Here's 6 Tips They Don't Tell you about how to be a good Cinematographer
I recently shot my first western film and it was a lot of first for me. The best way to answer a question is to try it out. I recently had a creator ask me if they could use the iphone 16 pro as a secondary or B camera to their go to camera and becasue I hadn't really tested the iphone 16 pro in a controlled setting I thought it would be good to set it up interview style and see if it could be used as a second camera to my Sony fx3. There was a lot I learned and I'm sharing it all with you! Most of it was trying to color the footage to match. There was a lot of color separation with the iPhone but we found a way to make it work.So here's the best way to get cinematic footage out of your iphone 16 pro to match with your camera!

The best way to develop your style is to try filmmaking techniques. The more you learn and try the more you can figure out what your filmmaking style is.
I shot 3 spec commercials and focused on different filmmaking techniques to bring out my style and make some really cool commercials.
We had 15 to 30 minutes to create. The more filmmaking techniques you know the better you will be with time is against you! Thank you @YCImaging and @Chyyanna_Lee for helping me out!

We had 15 minutes to shoot something fun with this model!
@chyylee had some perfume in her car so we decided to make it a perfume spec using the new #sony85mm14gm and the #sony1635f4
All things were stacked against us lol, time, weather (gloomy as freak) and crew. @ycimaging in the back helping us get what we can!
So this is what I captured with what we had!! I forgot so many things I wanted to do, but that’s what happens when time is against you! But it was all fun and good vibes! We had 15 minutes with limited resources to light and frame a quick documentary interview. We didn’t know the location till we got there and didn’t know the gear till we got there. So it was real! lol
Yall know I love shooting interviews so I felt like maybe I got this in the bag! What I love most is that I’ve been in situations just like this where you don’t have all the resouces nor the time to get exactly what you want but you have to still find something great! I think that’s the best part of the process because it grows you. It’s only when you’re put to the test that you can see the growth! No matter the time use cinemtography techniques to create appealing aesthetic interviews that aren’t the normal standard style interviews.
I decided to go with what I know. When given limited time you may have have time to experiment so go with what you know! Focus on finding a good frame, then get your main (key) light perfected and. If you have time left then play around!
We used the #aputure600dpro II and the @infinibars to light.

And you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t have one on set! They work for both cinematography as well as photography!
They have so many purposes to really name and are so versatile! I bought one myself for the simple fact that I’m short and usually need it to stand and sit as I cam op and DP!
But most times you can ask your G&E team for one! But I promise you, these are a MUST HAVE when filming and shooting on set!

