This film explores the intersection of nature and physics through Jørgen’s journey into wave energy. His fascination began not with the water itself, but with the universal behaviour of oscillating systems. Whether through light, sound, or the swell of the sea, the movement of waves represents a constant transfer of energy that Jørgen felt driven to understand and eventually harness.
At the heart of his work is the WaveSpring mechanism. In the world of renewable energy, point absorbers are often too small to respond effectively to the power of the ocean. By using a concept known as a negative spring, Jørgen developed a way for these devices to behave as if they were far larger and heavier. It is a transformation he likens to a violin taking on the resonance of a double bass, allowing for high energy conversion with significantly less material.
The title, Negative Spring, refers to a mechanical concept Jørgen encountered during his PhD studies. At the time, academic texts suggested that such a mechanism was an impossibility in the physical world. Through a process of relaxation and looking at the problem from fresh mathematical perspectives, Jørgen realised that the "impossible" could actually be engineered into a key technology for the future of the planet.
Filmed in Jørgen’s home village, this piece is a look at the quiet moments of reflection that lead to scientific breakthroughs. The WaveSpring mechanism was first invented at NTNU in 2012 and has since been developed into a core component of CorPower Ocean’s technology.

Tuned State: Optimised for regular seas, amplifying a 1-metre wave into 3 metres of motion to maximise power capture.
Detuned State: Provides storm protection by making the buoy 'transparent' to large waves, similar to how wind turbines pitch their blades in high winds.
By deploying these units in large, interconnected arrays, we can create wave energy farms capable of generating hundreds of megawatts. This scalable approach provides enough clean power to support hundreds of thousands of homes, offering a consistent and predictable addition to the global renewable energy mix.

The three-year Horizon 2020 funded WaveBoost project has drawn to a close with a step change improvement achieved to the reliability and performance of wave energy technology.
Led by CorPower Ocean, the WaveBoost consortium designed and developed an advanced Power Take Off (PTO) system allowing wave energy converters (WECs) to operate safer and more reliably in harsh ocean conditions while increasing annual electricity production by 27%.
On the performance side, new dynamic seals were design and tested resulting in 70% improvement in friction, while flow losses have been reduced by up to 90% compared to previous product.
The improvements enabled the Levelised cost of energy (LCoE) to drop by 18-29%, with operational expenditure expected to decrease by up to 29%.
The learnings from the WaveBoost project will be carried forward as CorPower Ocean move towards the manufacturing, dry testing and deployment of their next full scale C4 WEC.
The WaveBoost project consortium comprised of sector leaders from Sweden, Portugal and the UK including CorPower Ocean (project lead), Arcos Hydraulik, the Research Institute of Sweden (RISE), EDP Innovação, WavEC Offshore Renewables, The University of Edinburgh, and the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).Breakthrough results in wave energy, Orkney 2018CorPower Ocean2018-10-25 | After 18 months of combined dry and ocean testing of the C3 Wave Energy Converter (WEC), CorPower and project partners have taken important steps towards proving commercial viability of wave energy. By verifying the ability to solve the two major challenges for wave energy, storm survivability combined with significant power production, a major demonstration milestone has been completed.
- A novel storm protection mode that makes the device largely transparent to incoming waves was proven effective in minimizing motion and loads, providing robust operation in storm conditions. This new function for WECs can be compared to wind turbines that pitch the blades to minimize storm loading, a function found in essentially all commercial wind turbines of today.
- A novel phase control technology called WaveSpring, that delivered the projected amplification of motion and power capture performance in operational sea states, enabling a threefold increase in average power capture for a given buoy size. The measured power production with C3 in the ocean was consistent with the expectations from simulation models and prior dry testing with simulated waves.
As part of the project, the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) issued a “Performance Statement” verifying measured performance.
