MAD Magazine Rare HQ Un-Aired TV Special 1974 Full animated pilot for an unmade ABC network series OutOfMyMind 2024-07-24 | MAD magazine surely needs no introduction. Even in Britain we all knew of MAD magazine although we couldn't actually get our hands on much in the way of genuine source material in the 70s and 80s over here in Gud Ole Blighty. There was however always someone you knew at school who had a battered old copy of MAD magazine, and even though a lot of the American references went straight over our heads, it was still a very funny comic/magazine. It is of course a big part of American 20th Century popular history and, as such, is absolutely iconic to Americans.In 1974 with a circulation in America of over 2 million per monthly issue, MAD magazine made a half hour animated version of their comic after ABC network expressed interest in a full series and asked for a pilot to be made for their channel. Unfortunately for MAD magazine, and potential viewers, no advertisers wanted to be associated at all with a potentially risky product that may cause extreme offense with their edgy humour at any point in time, and this meant that ABC didn't want to continue with the project. Due to this the TV special from 1974 was never aired on any network. At the beginning of the show you can see and hear a voice stating that 'This show is sponsored by..........', followed by seconds of silence. Presumably this is left for after a sponsor had been found and the appropriate words were recorded and dropped into the gap provided. Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972) – Remastered Forgotten Grindhouse Nightmare OutOfMyMind 2026-08-02 | 'Silent Night, Bloody Night' from 1972 is a bleak, gothic proto‑slasher and is one of those films that slipped through the cracks of horror history..... despite being quietly influential. Shot in 1970 and released in 1972, it blends haunted‑house atmosphere with grimy grindhouse violence, long before the slasher boom happened later in the decade.This remastered version by the legendary CANNON restores the murky, candlelit interiors and the eerie winter ambience that were almost lost in decades of degraded public‑domain prints and was the highest quality cut that I could source.Here's some weird shit to do with it:The film’s cast is full of Warhol regulars. Mary Woronov, Ondine, Candy Darling (in some cuts), and other Factory figures were involved.... giving the film a weird avant‑garde undercurrent beneath the gothic horror.It was shot in a real abandoned mansion. The crew used a decaying 19th‑century house in Oyster Bay, New York. Locals genuinely believed it was haunted, and the production lapped it up and tried to capture that atmosphere.The director just stopped making films.. Theodore Gershuny made only a handful of films and then disappeared from the industry, leaving this film as his legacy.The film was edited by a porn director. Jeffrey Konvitz hired a guy who cut adult films to assemble the final version.It accidentally became a Christmas horror pioneer. Long before Black Christmas (1974) or Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984), this film used Christmas Eve as a backdrop for murder — making it one of the earliest “holiday slashers.”The film’s rights were mishandled, leading to decades of awful prints. I fully and wholeheartedly concur. Jittlov allegedly hid over 1,000 subliminal messages in his film, and that is wholly in keeping with the man and his overarching vision.Positive words. Affirmations. THE WITCH – THE RATTLES (1970) | Rare German Promo Film OutOfMyMind 2026-05-21 | This is a rare 1970 promo film for The Witch by the German beat‑psych survivors The Rattles.Originally a Hamburg Star‑Club band, and yes it is the same sweaty wooden stage The Beatles stomped through, although presumably the floorboards were replaced at some point after the British assault had been launched upon the Hamburg stage. By the time that 'The Witch' came out, The Rattles had completely replaced every original member. Same name… totally different band. And this was actually the second time that they had recorded the song — the first version in 1968 failed to set the world on fire.Front and centre on the track — and in this video looking mighty splendiferous and extremely witchy — is the magnificently‑monikered Edna, the band’s briefly‑tenured but utterly magnetic vocalist. She brings a pagan‑esque, proto‑glam energy to proceedings as this wah-wah laden fuzz‑guitar song with fantastic orchestration sweeps across it.The gorgeous video feels halfway between a Hammer Horror moment and a clip from the latest “serious music programme” on late‑night BBC2 in 1970. She strides through an autumnal wood in front of her bandmates, querying spookily whether we have seen “the Witch by her side” over and over, hypnotically.Broadcast on various European music shows in 1970–71, this promo is one of those strange little artefacts that slipped through the cracks of pop history. SIMON SIMON 1970 SILENT COMEDY WITH GROOVY MUSIC Graham Stark John Junkin Norman Rossington + more OutOfMyMind 2026-05-10 | ‘SIMON SIMON’ (1970) — SILENT COMEDY WITH GROOVY MUSICGraham Stark • John Junkin • Norman Rossington • & a ridiculous number of cameosSimon, Simon is one of those glorious British curios from 1970 where everyone involved clearly said, “Oh go on then, I’ll pop in for five seconds and help you out mate.” Directed and written by Graham Stark, this cornucopia of early to mid 70's British comedy silently chunters along on pure visual gags, slapstick chaos, with a soundtrack that at points gets so groovy with Hammond screeches I wondered why it hadn't been sampled before....