A skinny font is difficult to read because it’s so small and thin, and when you add a border onto that, it takes away from the text even more. Or even if you don’t have a border around it, right? So you want to make sure there’s a little bit of fat in it so that people are going to be able to see it very well. I have pretty decent eyesight but I found that even I can’t read skinny fonts very well. So make sure you choose something with a little bit of girth to it. You Wont Believe the Struggle of Lip Reading for Deaf People! Rikki Poynter 2024-09-27 | Deaf people will ask hearing people to meet halfway by typing on the phone, or writing on a piece of paper. Hearing people will keep on talking despite the requests of deaf people and then get mad when we don’t understand them and then the interaction takes two times as long as it could've been, and more frustrating. Lip reading is not a guarantee, and takes much more energy than a hearing person having a conversation with their peers. It takes more effort than learning sign language. It’s a little over two hours or almost two hours, and nothing extravagant really happened until like the last 15 minutes. So while the slow burn parts are still good, it still got me intrigued, I do wish there was more cat and mouse in this. I really wanted to just see more of that. cochlear implants are not miracle workers for deaf people Rikki Poynter 2024-08-19 | Hearing people are always under the impression that hearing aids and cochlear implants are miracle cures, that they fix deaf people and their hearing. This is false. These are assistive devices that can help people hear more, but it doesn’t guarantee that we understand more. Not only that, but not everyone qualifies for either device or both. Also, digitized hearing is not the same as regular hearing, and it doesn’t guarantee it’ll even work. These devices and procedures really are just a game of chance! There are deaf people with hearing aids and cochlear implants that are thriving with just spoken language, or still need and are thriving with both spoken and signed language, or simply just signed language. Getting creators to caption their content has been a years long mission with back and forth success and one thing is certain: when providing the service becomes more difficult or at a price, people become less likely to start captioning at all or continuing to do so. Im Deaf and I Didnt Have a 504 or IEP Growing up in School Rikki Poynter 2024-06-19 | Watching @ChrissyMarshall_ video about IEPs and 504s had me emotional because I never had one growing up. I didn’t have access in school and life in general, really. My parents didn’t advocate for me. The audiologists didn’t do much after we couldn’t or didn’t get hearing aids at the time. No teacher, counselor, principal had ever talked to me about assistance from the school system or government. So to find out not even a decade ago about IEP and 504 for the first time was mind blowing for me. It’s one of the reasons why I do what I do, so nobody else has to go through what I did. (Rikki) Hey. So I also grew up mainstreamed, and I was just thinking about how I never had a 504 or an IEP. I- I never even knew what that was until I went back to my high school. And I wanted to do some public speaking at a few, you know, schools in the area. And now there’s a new principal there. Never met him before. So I was, I was talking to him. We’re having a conversation. You know, my being deaf and disabled, whatever. And he asked me. He’s like, “Oh, so you had an IEP or a 504 whatever, right?” And I was like, “What’s that?” And his mind was just blown. He was so surprised to know that I’d never had one. Never heard of one. He was like, “No, no teacher has told you about that?” No. I can only imagine how my school life would have been if I had known.

moving into my first one bedroom apartment at 33 years old Rikki Poynter 2024-06-03 | It’s a scary risk and investment, and more expensive, but the 370sqft studio was no longer suiting me and my needs, and my cats’. Now I am moving into a 475sqft one bedroom. I’m really hoping that now that I no longer will have my bed two inches away from my work space, a setup I had in my past life, I will no longer be feeling like I’m hiding in my room still trying to have peace and quiet away from abusers. That’s what it started to feel like again these recent months and it wasn’t doing my mental health any good. I’m excited to have a separate space for work, living, and sleeping. To have a couch. To have a TV. I don’t have any furniture except for my bed, desk, and some bookshelves so it’s going to be a long few months working my butt off (literally, thanks OF lawl) to earn money to get that stuff. But also, my birthday is in July, so… Here’s to a new chapter again, and one that will hopefully improve my work again! first mothers day since leaving abusive mother Rikki Poynter 2024-05-13 | Growing up with physical, emotional, verbal, and mental abuse by my mother for 30 years, I never was a fan of Mother’s Day. I’d get jealous seeing everyone happily with their mothers, posting happy pictures. Etc. (Granted, of course, I know anything can happen behind closed doors and that pictures aren’t always what they seem.) I hated how it seemed like I had to pretend everything was okay especially on Mother’s Day and play into this role both online and offline. I hated knowing that there’s always people that will think I’m a terrible person because “well, it’s your mother!” even though I think that excuse is ridiculous. I hated knowing that I would never get that happy relationship with my mother, and I would always be awkward around other people’s mothers. (Not rude, just awkward.)This is my first Mother’s Day being on my own without all of that. In recent years, I never said Happy Mother’s Day. And today, I look at my phone and think, “Do I want to do that now? She’s been doing this strong attempt at being in my good graces since we no longer see each other and there’s a text every once in a while in case some information is needed, but other than that…” I mean, I know I don’t want to send anything. It wouldn’t be genuine if I did. But as it turns out, the guilt in the back of your mind doesn’t simply go away so easily! (well, maybe it does for some. But apparently not for me.) And unfortunately, I still get sad seeing the happy posts that are all on Facebook, Instagram, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for them. A little bitter and jealous, sure, I’ll admit to that. Hey, does anybody wanna be my mother today? spotify is putting their lyrics behind a paywall Rikki Poynter 2024-05-11 | I recently stopped being a premium Spotify user in order to save some money. Having the free version of Spotify comes with a lot of limits but now to add a limit on lyrics to that? That is a ridiculous move on their part. Lyrics are an accessibility tool for everyone: deaf and hard of hearing people, people with ADHD, auditory processing disorder, even non-disabled people. There is no good reason to have them be paid for.
