog drum machines. The synths used on "Hope" are also featured in the music video. In addition to the original version and a radio edit, the single also contains a sparser drum-less version of the song called the “Dream Version”.

Kebu takes on the Fantom 4x4x4 Challenge

The idea of the challenge is to create a song with the Roland Fantom synth in 4 minutes, playing 4 chords only, and using the 4 new Model Expansions (vintage synth emulations of the Roland JX-8P, Juno-106, SH-101 and Jupiter-8).

Somehow I misunderstood the challenge and thought you ALSO had to compose the tune in 4 minutes ("create" = "compose"?). This made the challenge quite difficult! Not to come up with ideas, but to actually have it made in 4 minutes! I didn't succeed until my 14th attempt! Also, I decided to shoot everything in a single take and forced myself to come up with new musical ideas for each take, as I didn't allow myself to start with any ready-made ideas. In the end I decided to choose which synth sounds to use in advance, because otherwise it would have been impossible for me, because I couldn't get past the sound selection in 4 minutes. I'm so picky with my synth sounds. :)

Kebu - Hope (Roland JUPITER-Xm demo live at Abbey Road Studios)

Kebu 2020-08-13 | In August 2019 I was invited to perform at Roland's launch event at Abbey Road Studios in London, with the then top-secret JUPITER-Xm. So I was borrowed a pre-production unit and was planning to use it as part of a keyboard rig setup. Having tested it for a few days, I realized that I could do a whole tune using only one the JUPITER-Xm. So I composed a new tune (still unnamed) that I performed live at Abbey Road Studio 2 on the launch event.

The tune uses two scenes, with the main part of the tune being based around a factory preset by Gattobus that I modified. All the sounds are generated in realtime by the synth's I-Arpeggiator based on my playing. There are no backing tracks or pre-made sequences. I use an iPad running MIDI Designer for controlling some parameters that were not accessible from the front panel of the synth in the beta version of the firmware. The iPad was connected using the built-in Bluetooth of the JUPITER-Xm.

The tune is my own composition called "Just Another Space Odyssey" and is from my first album "To Jupiter and Back". When I composed the tune, I was inspired by Jean Michel Jarre's tune "Arpeggiator", and wanted to do something in the same style.

In this video I perform "Just Another Space Odyssey" with an all-Roland keyboard rig, controlled by the Fantom's sequencer. The first two minutes of the tune is built up in real-time, by recording MIDI notes and looping them back. At 2:20, I start triggering pre-recorded MIDI sequences from the Fantom and play along with them.

Vangelis - Blade Runner (End Titles) - Live by Kebu in Helsinki 2019

Kebu 2019-11-21 | Kebu's all-analog synth arrangement of Vangelis' Blade Runner (End Titles), performed live at Kuudes Linja in Helsinki, 22.5.2019.

Thanks to Mika Knuutila and Jonatan Flinck for operating the cameras, and Sebastian "Baba" Sjöblom for the light show!

Kebu performed the tune using only analog synthesizers, with some parts played live and some parts sequenced. The performance was recorded directly from the mixer to a stereo track, and was later mixed together with the ambience from the room.

Vangelis - Rachels song (performed by Kebu @ Film Music Prague Festival)

Kebu 2019-09-21 | This is a recording of Kebu's performance of "Rachel's Song"at the Film Music Prague Festival, February 3, 2019. The concert was a tribute to the music of Ridley Scott's movies, with Kebu performing three songs from Blade Runner. The song was written by Vangelis for the Blade Runner movie. Eventually it was not used in the movie, but it was later released on the soundtrack album.

Sadly, the main footage from the concert was lost, but the audio recording was recovered. The video was made using a private camcorder recording, courtesy of Tomas Bazika, and photos provided by the Film Music Prague Festival.

The song was performed using only analog synthesizers with the help of a MIDI sequencer. The audio of the performance was recorded to a stereo track from the line out of my mixer and was later mixed together with the audio track from the camcorder for room ambience.

15 minutes before showtime my Poly-61 broke down so I had to quickly program the sound for the main sequence on my backup synth (JD-XA) while the audience was filling the hall. Luckily, I know the JD-XA so well by now and its analog part has sonic similarities to the Poly-61, so I nailed it in five minutes. :D

Kebu performed the tune using only analog synthesizers, either played live or sequenced. The performance was recorded directly from the mixer to a stereo track and a mono tracks for the vocals, and later mixed together with the ambience from the room. A few mistakes have been cut out and replaced with the audio from a rehearsal take.

Equipment used in this song: Roland TR-808, JX8P, Juno 60, Alpha Juno 1&2; Korg Polysix, Poly 61, Mono/Poly, Moog Source, DSI Tetra, Jomox AirBase99, Touched-by-sound DRM1, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Marion Prosynth, Akai MPC2500 (only for MIDI sequencing), M-Audio Trigger Finger, Yamaha 01v96, Lexicon MPX500 & MPX550, as well as a midi patchbay and additional preamps for my mixer.