(mental note to oneself: Sample this music and make a song).....The plot, and that is a very generous term but as long as it's funny I don't care how threadbare the concept is really, is basically John Junkin and Norman Rossington trying to get through a day without the universe collapsing around them. Naturally, the universe refuses to comply. Cue pratfalls, exploding props, malfunctioning machinery, and the kind of deadpan British silliness that shows you 100% that Graham had seen Eric Sykes and Tommy Cooper in 'The Plank'. These 2 films are so similar that they should be on a permanent double bill together.....And the cameos! Wow! Lordy me, the cameos.You have a sip on your cup of tea, and suddenly Michael Caine strolls through the frame for about five seconds. Adjust your bowler hat for a second and again, David Hemmings pops up, looking like he wandered in from a completely different film. Then there’s Peter Sellers, Eric Morecambe, Ernie Wise, Bob Monkhouse, and half the British comedy club of the 1970's turning up just long enough to make you say, “Wait, was that—?” And the answer will be, yes. Yes it was. Especially when you say "Was that Tony Blackburn and Pete Murray???!"Spike Milligan was in this in some capacity but doesn't survive in this cut, and it's the same story with Hattie Jacques too.This film has been edited quite a few times with different versions but this is usually considered the tightest and best edit.It’s basically a 30 minute celebrity conga line disguised as a silent film with a great soundtrack recorded specifically for this film.If you love British 60s/70s comedy oddities, visual gags, and the sheer joy of famous faces doing something daft for the fun of it, you’re in for a treat. And if you don’t enjoy it… well, I would not like to have a cup of tea with you as you are indeed a wretched miscreant who must surely revel in their own miserabilism. And you probably smell too.This is the extended 30‑minute TV version that was shown. Sister George is my own personal favourite of hers but I love them all.Alongside her is Dame Flora Robson, whose career stretches back to the 1930s and includes everything from Hollywood epics to British melodramas. Pairing her with Beryl is genius and the 2 titans combine to make the total equal more than the weighty sum.The film itself is a curious beast (pun totally intended): part psychological horror, part wartime mystery, part character study, and part “what on earth were they thinking? Who the hell sanctioned this???!!”It’s got that unmistakable early‑70s British gloom, the kind where even the daylight looks dark and everybody's interiors and household objects comprised of 2,000.different shades of brown all competing to be the drabbest eyesight in the house.And the cellar scenes…... well, let’s just say that if you’ve ever wondered what happens when repressed trauma, military secrets, and two eccentric sisters collide, this film has the answer.Is this a bizarre British step cousin to Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? Admittedly this film is a product of it's time and some might not find it even watchable!!! Some people dismiss it entirely as total crap but the people who watch this channel aren't here for run of the mill stuff...... You are here for weird crazy stuff and I'd say this fits right in.The plot sees a group of scientists, including Everett and Pamela Stephenson, investigating paranormal activity at a site where a massacre occurred years prior, as seen by us the audience right at the very beginning of the film.The real scene-stealer in this film is the horror icon Vincent Price, playing the 'Sinister Man'. You might wonder what a Hollywood legend was doing in a low-budget British comedy; apparently, he did it as a favour for the director, Ray Cameron, who was a close personal friend of Vincent's. Vincent clearly had a blast sending himself up..... even agreeing to swear on film for the first, (and only), time because he agreed with his friend that it would add to the comedy.It’s a madcap spoof of everything from The Shining to Carrie. Do you like the idea of Mel Brooks making a movie as he runs around Yugoslavia with a film crew of over a thousand people who couldn't understand a word he was saying?If the answer is yes to these seemingly unconnected, and frankly annoying questions, then '12 CHAIRS' (1970) is the film for you!Based on the classic 1928 Soviet satirical novel by Ilf and Petrov, the story follows a former aristocrat (Ron Moody, looking very