It is a precursor mission to sending humans back to the Moon - permanently, this time! (as in rotating crews like the ISS) It's also carrying a very interesting "secondary" mission called LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite), which will help answer the question "Is there water on the Moon?", which has the potential to be an invaluable resource for future lunar missions.