You’re usually there for hours testing out your camera and lens combo so it’s always nice when a location is aesthetically pleasing!Cinematic Composition TechniquesBrittney Janae2024-08-15 | Here are some of my favorite composition techniques that I use to create aesthetic videos!
Symmetry - when both sides are balanced or symmetric! People call it the Wes Anderson lol.
Rule of thirds - everyone loves a good rule of thirds! Place your subject left or right third of the frame.
Leading lines - leading lines draw attention back to your subject! Created by things like roads, arrows, building, windows, etc.
Frame within a frame - shoot your subject within any border to give more dimension. Doesn’t have to be a square.Must Have Aesthetic/Cinematic BTS shotsBrittney Janae2024-08-13 | Shooting behind the scenes could be so simple! These are my must have go-to BTS shots! Of course I get a lot more but these you will see at least once in my BTS videos!
They make for really good insert shots, and for more compelling and cinematic shots!
Hopefully these help you all when trying to find fun shots for your BTS videos!
SLATE SHOT: I love to get a good clapped shot. It just signifies we’re here on set about to get the ball rolling.
MONITOR SHOT: I love the depth I usually get when I can get a nice crispy monitor shot. Kinda giving frame within a frame vibes. Always love how these come out!
WIDE SHOT: there’s nothing like a good wide shot or establishing shoot! Sometimes I like to go as far as I can and go extreme because I love getting the BTS lol. But other times I love factoring in camera and team to show the full setup!
RULE OF THIRDS: One of those cinematic techniques that just does it every time! No matter if it’s left or right gotta get this intimate shot with the talent and the camera.
PERSONALITY: always get some fun playful moments! Sometimes takes break from those cool camera shots and just get talent in their element.
OUTRO SHOT: I love to end the video with a fun talk to camera moment! Especially when client wants me to add the logo to the end! Makes it such a personal finish! Like a stamp of approval!
What’s your favorite shot?Best Cinematography Lighting | Nanlite UnboxingBrittney Janae2024-08-12 | I recently got a bulk of nanlite lights and wanted to show you all the new lights in my arsenal. My favorites are the pavoslims because they are so versatile and portable and light! They also have such an easy setup and break down! Literally takes no time! Been using them ever since I got them! I’ll be doing more of a breakdown on my YouTube channel!
Pavoslim 240b - it folds in half for travel and storage and opens up to a 2x2 which is super cool! It’s such a soft light and so beautiful!
Forza 720b - my most powerful light that I own! It’s bi-color and for the power that comes out of this thing it’s pretty lightweight compared to some of my other lights!
FC-60b - this is my go to travel light! It’s so lightweight and I don’t have to worry about plugging it in because I can use the included handle that takes NPF batteries! I use it a lot for a hair light or back light!
Pavoslim 60cl - this light is long, narrow, and thin. It’s such a great hair light! It’s super soft!
FC-120b - just as great as the FC-60b but more powerful!! Get a nice bang for your buck with this duo!
Pavoslim 120b - my FAVORITE light I’ve been using! I had to do a shoot at night and interview two people! This light held up as the key! Hollywood this light and you’re good to go! It’s great!
Forza 500b - super dope spotlight! I use this with my nanlite 19 degree projector. Powerful output! The 500 also comes with the nanlite v mount batteries! These are beefy but last a long time!
Pavobulb 10c - great practical beautiful color accuracy
They all come with nice carry cases and a great amount of accessories!
If you could only use one which would you choose? . . . . . #nanlite #nanliteglobal #nanliteusa #nanliteforza #lighting #cinematiclighting #brittneyjanae

Behind the Scenes has rapidly changed with the help of new camera tools and everyone documetning their daily lives. But for those that really want to get into shooting more elevated BTS and make it more cinematic this video is for you! How to shoot cinematic behind the scenes. It's so much more than just the camera. I've used blackmagics, sonys, super 8's and etc to shoot my BTS. it's really about using the cinematography technicques to tell a story even in your BTS.
Hopefully this video helps anyone trying to grow more in this space! Let me know if you have ANY questions.

Socials. www.instagram.com/brittney.janae www.tiktok.com/brittneyjanaeLearning The Language of Cinematography is Key!Brittney Janae2024-07-19 | More set lingo that you should learn! It’s important to learn these so you’re not on set confused when these terms are thrown out! As the sets you get on become bigger, the more you will hear these being thrown out! Better to learn them now!
1. New Deal - Moving on to a new camera setup for that scene.
2. Room tone - Audio is recording the sound of the environment with no dialog. This is done so you can use the recording to replace any audio that has unwanted noise without hearing the background noise of the room disappear.
3. Eye line- The direction you are required to look in shot. Or make sure you’re not in the actors eyeline.
4. Hot Brick – A fully charged walkie-talkie battery. When starting out you need to supply these to your superiors throughout the day.
5. Picture’s Up: they are about to roll and shoot an actual take.
6. Blocking - This is the process of working out where to position all the cameras and lights based on where the actors are going to be standing and moving throughout a scene.
7. Last looks - This refers to the casts’ hair and makeup. It’s used to indicate that the scene is about to be filmed and that if any final touch-ups are needed, now is the time to do them.
8. MOS is a term used in filmmaking to indicate a shot or scene that was filmed without sound, also known as “mit-out sound”.
9. Flying in - It means that the necessary item or person is on its/their way to set.
10. Wrap - This indicates the end of the filming day.
Have you heard of these?

