Hawaiian whip 1 mauifarrier 2020-01-14 | Hawaiian whip 1. Cutting the leather, making the core. Hawaiian style whips are braided “backward” from the narrow end of the whip up to the handle. Traditionally they were made of rawhide and attached to a wooden handle like an Australian stockwhip. This project is for a simpler all-leather version with no wooden handle. So technically it would be categorized as a snakewhip. The braided backward construction creates a smooth and seamless whip body with no dropped strands and no knot at the fall. It also allows you to build a whip from one tapered piece of leather (or rawhide). All knots end up at the handle end. Therefore they can become part of the handle itself.

Hot water method for dehairing rawhide mauifarrier 2014-01-10 | Here is a clean no-chemical method of hair removal. After fleshing your hide, heat a tub of water to 140-145' f maximum. In the video I used a lower temperature and a longer wait. You may use a combination of hot tap water and boiling water from a kettle. The temperature with the hide added should be safe below 140' f. Stir and wait only a few minutes. If you can't get your temps that high, you'll just have a longer wait until the hair slips.
