Operational Update August 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-08-25 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update August 2023We begin in Poland, where paratroopers from Belgium, Czechia, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and the United Kingdom participated in Jump Week, an annual international training exercise hosted by the Polish Sixth Airborne Brigade. The international soldiers participated in more than four hundred jumps from fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Jump week is meant to integrate airborne soldiers from different NATO countries, allowing them to learn about each other’s techniques, equipment, and experiences. Meanwhile two changes of command have recently taken place within JFC Brunssum’s vigilance area. Slovakian Brigadier General Tibor Králik assumed command of Multinational Division Centre, in HungaryAnd, in Latvia, Danish Major General Jette Albinus took command of Multinational Division North. Finally, German fighter jets travelled to Iceland to participate in Exercise Rapid Viking. Six Eurofighters conducted up to eight training sorties each day to work with the Icelandic Coast Guard and other regional Allies in the high north. Operational Update July Wrap Up 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-07-28 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update July Wrap Up 2023This week we begin in Lithuania, where NATO leaders gathered for the 2023 Vilnius Summit. The summit focused on strengthening the transatlantic bond, deterrence and defence in response to Russian aggression, increases in national defence spending, and long-term support for Ukraine. JFC Brunssum was responsible for all security measures supporting the Vilnius Summit, ensuring the safety of senior representatives from all 31 NATO nations.Meanwhile in the Netherlands, 38 JFC Brunssum service members took part in the Nijmegen Four Day Marches, also known as the Walk of the World. The team marched 40 kilometres a day, wearing military uniforms and carrying a rucksack weighing at least 10 kilograms. Along the way, thousands of spectators came out to support. Originally a military training event in 1909, today the Four Days Marches represent the largest walking event in the world. Also in the Netherlands, Chief of Finnish Defence Command, Lieutenant General Vesa Virtanen, visited JFC Brunssum on 26th July, to discuss how decisions made at the Vilnius Summit will affect cooperation between Finland and JFC Brunssum. He was welcomed by Lieutenant General Krzysztof Król, JFC Brunssum Chief of Staff. Operational Update July 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-07-06 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update July 2023This week, we look to Lithuania, where Exercise Griffin Storm was conducted from the 21st of June until the 6th of July. Some 1.200 troops with about 750 vehicles from the German 41st Armoured Infantry Brigade deployed by land, sea, and air. In the exercise, the German troops practiced reinforcing the multinational battlegroup to brigade level. The aim is to enhance the interoperability among the Armed Forces of the two NATO countries and improve rapid deployment procedures – demonstrating the determination and capability of NATO to deter any aggression towards the Alliance’s Eastern Flank.Meanwhile, here at home in the Netherlands, on the 23rd of June, we celebrated our 70th anniversary. JFCBS Celebrates its 70th Anniversary NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-06-23 | On 23 June 2023, a military ceremony took place at Camp Hendrik to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Headquarters Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFC Brunssum).In the ceremony, General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, Commander JFCBS, welcomed both civilian and military dignitaries, as well as current and former members of the Headquarters, together with their families. Operational Update June Wrap Up 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-06-22 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update June Wrap Up 2023This week, aircraft from 24 Allies and Partner Nation Sweden took part in the largest air exercise in NATO history. Air Defender 23 is a multinational exercise organised by Germany, which brought together 10,000 personnel and 250 aircraft of 23 different types from across the Alliance. The exercise ran from the 12th to the 23rd of June with aircraft flying over 200 sorties a day from airbases in Germany to practice the defence of NATO’s airspace.Meanwhile, at sea in the Baltic, NATO and Partner navies concluded their participation in Exercise BALTOPS 23. Now in its 52nd year, the annual exercise ran from the 4th to the 16th of June, starting in Tallinn, Estonia and finishing in Kiel, Germany. Led by the US Sixth Fleet and Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO, the exercise involved fifty ships, more than forty-five aircraft and 6,000 personnel drawn from twenty nations, including Partner Nation Sweden, and NATO’s newest member, Finland.Finally, in Lithuania, German troops have arrived to take part in an exercise that will help develop NATO’s New Force Model concept. Exercise Griffin Storm is a deployment of the German ‘enhanced Vigilance Activities’ Brigade, a high-readiness brigade intended to deploy at short notice for the defence of Lithuania. Operational Update June 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-06-09 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update June 2023This week we start with the 52nd iteration of BALTOPS, NATO’s premier maritime-focused exercise in the Baltic Region. Twenty nations, 50 ships, more than 45 aircraft, and 6,000 personnel will participate in the exercise that started on June 4th. Since 1972, BALTOPS has taken place annually to demonstrate NATO's commitment to preserving regional peace and security by exercising a team of international forces that can rapidly respond in a time of crisis.And unmatched strength in unity in the Arctic, Finnish F/A-18s, U.S. F-15’s and Swedish JAS 39 Gripens took to the skies together during the joint training exercise ARCTIC CHALLENGE. Approximately 3,000 soldiers and 150 aircraft from 14 different nations took part in the exercise from May 29th to June 9th. This year’s exercise is the sixth of its kind which Finland, Norway, and Sweden have hosted together.And wrapping up here at home in the Netherlands. A Landmark Visit: Finnish Chief of Defence Strengthens NATO Bonds at JFCBS 🇫🇮 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-06-05 | 🇫🇮 Marking the first visit of a Finnish representative to Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFC Brunssum) since the country officially joined NATO on April 4, General Timo Kivinen, the Chief of Defence of Finland, paid his first official visit to JFC Brunssum on Monday, 5th June, 2023. General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, Commander of JFC Brunssum, warmly