The first step starts with the motivated light which was our 1200d Pro. From there it added so much to our scene. We then moved to some "practicals" using the 1ft infinibars to add warmth to the scene. Our fill was an Aputure Nova P600c and we put Brady beige shirt over it to also warm it a little. We added some kick lights to also fill the space.
We worked with what we had and I think it came out pretty good!Recreating Sunlight with WindowsBrittney Janae2024-06-17 | Don’t forget to get CREATIVE with your shot choices!!
I always take a super clamp with me wherever I go because you never know when you’re going to want a high angle shot and need to just mount the camera somewhere! I saw the symmetry of the room and was like I need to mount this. Saw the curtain rod and we made it happen lol. Comment Angle for the super clamp I use!
We put the @aputure.lighting 1200d outside and shot it through the window to give a nice recreation of the 🌞.
Shoutout to @de_con for lighting, @bradybessette for adding his special touch lol and @christinadobre for the inspiration! Shoutout to @yungtedmusic for being talent! He’s amazing!
#sonyfx3 #brittneyjanae #contentcreator #aputure #aputurepartner #lightingtipsOn Set Terms To Know #cinematographyBrittney Janae2024-06-12 | Being on set is more than just shooting. It’s learning the terminology for a smooth on set experience! 9 times out of 10 you will hear these terms. The faster you understand them the better it will be!
I realized a lot of people don’t know or haven’t heard of these terms before so I wanted to give you all some terms to know on set! This is pt. 1 of many because it’s so many terms to learn!
1. Hollywooding- normally refers to holding the light via hands or a boom arm to keep moving with talent or be still without the need of C stands. Usually used when there isn’t space or when talent is moving and there’s no room for bigger light setups or lack of time.
2. Back to One/ Reset - going back to shoot the beginning of the scene. Starting the scene over from the top.
3. Martini - the last shot of the day
4. Camera speeds/speeding - cam op says this to let everyone know the camera is rolling.
5. 86 - to scratch or cancel. Something is no longer needed.
6. Tails - instead of marking the shot with the slate at the beginning you’re going to do it after the shot. (Usually the slate is upside down for tails)
7. Striking- means the gaffer or KG is turning a powerful light on. You may not want to look directly into it.
8. 10-1 means you have to use the bathroom. Do the number 1 not the number 2.
9. Points - Get out of the way if you hear points. Usually furniture or lighting or camera is being moved and you’re in the way or could potentially get in the way! Let’s not get hurt!
10. Crossing- crossing has many definitions but one means you’re walking across camera/the frame.
Does this help? Did you know these terms?
More coming soon. #filmmaking #filmmakerslife #cinematography #brittneyjanae @learnfilmmakingHow To CREATE The HOLLYWOOD LookBrittney Janae2024-05-13 | The secret role on how to create the hollywood look is through production designing. MOST IF NOT ALL THINGS START WITH PRODUCTION DESIGN! the colors, mood, tone, characters all of it starts with Production design!
I can honestly say some of my best work was when I was on a shoot with a production designer, art director or set designer. The first time I called myself a DP was when I hired a crew and learned the importance of a TEAM!
Most times people talk about the hollywood look it's always from a standpoint of camera and lighting but that's not the only assets that willl help you get the hollywood look. I would even argue that it's not the most important assets when trying to get the hollywood look. The best way to get the hollywood look and enhance your cinematography and is by working with a Production Designer! I feel like when people watch movies most times the director, cinematographer or editor gets all the praise but we always forget about how much production designing went into play to craft this world that we fell into for 2 hours of wathcing a film or show. Without production design, we're just pointing the cameras and hoping something pretty comes out of it. The best way to grow as a cinematographer is to learn how involved Production desiging should be in crafting our frames.
So in this video I wanted to just shed a little light on the importance of production designing to a cinematographer and how they work hand in hand in creating a visual world.

