His boat and lifestyle are set up to maximize the amount of time he can spend exploring off-grid: he has 1000 watts of solar panels for electricity, a watermaker to create freshwater, a wood-fired grill for cooking outside, he grows and sprouts some of his fresh food, and he catches the majority of his protein by free-dive spearfishing. Although he does solo sail his boat, he says the liveaboard lifestyle is much more fun when traveling with a buddy boat, and he also takes on crew half the time. He bought the boat for $23,000 USD, and has refitted it several times to get it where it is today. 14 Years Living Off-Grid in a Self-Built Cabin & Farming Tons of Food on the Land Exploring Alternatives 2022-10-22 | Stephanie and Joel share their 14-year journey of building a home from reclaimed materials, living off-grid with solar power, and growing a lot of their own food, from fruits and veggies to milk, meat, and honey.They built their home on shared land using materials they salvaged from the dump, wood from a building they took apart themselves, and whatever free stuff they could get their hands on. They had no electricity in the beginning so they only had candles. Eventually, they got a solar panel and a battery to run lights, and the systems have evolved from there.They now have a wood cookstove for heat and cooking in the winter, 5 solar panels and 4 lithium batteries for electricity (plus a generator to supplement on cloudy days), a washing machine, a propane fridge and stove for summertime cooking, and a thermostat controlled propane stove so they don't have to get up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire. For water they have a quarry on the land which they draw from to fill a reservoir in their loft. From there, the water is gravity fed into the kitchen and bathroom. Their drinking water comes from a well on the property. The toilet is an Airhead urine diverting toilet.The cabin has a master bedroom in the loft and a main-floor bedroom that's split into two sleeping spaces for their kids. They have an open-concept kitchen, dining and living room area, and the bathroom is closed in with a beautiful bottle wall. There's also a sunroom they recently added to the front of the house to bring in natural light, passive solar heating, and to grow food in the winter (with the help of LED grow lights).For work, Joel owns a tree service business, and Stephanie runs an off-grid Airbnb business. SMALL SPACE TOUR - Womans Gorgeous 400 ft² Studio Apartment Exploring Alternatives 2022-10-16 | Farida's 400-square-foot studio apartment in Toronto, Canada is perfectly set up for a creative young professional. She's been living here for almost 4 years and has done a great job of creating defined spaces within the open-concept condo space. She has a twin bed at one end which saves loads of floor space, and a wall unit that provides storage for books and crafts, but also acts as a room divider for a bit of privacy. She has a full-size closet for clothes, a desk for doing hair and makeup, and also for sewing projects. In the living room, she has a loveseat which is perfect for lounging, and a comfy spot to do her cross-stitch projects. In the kitchen, there's a small table for eating or for computer work and a linear kitchen with a surprising amount of pantry storage space. Finally, in the hallway, there's a coat closet, a laundry closet, a bathroom with a stand-up shower, and a bit of an entryway. 25 Years Living Off-Grid on a Self-Built Floating Home Exploring Alternatives 2022-09-24 | Charlie built this beautiful off-grid float home in a remote channel on the west coast and has been living on it full-time for the past 25 years. His wife, Ellen, is a newbie to the lifestyle and joined him there 6 years ago. Together they have lived a quiet life in tune with the weather and the seasons. In this video, we get a peek at their beautiful home and some insight into the systems, the work, and the challenges that come with living this way.The couple relies on solar power for electricity (supplementing with a generator on grey days), they have a wood stove for heat, propane for cooking and laundry, and a composting toilet for their waste. There is a floating greenhouse and some raised garden beds on the deck that provide approx. 