I wanted to share an insight with some frequently asked questions about most of my color chart packs. This especially applies to the Motion Picture Color Charts Mega Pack, the Photo Stocks Color Charts Mega Pack and also the Kodak Eastman EXR Pack! But there are also some general tips & tricks + some info in there on how to work with film scans. An extensive tutorial on how to work with film scans and also a comparison between the Blackmagic Cintel Scanner and the Arriscanner is in the works too! Also here's the link to the mentioned Film Profile Journey if you aren't aware of it yet!

With this one you're able to apply, mix and combine the hue, saturation & luminance of different film profile LUTs. There are negative emulations, print emulations and some synthetic looks included. And the best thing of all? They are all adapted to either work within DaVinci Intermediate/DaVinci Wide Gamut, ACEScct or ARRI Log-C3/AWG3. So no matter what your preferred color managed workflow is - you're all set up!
You'll find more detailed info about the included looks and how they came together within the info box at the product in the shop. In this video you'll find some info about how to install this pack, some color management basics and and insight into the tools + best practices on how to use them. There's a look designing tutorial where I'll use this new tool coming soon too!

Of course you can also apply these techniques to any other look or LUT that is working scene referred. So it's nothing specific for this look pack.
In the beginning I'm showing how to install them and some color management basics, so you're all set up. Also just take this as input and not a 1:1 instruction on how to work. I'd encourage you to play around and try things out to see what works best for you. You could also use one of the look LUTs at the very beginning or in the middle of your node tree. Try a lot of stuff out and see what works best for you personally! I hope you're enjoying this look pack and stay tuned for regular updates!

Some month ago the team at Video Village released a new plugin called "Filmbox". I instantly downloaded it, as I really love Scatter (find my review about it here) and Lattice which are products from them too. After some tests and playing around with it, I also used it for two music promos (more on that later on). Long story short: generally speaking I really like their approach and how this plugin is built. Their halation model is probably the best I've seen implemented in a plugin yet. I love that they are having different presets for 35mm, 16mm, and so on. And I believe that they also built some sort of MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) into the halation presets too and this produces really amazing and lovely results. Simply put this means, that the high frequencies and/or the parts of the image where the halation occurs are getting a bit of a blur too. Awesome!
Furthermore I really like that everything can be done in a scene referred working space and that they also implemented DaVinciWideGamut (DWG) already. Plus you can choose which of their effects you want to have and which not (more on that in the video part of the tutorial). The only thing that I do not like too much is the fact that you have to use a ODT from them if you're working within ACEScct and that you can't use a standard ACES ODT. This is a bit of a problem if you have a project in ACES and you're collaborating with others and/or VFX houses if you ask me (as it defeats the standardized approach of ACES, which was the intend of developing ACES in the first place). Also I feel like their grain emulation oftentimes feels a bit overlayed so it doesn't sit perfectly in the image like with other plugins namely Dehancer or Grainlab.
All in all I think it's a great tool to have in your arsenal and can give you great results real quick. Especially for music promos where time is always a huge factor. The price may is a bit steep for some of you, but I feel that it is totally worth it, as profiling film and coding all of this together definitely is hard work. Plus you really get a lot of features like Halation, Grain, Dust, all 4 Kodak Vision3 film stock profiles, Print ODTs, Gate Weave, and lots of input & output transforms. And last but not least it will also work in HDR so it's future proof too!
Below the tutorial video you'll see some stills that I've graded with the help of this plugin and the technique I showed you in the tutorial.
Also you'll find a written part accompanying this tutorial on the website with more detailed infos to this workflow (and for example how you can adapt the input of LUTs for your preferred workflow)
Most of you guys probably heard of ACES(cct) and RCM2.0/DaVinciWideGamut before and/or worked in one of those scene referred color managed workflows. While both of these workflows offers some great advantages, especially if you're working on projects where you need lots of different deliverables (different flavors of HDR deliverables, SDR, Cinema,..), lot's of people (according to my research) do not really like these workflows, because of the baked-in color transforms and/or how the tools behave and sometimes are even restricted for these workflows (for example: you can't use layer blending modes in ACES). If you didn't heard of ACES yet or still want to learn about it (highly recommend it), check out my ACES course here (scroll a bit down on the site and you'll find it). And some tutorials for RCM2.0 are coming soon too! (Continue reading at: www.demystify-color.com/all)
After doing quite a lot of tests I used Dehancer on some of my projects too. Here I'll show you a short overview of the plugin and it's capabilities. It's quite impressive how many features they implemented to get a real film emulation. Especially at this price point. In my opinion it's probably the best plugin price-performance-wise at the time being. Furthermore you'll get 10% off with code: DEMYSTIFY10. Also they do not just have film profiles as most of the competitors but customizable Halation, Gate Weave, Grain, etc. too.

In December 2020 I discovered Scatter and after a bit of thinking I decided to give it a shot and bought a perpetual license. It was a tough choice, because it's not too cheap and 2020 wasn't a good year money wise. Nevertheless I was too excited to not buy it. And I can tell you - I regret nothing. First I've been a bit sceptical if it really gives you the same effect as a on camera black pro-mist for example, but as the company (Video Village) built Lattice too (and I really love this piece of software!) I trusted them. And the results are outstanding. We also quickly compared a real black pro-mist against the preset in their plugin. Shot on a RED Helium by Thomas Dunzendorfer. It was not a super scientific test and I even don't know if every filter brand behaves the same. Nevertheless I was excited to compare the out of the box result. You'll see the details in the video. You can download the RED footage here if you want to see and compare it. All the examples shots are below the video. Open them in a new tab and switch between them to compare more closely or download and even zoom in :-)
Furthermore I have to say they wrote a really great and comprehensive handbook for the plugin. Nice bonus!
And last but not least - Greg from Video Village was kind enough to provide you all with a 15% discount on Scatter! Just head into the Members Discount section to get all the info you need.

*Quick spoiler & note: I think you can match the look pretty much 1:1 with the help of the built in tools from Resolve. Didn't mention this in the video, because I just wanted to test the out of the box behavior. But just wanted to add this too, because I really do not want to badmouth this amazing plugin :-)