#cinematography #hollywoodmoviesHow to Become a Better Filmmaker With CINEMATIC MoodboardsBrittney Janae2024-05-06 | Level up your cinematography by creating cinematic moodboards/lookbooks for your projects in Canva! The goal is to become a better filmmaker and the best way to to that is through a process.
Moodboards/lookbooks are pretty much one of the first things that you create when being introduced to a project or wanting to create a project. It allows you to set the tone and feel for what you are going to want to shoot and gives everyone else a part of your project a visual representation of your ideas!
In this video I want to share my simple process in creating a moodboard. It doesn't have to be hard and complicated. Start off simple. #cinematiclookbook #moodboardsHow to make a boring location AESTHETIC | 3 Cinematic TechniquesBrittney Janae2024-05-02 | Learn cinematic techniques that will transform your boring film location into a fun and aesthetic film set.
Interviews specifically are always known to be complicated because most times you have to find a way to create aesthetic talking heads and keep the story appealing to the viewers since A Roll is literally someone telling their story. Sometimes you may not get the best location that is going to add a level of "CINEMATIC" to your project and it may be various reasons why. But you still have to learn how to create something magical with the most mundane film locations and add spice to the interview or overall project.
In this video I wanted to show you all how I turned a boring location with just a cyclorama into visually stunning and aesthetically pleasing set using 3 cinematic techniques that will help level up this transformation. Doesn't have to be for just interviews, these techniques apply to everything! Anytime you see a location that needs fixing, apply these.
There are many things to look for when trying to creatively enhance a set, especially if you don't have a set designer.
00:00 - Intro 00:57 - Texture (Texture always adds to a background or even foreground. It gives a sense of environment and helps place people at a time). 02:27 - Lighting ( lighting helps the story evolve and evokes emotion. ) 06:04 - Color (Color enhances the mood ) 07:55 - ( Post Production enhancements) 8:55 - (What I would have Changed) 10:15 - Outro

#cinematicDirector Viewfinders are fun toys on set!Brittney Janae2024-04-23 | This is a directors viewfinder! Most cinematographers use this on set to pre-determine their frame before moving the camera. Its more accurate than the viewfinder apps because you can use the actual lenses youre using on set to get a more accurate frame.
I’ve always wanted to use a Directors Viewfinder but was glad to have actually checked one out at #nabshow @viltrox.official booth.New Gadgets at #nabshow 2024 | Day 1Brittney Janae2024-04-18 | Day One at my first #nabshow2024! We paired it with the Canon FDs EF mount and used the Sigma MC-21 adapter. We shot open gate at 6k just to test it at it's max! But we all know that blackmagic has beautiful footage! One of my favorite cameras to shoot on in the Blackmagic because of the user friendly menu system, the exposure tools, and the easy grade workflow! It's the best camera to use when crossing into cinema cameras.

A lot of people have been loving my new setup and believe it or not this setup is in a tiny bedroom! It's not about having all the glitz and glam but it's about learning how to create an inviting space with what you have! Talking head videos are the easiest way to create youtube videos. They are also some of the more personal videos as well. If you check out some of your favorite youtubers that shoot in their natural space you will find some similarites in their talking heads, natural lgith, or You are inviting someone into your space more than likely which makes them feel like they are more in and a part of your everyday environment. So why not make that space as inviting as you can! People DO notice.

In this Behind The Scenes Vlog we fly to Atlanta to shoot a PSA for Goldman Sachs with Bernice King (Martin Luther King's daughter) for Women's Month! This vlog was interesting and I didn't put it all in there but we actually rented gear from LA and shipped it to ATL. That came with it's own set of issues that I can get into in a later video but overall it's one of those things that you have a creative and you creative can change completely even when on set! We had some many things we wanted to do but had to scratch due to unforseen things. Nonetheless, Ask all the questions down below!
I love doing these vlogs in between of my cinematic breakdowns because I want you all to just get a feel of how it is being on set and seeing the team work and the camaraderie. To just see what all it takes from a different perspective so hopefully you all like these vlog like videos! Also, you get to see the personalities of the crew members so much more!!
Also, for the people saying you don't need that much equipment for these PSAs. This is a film set. You may be use to the Fx3 and blackmagic but on a bigger shoot even in the union, it requires a lot more than the standards things even if that's more expensive lenses, or a different process. When working with different budgets and clients you work accordingly. Also, I'm really into being intentional and getting the best during production so I don't have to fix it in post. In order to do that, truly invest in the gear that will allow you to do it on set whether it is a Fx3 or a Sony Venice!