50% of their fresh vegetables in the summer. The rest of their food is bought at the grocery store in bulk so that they can stay out for 6 weeks or longer at a time. Their home is quite remote and it's water access only, so have a couple of open boats, and one enclosed boat for travelling in rough or cold weather. For electricity, the cabin runs off a home made solar power set up, with 3 x 100 watt solar panels and a 230 amp hour battery bank. The whole house is wired like an extension plug so it can easily be plugged or unplugged from the power source. For water, they’re currently bringing it in as needed but they will be setting up a rainwater collection system soon. There’s a low-tech foot pump that’s super quiet to operate and requires no electricity. And for heat they've got a big wood stove.This cabin/tiny House was finished in 2021 and it cost approx. $20k CAD to build. A bit more than half of that was the cost of the materials. It has an L-shaped couch, a galley kitchen, a platform bed, a shower and toilet, and loads of storage. The vehicle is a 2003 Toyota Coaster Bus conversion and is complete with a robust solar power system, all-electric appliances (no propane or gas), loads of freshwater storage, and windows on all sides for a 360-degree view. Luke has lived in his cabin for the past 5 years, and his partner Meg moved in about 1.5 years after it was built. The cabin itself is a little over 200 square feet and is very simply furnished with a kitchen, a bed, a wood stove, and a couple of stools. She also made design choices that help keep the space feeling bright and spacious, like painting the walls white, installing mirrored closet doors, hanging minimalist art, and choosing furniture that blends in rather than stands out (like the glass waterfall table and the white storage chest).One huge advantage to Jessica's space is that it has a massive 4-door closet that gives her enough space to store all of her clothes, bags and luggage, shoes, and other possessions. She also has access to a storage locker that allows her to store hockey gear and other larger items.Jessica plans to move into a larger space when she's ready to start a family but says this apartment was perfect for this time in her life. He also plans to add an equivalent amount of wind turbines on the boat for days and seasons when there's less sun. And of course, he'll eventually have some sails and a couple of telescoping masts.The living space inside the boat includes 4 berths, a mechanical room, a head bathroom with a washing machine, a massive galley, two cockpits (yet to be built), and a settee lounge area. 10 Years Building a Wooden Sailboat for Life on the Water - Retired Couple Shares Experience + Tour Exploring Alternatives 2021-10-24 | Sombrio is a 33' wooden sailboat that was lovingly built by Ian (a.k.a. KIM) over the course of 10 years with mostly reclaimed lumber that he collected and milled himself, including Douglas fir, red cedar, and yew wood. The boat has been a huge part of Ian and Sandi's lives: the now-retired couple lived aboard the boat for 7 years, they summer cruised the Gulf Islands for several decades (and still do!), and they also did a massive 2-year trip to the South Pacific from August 2017- August 2019.The boat has a galley kitchen with a gimbal and methyl hydrate stove, a 12-volt fridge, plenty of counter space, and a safety belt to make cooking safer when the boat is underway. The saloon has a sofa with a table for lounging and dining and lots of storage for books and non-perishable food. Moving forward, there's a head, storage locker, and a cozy v-berth with porthole windows and a hatch for ventilation.Sombrio is an Oceania model, designed by Al Mason and built with the carvel planking method. Her three main requirements for the house included having a bedroom she could stand up in, a permanent home office space, and a big kitchen so she could cook for her friends and family. Without planning and researching in advance to make sure these things were in place, she would not have been able to find a legal spot to park. In the hallway, there's a permanent home office space and a massive pantry for food storage. The bathroom has a combo washer-dryer and an RV-sized bathtub. And up a set of storage steps is the bedroom on the gooseneck of the trailer. It has big windows, a storage bed, and a big clothes closet. Exploring Alternatives 2021-07-15 | Rammed earth is an ancient building technique that has been modernized to be stronger, more durable, and energy efficient with the addition of structural components like rebar as well as insulation. It is mixed and deposited into plywood forms, then it is rammed with a pneumatic tamper to squish the earth down, and finally, it is cleaned up with a manual tamper. The wall is built in lifts of 6 inches at a time which gives the wall the striations and lines that are typical of rammed earth.Some of the benefits of rammed earth as a green building technique include the fact that it is energy efficient due to the thermal mass and thermal break created by the insulation. It is also an airtight material which means that there’s little heat loss from a poor air barrier.
