Inspired by creators like @ChristineHMcConnell and @rachelmaksy I decided to transform a forgotten corner of my bedroom into a cosy vintage office—blending 1940s charm, Ghibli-inspired touches, and a sprinkle of cottagecore magic ✨.This project was all about working with what I already had (without a never-ending budget!) and repurposing old pieces to create something completely new... that looks old. Cook over a gentle heat and stir constantly until the sugar is dissolved. Boil quickly until a little sets when tested on a cold plate, then pour into hot, dry jars and cover immediately. 🍎 Apple Ginger Recipe:3lbs apples3lbs sugar 6oz of whole gingerWater These can be tailored to however much jam you want to make, just adjust the measurements to the amount that you need.Put the ginger with about 1 1/2 pints water, into a jug, and stand it in a saucepan of boiling water at the side of the stove. Peel and core the apples and cut them into slices, and place in cold water. Strain the water from the ginger and put it in the preserving pan with the sugar, and boil for about ten minutes. Remove the apples slices from the water and put them in the ginger and sugar syrup, and let them boil gently until tender. I made traditional Onion Soup and Irish Soda Bread: The Buy and Try Experiment! Real Vintage Dolls House 2025-06-02 | Welcome back to The Buy and Try Experiment! In today’s episode, I dive into another cosy kitchen adventure featuring two comforting classics: French Onion Soup and Irish Soda Bread.But here's the twist—this all started when I stumbled upon a vintage soup mug at a charity shop, and right there on the front was a full recipe for traditional Onion Soup. Naturally, I had to try it. Paired with some freshly baked Irish Soda Bread, this turned into the ultimate comfort food combo!In this video:I follow the soup recipe straight from the mug (yes, really!)I attempt to bake a no-fuss Irish Soda Bread with simple ingredients for the first time.Share tips, tricks, and a few surprises along the wayTaste test and give you my honest verdictIt may not be soup season but this recipe really hit the spot, and although the bread didn't come out perfectly, we all know that's it's all about the taste 😋. The entire premise of 'buy and try' also helps me to stay open to life's little surprises, rather than always fighting to stay in control. It helps me foster a more "organic" way of living, where I embrace what's right there in front of me, rather than constantly planning my next move...🌻💡 Recipe3 large onions1 ounce butter1 quart white stock1 clove1 bay leaf1 blade mace1 ounce floursalt and pepper1/4 pint of milk Bread 🍞 170g/6oz wholemeal flour170g/6oz plain flour, plus extra for dusting½ tsp salt½ tsp bicarbonate of soda290ml/10fl oz buttermilkPreheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6.Tip the flours, salt and bicarbonate of soda into a large bowl and stir. Make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk, mixing quickly with a large fork to form a soft dough. (Depending upon the absorbency of the flour, you may need to add a little milk if the dough seems too stiff but it should not be too wet or sticky.)Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Form into a round and flatten the dough slightly before placing on a lightly floured baking sheet.Cut a cross on the top and bake for about 30 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack.Soup 🍲 Halve and thinly slice three large onions, then sauteé them in butter for about an hour or two on a low simmer, until soft and caramelized. Next, stir in flour and allow the mixture to cook through.Add “white stock,” or store-bought chicken stock. After letting the onions and stock simmer for a few minutes, add the spices: mace, salt and pepper, a whole clove, and a bay leaf.