I'm a sucker for being the person that travels somewhere and wants to see the place. I want to go to where the people are and learn and adapt as much as I can! I think that inquisitiveness helps you stay creative and allows you to think bigger. It opens up your mind to so much more information than you had before!
It refuels my creativity whenever I travel! So if you ever find yourself in a creative slump, go to where you’ve never been, even if that’s just a random part of your town!

#sonyfx3 #cinematicThe Most Underrated Camera Is... A Nikon!Brittney Janae2024-03-04 | Why so much Nikon hate in the filmmaking community?
UPDATE: Nikon bought RED! Everyone was sleeping on this company and they played chess not checker!! I love it!!
I could argue it’s actually one of the brands that to me has been the most consistent over the years! So many jokes on them to the point where people don’t consider the camera when making choices on their next camera choice. So I decided to take this “Potato” into my own hands and prove everyone wrong!
I Recently I shot a full mini doc using the Nikon Z 8 and wanted to share my thoughts with using this camera primarily for Cinematography. We all know that Nikon is great for photography but it gets a lot of hate in the filmmaking world and I'm never one to follow the crowd so I wanted to use this camera for myself and get my thoughts in order to better help you all make wise decisions and make sure you aren't overlooking great cameras! Here is a Behind The Scenes of how we shot this mini documentary really bare bones, mostly just the camera and lens. We had a monitor and ronin for moving shots but that's about it!
What I found: The colors, the workflow, the images and the lenses all made this such an enjoyable process. The specs alone can be researched but some of my favorite things I liked was the 8k NRaw, Pro Res in Camera, Waveform exposure tool, A1 Autofocus. Nikon has always had the best colors in the game so I knew I didn't have to worry about that! The image is clean and clinical, great for commercial work!.
My final results, if you're looking to a nice hybrid camera with beautiful colors and a clean finish this is definitely a camera to look into! The Nikkor lenses also really were beautiful! Definitely stacks up with the Sony A7rv

So we know Nikon exceeds in the photo category but it was imperative for me to test out what it could do video wise since it has some amazing video specs such as 8k NRaw, Pro-Res in camera, great autofocus and so on. My goal was to show you all what you could do with this camera in a real life situation and since I love telling stories as a DP, I figured why not create a documentary showing what you can create using the Nikon Z 8. If you all have any questions for me let me know. First things that got my attention were the colors, post workflow and how clean the image was coming straight out the camera! #nikon #nikoncreators #z8 #ad

I wanted to create a soothing atmosphere and just show a ritual for me when I am about to get to editing or being at my desk all day or even just taking a break to just be in tune with me during these lofi rainy days.
Try to look at them as days of reset and restoring and not being so upset that you can't be outside. What you can shoot outside, you can also find ways to do inside!

So much was happening at that time in the Black community with our hair. Kids weren't able to graduate because they wore locs, or not being able to play in sports, or being teased and etc. We wanted to make a film where the loc community could be seen and celebrated! Hopefully you all resonate with the beautiful story being told whether you have locs or know someone in the loc community and if it's neither hopefully you can learn to appreciate something unfamiliar. --------------------------- This film explores the importance and connections African Americans have with dreadlocks. Everyone has a story to tell but the commonality we have is the journey of learning more about ourselves through our hair.
IF THESE LOCS COULD TALK speaks to the part of us dedicated to changing narratives that don’t honor our humanity. This is a love letter to us, from us. It captures the rich and complex simplicity of our hair, specifically our locked hair. This subsection of the community has long been overlooked or relegated to a specific part of the Black diaspora. But, Locs are versatile and so are the people that rock them.
This poetic piece speaks alongside them, illustrating the why’s and how’s of their loc journey and what it means to them. Through this we learn more of ourselves as a community and are again reminded of the vastness of our expression.
Our goal is to take you on and audio/visual journey of the beauty that "locs" have set in our culture. It's not just a "hairstyle", it's a creative expression of who we are.