different from Fagin), a greedy priest (Dom DeLuise), and a charming con artist (Frank Langella) as they race across 1920s Russia to find a hidden stash of family jewels sewn into one of—you guessed it—twelve dining chairs.This was Mel Brooks' second film, sandwiched right between the amazing and legendary 'The Producers' and 'Blazing Saddles', and it's often unfairly overlooked.Mel Brooks even pops up in a cameo as Tikhon, a drunken ex-serf who actually misses the "regular beatings" of the old days. After that all fell through, he offered a role to Gene Wilder, but Gene turned it down because he wanted to play the "handsome" con man instead of the old aristocrat. Mel told him he wasn't handsome enough to play a handsome person!While filming in Yugoslavia, the local extras playing museum guards were supposed to shout "Closing time!" but they couldn't speak English. So when it came to delivering their line they kept shouting "Cloakie Bye!" instead. Mel thought it was so funny that he left it in the final cut!The fantastic theme song, "Hope for the Best, Expect the Worst," was written by Mel himself (after his wife, Anne Bancroft, gave him a nudge). The melody is actually "borrowed" from Johannes Brahms (Hungarian Dance No. 4), which Mel defended by jokingly stating that Brahms probably stole it from a "poor Hungarian peasant" anyway.I’ve managed to find a lovely widescreen print of this for you to enjoy. Haunted House Of Horror 1969 Groovy Horror Film Frankie Avalon, Jill Haworth & Dennis Price OutOfMyMind 2026-01-30 | Made in 1969 by Tigon Films in Britain, this is a Hammer House of Horror style film starring Frankie Avalon and Jill Haworth along with a cast of groovy guys and girls. Dennis Price also stars in a role originally written for Boris Karloff but Boris was too ill to do the film. Richard O'Sullivan is also in this film and there was even a part originally added for David Bowie to play but he was getting famous after Space Oddity was a hit and he didn't end up doing it as he was concentrating on capitalising on his musical career.Speaking of music, there is some awesome background library music and as a huge fan of The Pretty Things, it sounds remarkably like them to my ears and specifically like some of their DeWolfe TV and film background recordings so that's a nice psychedelic bonus although they aren't credited so we will never know definitively but I tthink it's them.....After getting bored at a very 1969 style party, the group of young people decide to go to a supposed haunted house that they used to play in as children. It's very colourful and completely 1967ish and it reminds me in style of the television series that The Monkees made starting in the same year. Again, as The Monkees did in their awesome film Head, this film is similar as it moves from genre to genre with parts being like a Western and then other parts being like a spy film in numerous 'skits'.This film never reaches the giddy heights of Head but is well worth a watch if you like a bit of Hollywood 1967 kitsch! It also has some great music in it, obviously done by Sonny and Cher and mainly written by Sonny Bono. UFO theme tune with promo shot of lady BUT I slow it down until it becomes a Horror movie score!!! OutOfMyMind 2025-12-29 | One of my favourite TV shows is UFO from 1970 which was created by the legendary Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. It was their first live action show after many international hits such as Thunderbirds, Fireball XL5, Captain Scarlett, Joe 90 etc. I adore the costumes and look of it with the cars also being very groovy. They must have had a deal with a car showroom because they do have a lot of very nice cars in the show too but the music is absolutely incredible, ranking up with the best of session men library film and TV music, which as everybody knows is THE best groovy music from people such as KPM and DeWolfe. The music is so funky and groovy and heavily reliant on that giant of instruments, the mighty Hammond Organ.This is a short film made from some promo material with an actress from the show with one of the cars in the show.I found out that if I slowed down the theme tune being played over it, it got very laid back and if I slowed it down further it became a Horror movie them song!!!This video has the song playing at normal speed, then I successively slowed it down until at it's slowest it is quite terrifying and like a very scary movie theme! This was intended to be his next sexploitation film but he re-wrote it and made it as a 70's psychological horror film with a light dose of heaving bosom instead.It centres around Maya, who is elected to be the Queen of a Satanic cult. After she is chosen she starts to have bizarre dreams which start to make her mind disintegrate.The soundtrack is seriously heavy on the synthesiser bleeps and blips and you'll probably adore it or hate it!Christa Helm appears in this film as a character named 'The Girl'. It's more of a free form tune to let them all stretch out and improvise round this killer riff as they had very little rehearsal before playing live.
