Start Planning Next Years Christmas Now - German Christmas Markets Itchy Feet on the Cheap 2023-01-18 | This year my family and I spent Christmas in Germany touring around the various Christmas markets. We went to Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Dresden, and Braunschweig. It was the best of times, it was the wurst of times... The 'wurst' as in the German word for sausage. Christmas markets in Germany are packed with amazing food and drink. We ate so many sausages. I had the best candied almonds, the best potato patties, and the best pork chop sandwich I've ever had. The alcoholic drinks are also amazing. They come served in a customized Christmas market cup, which you must pay a deposit on - a deposit that you'll happily not get back in order to keep the cup as a souvenir. We drank hot apple cider, glühwein (mulled wine), and even glühbier (beer aged with cherry juice). New Years Eve Munich, Germany (a VERY sloppy night) Itchy Feet on the Cheap 2023-01-10 | New Years Eve in Munich, Germany. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. After drinking in beer gardens across the city and enjoying some traditional German spirits (a fancy way of saying we did shots of Jager), I made it to Marienplatz, the main square in Munich. Live Martial Arts Event in Phnom Penh, Cambodia Itchy Feet on the Cheap 2022-11-25 | Martial arts has a long history in Cambodia. Kun Khmer is Cambodian kickboxing. Images of it are carved into Angkor Wat. There are several gyms that train MMA, kickboxing, and boxing in Phnom Penh. Let's get them all together and have some fights!Phnom Penh Interclub Martial Arts (facebook.com/phnompenhinterclub) has put on 3 events this year in Phnom Penh. They include matches in boxing and Khmer kickboxing. Down a dark side street in Toul Tompoung, you'll find the Cambodian Top Team gym where the latest event took place. 14 warriors battled it out. The crowd was rowdy, but respectful. Beers were cold and only a dollar. The Place You Want To Escape To... Kampot, Cambodia Itchy Feet on the Cheap 2022-11-18 | Kampot is a river town in Cambodia. It's a peaceful and relaxing place just a few hours from the often hectic Phnom Penh. Many people living in the capital escape the city to relax in Kampot. We rented a riverside bungalow and spent 5 days kayaking the river, playing petanque and other games, eating delicious food including the local delicacy Teuk M’hech. This Former Levis Factory is Now Shaping Cambodias Future Itchy Feet on the Cheap 2022-10-21 | The Factory is a one-of-a-kind place in Cambodia. It's a former garment factory repurposed to house the country’s largest co-working space with shops, restaurants, cafes, and parks on site. There is also a condo, called Urban Village, with a second building currently being built. Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City by Bus During Pchum Ben Itchy Feet on the Cheap 2022-09-30 | We are taking a bus to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from Phnom Penh, Cambodia over the busiest travel holiday in Cambodia. It's Pchum Benh - a holiday where many people travel to both their home province and tourist destinations in Cambodia. The government actually provides free buses to Cambodians. We decided to spend the holiday in Saigon, but first we have to get there. While there are short direct flights from Phnom Penh, we opted for a bus ride with Giant Ibis. Then we'll take a ferry across the river to the Wang Lang area and the Siriraj Medical Museum. The medical museum is probably the most disturbing museum I've ever been to. It's often called the "death museum". It's actually a museum created for the medical students of the Siriraj med school, with examples of various deadly illnesses, birth defects, accidents, and more - most of which are featured on dead babies that have been preserved in formaldehyde. After getting some street food lunch, I am going to a fortune-teller in Kandal Market, Phnom Penh. Almost every market has fortune telling, and I've always been curious about it. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to find a fortune teller that can speak English, and it's even more difficult for me to learn Khmer (as seen in this video). Robin to the rescue! People are excited about Cambodias Craft Beer Scene Itchy Feet on the Cheap 2022-05-14 | I love craft beer. When I first moved to Cambodia, one of the first things I did was look up the craft beer scene in Phnom Penh. I was excited to try all the local microbreweries, and I have not been disappointed. There are around 15 microbreweries in Cambodia. It's not a lot, but it's enough to keep me satisfied, and the industry is still growing. One of my favourite places to get a pint is Noisy Chili - the bar/taproom for Riel Brewing. I was very excited to sit down with 2 of the owners and talk about their beer and brewing process. They were one of the earliest microbrewers in Cambodia, and despite some struggles, they are now one of the most successful. I also go to Craft, a new bar on Phnom Penh's Palace Lane that specializes in, you guessed it, craft beer. The owner is also a co-owner of Fuzzy Logic Brewing Co. - another amazing microbrewery in both Vietnam and Cambodia. His passion for beer shines through as he discusses craft beer in Cambodia, who is making the best beers, and future craft beer events that he is organizing.All that, plus I drink a lot of beer. The Many Faces of Phnom Penh, Cambodia Itchy Feet on the Cheap 2022-05-07 | Phnom Penh, Cambodia is a unique place full of surprises. In the tourist world, it's a place where travelers go to feel like there aren't any rules. One of the hubs for that is the girly bar streets by the riverside. There are 2 streets that are filled with hostess bars, where you can sit and have drinks with young Khmer women. On the other hand, construction is booming in the city. If all goes according to plan, Phnom Penh will soon be the home to the tallest twin towers in the world. Internationally renowned brands can be found in the Aeon Mall, the biggest shopping center in Cambodia. The Small Cambodian City Where All the Expats Live - Kampot Itchy Feet on the Cheap 2022-04-28 | We are visiting Kampot, Cambodia - a popular area for foreign and local tourists, as well as expats living in Cambodia. It's a sleepy river town with a lot of surprises. Above all else, Kampot is known for it's food. Kampot pepper is considered some of the best pepper in the world, with its red, black, green, and white varieties. We visit La Plantation and learn all about the pepper growing process. We also eat a ton of food - from incredible breakfast sandwiches to "the best burger in Cambodia". The riverside is the place to be when in Kampot. There are many riverside resorts that are perfect for relaxation and a cold beer. Khmer New Year 2022 - A Tale of 2 Cities Itchy Feet on the Cheap 2022-04-18 | Khmer New Year is the biggest holiday in Cambodia. For 3 days people celebrate - going to temples, hanging out with family, eating, playing games, and even having water fights.In Phnom Penh, the celebration is much different than Siem Reap. While the capital is fairly quiet and laid back, Siem Reap is a party with concerts, dancing, and huge water fights.In Phnom Penh most of the action is taking place at Wat Phnom, the city's most important Buddhist temple. In Siem Reap, it's all happening around the bars and restaurants on Pub Street.In Phnom Penh, people weren't allowed to have water fights this year. In Siem Reap, there wasn't a dry head in the house. Lucky for you (and me), I've got a man in Angkor Town.