welcomed the Finnish representative, personally congratulating General Kivinen for Finland’s transition from NATO partner to full Ally.The visit ended with an emotional farewell. Operational Update May Wrap Up 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-05-30 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update May Wrap Up 2023This week, we start in Poland, where Exercise Griffin Shock was conducted from the 8th to the 26th of May, with some 3,000 troops from five NATO nations. Griffin Shock is a combined US and NATO training event that involves the NATO Multinational Battlegroup Poland and elements from the United States Army Fifth Corps. The purpose of the exercise was to show what the expansion from a NATO Battlegroup into a capable Forward Land Forces Brigade might look like.In the Atlantic, Allied navies conducted Exercise Formidable Shield,Europe’s largest and most complex maritime integrated air and missile defence exercise. For two weeks in May, over 20 surface ships, 35 aircraft, and ground-based units from 13 NATO Allied and partner nations with more than 4,000 personnel worked together in a variety of scenarios to enhance their individual and collective missile defence capabilities.And finally, in preparation for the September Invictus Games NATO Day in Germany, JFC Brunssum hosted Edwin de Wolf, Dutch Veteran Master Sergeant and Team Manager of the Dutch Invictus Team. Operational Update May 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-05-12 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update May 2023This week we are in Sweden, where from the 24th of April to the 11th of May, personnel from 14 nations took part in Exercise AURORA 23. The exercise involved over 26,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen and national guardsmen – drawn mostly from NATO countries and the Swedish Armed Forces – making it the largest exercise to take place in Sweden for over twenty-five years.In the Czech Republic, the Czech Army has been training Ukrainian soldiers in mechanised infantry operations. The Ukrainian soldiers received an intensive four-week training package, designed to prepare them for active duty, defending their homeland against Russia’s brutal war."I’m a soldier and they are our brothers in need, so we try to do as much as possible," said Lieutenant Colonel Michal Voltr, CZE Army – Commander, 72nd Mech. Bn.And finally, in the Netherlands, JFC Brunssum hosted a visit of the Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Ms Kajsa Ollongren. Operational Update April 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-04-21 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update April 2023This week we start at Headquarters Multinational Division Centre, in Székesfehérvár, Hungary. In a ceremony on March 31, NATO declared the headquarters’ Initial Operating Capability, certifying it ready to command troops in defence of the Alliance as NATO’s land headquarters for Central Europe. At the ceremony, the Commander of JFC Brunssum General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, said MND-Centre is now an established part of the NATO team.NATO countries are continuing to train Ukrainian soldiers to operate donated military equipment. The British Army has been training Ukrainian recruits on AS-90 self-propelled artillery guns, and in a training centre in Poland, Ukrainian tank crews performed live-fire exercises on the Leopard 2 main battle tank. Since Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, NATO nations have provided unprecedented support to help Ukraine uphold its right to self-defence.On April 4, NATO welcomed a new member to the Alliance. At Brunssum and across NATO, flag raising ceremonies took place to welcome the Republic of Finland as the 31st member of the NATO family. For many years, Finnish and NATO troops have worked side-by-side as Partners. Operational Update March Wrap Up 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-03-31 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update March Wrap Up 2023We start in Northern Norway, where nations of the Joint Expeditionary Force took part in a series of exercises with NATO Allies and Partners. The exercises included the UK-led Exercise Joint Warrior, which is Europe’s largest bi-annual joint military exercise – and Exercise Joint Viking, which simulated the deployment of troops for the defence of Norway, including amphibious landings from JEF units.NATO Multinational Battlegroups Latvia and Slovakia undertook Combat Readiness Evaluations of their ability to Deter and Defend on the Alliance’s Eastern Flank. In Latvia, Exercise Crystal Arrow tested the Battlegroup’s ability to integrate into the Latvian Mechanised Infantry Brigade. Battlegroup Slovakia were also put to the test in Exercise Slovak Shield.And finally, in the Netherlands, JFC Brunssum played host to a visit of NATO’s Military Committee. Operational Update March 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-03-17 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update March 2023This month we start off celebrating International Women’s Day. Here at Joint Force Command Brunssum, on March 8th we invited guest speakers from two NGOs supporting women, and hosted a panel to discuss this year’s theme “embrace equity.” It was a good reminder for our headquarters to take a gender perspective in everything that we do.Moving to NATO’s Eastern Flank, on March 10th, NATO’s Multinational Division North based in Ādaži in Latvia concluded exercise Griffin Lightning. This year's iteration of the exercise served as a platform to evaluate the division as a combat ready command. Griffin Lightning ran for two weeks across locations in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Germany.And in Lithuania, the German high readiness combat brigade dedicated to strengthen the defence posture of the Baltic State exercised again. Operational Update February 2023 NATO JFC Brunssum 2023-02-25 | 📽 JFCBS Operational Update February 2023This month we start off in Iceland where on 9th of February, Norwegian Air Force F-35 fighter jets wrapped up their NATO deployment. For three weeks, four F-35s were on standby in case an unidentified aircraft came close to Icelandic airspace. NATO member countries periodically provide Air Policing missions for Iceland, as the country does not have armed forces of its own. This is the second time Norway has sent fifth-generation fighter jets to protect the High North.Moving to the Alliance’s Eastern Flank, where NATO has decided to strengthen its air defensive measures. In support of this initiative, a German Patriot Anti-Aircraft missile system is deploying to Zamość in southeast Poland.And in Estonia, tanks train to deter attacks from the sea. Last week, Danish Leopards and Estonian CV90 tanks from NATO’s Battlegroup there deployed to the beaches of the Gulf of Finland. The mixed tank squadron fired towards the open sea, a manoeuvre the tank troopers do not train that often.