ExposureBrittney Janae2024-02-05 | We all know that lighting and composition help aid in creating beautiful art. But it goes further than that. The best way create aesthetic videos and get beautiful images comes with knowing how to expose properly. No amount of post work can help you fix bad exposure. The best videos and content have good exposure which creates mood which creates story which creates art.
You may have seen or heard of these before but it's important to instill these in your head when you are creating because it can make or break your videos. So here are 4 tools that will help you get the perfect exposure when you are shooting so that your results are beyond what you imagined. A lot of this is subjective and varies based on camera as well as lighting conditions so make sure you continue to do research on your own.
00:00 - Intro 01:19 - False Color (just a note. Middle grey actually is at 42% IRE for Rec 709! Sorry y’all I was corrected.
There are also some honorary tools such as getting a Light meter and the Metered Manual on the camera screen I use this to make sure I don't underexpose and I'm overexposed by at least 1 stop on my Sony Fx3.
Leave the emoji in the comments below.
Let me know if these tools help you in any way. It's all subjective But hopefully I gave a little insight.

Last year I started shooting this 15-30sec postcards and in that I was reminded of going back to the basics of filmmaking. Someone said on my instagram that it's so much to learn when it comes to filmmaking and they didn't know where to start. I say start with the BASICS.
Social media can bombard you with sometimes too much information and so you aren't really starting from the beginning. Reel it back, start with just your camera, settings, lens and the basic art of composition and I promise you, your content will elevate. No matter if it's mundane content or branded content, from tik tok videos to youtube videos.
Composition is the foundation of storytelling and creating compelling visual content, without knowing these techniques you're really just shooting. Anyone can shoot beautiful content. But can it be everlasting, does it tell a story?
Hopefully these techniques help you all in the field as you grow and find space for the art you want to create!

Interviews don't have to look BORING!
Today I'm breaking down a recent documentary I was Director of Photography/Creative Director on. Usually I'm not working in the creative directing space as detailed as I did in this shoot but at some point DP's get to maximize their creativity freely. Interviews don't have to look boring. I'm forever evolving in trying to grow in the interview space and add to just these sit down interviews that you see in documentaries.
This breakdown explains how important workflow(the tools that help you bring your vision to life) is as well as the importance of location, lenses intention, and lighting to turn basic interviews into cinematic shots.
We shot with Arri mini's and Cooke S4 mini lenses.

#howto #Cinematography BreakdownHow to Batch Edit Your Content | Adobe Media EncoderBrittney Janae2023-12-07 | Work smarter not harder!
Here are 5 tips on how to create consistency by batch editing your content in #premierepro
Batch editing your content allows you to have consistency in your output. If you’re only editing and shooting one video a week or so then it’s going to be hard for you to stay consistent!
1. Create a content day or give yourself a couple of hours to try knocking out multiple ideas you have for videos back to back. I try to do about 3 or 4 videos. It also creates consistency in your lighting, composition and all for your videos.
2. In your editing system when creating your sequence edit all the videos on the same timeline. That way if you have branded graphics and etc you can drag and drop onto the other videos. You can also pancake edit if that’s better for you.
3. Use an adjustment layer so you can add your color to it and place it on the top layer above all of your edits. This allows for batch coloring instead of coloring one by one. Saves on time and you can even copy the edit from your previous video so you keep it consistent.
4. Create in and out marks to export each video.
5. Edit in media encoder. This is why I love using premiere. I can export 10 videos without having to be in front of my computer! The goal is to maximize your time! Work smarter not harder.
