I turned the corner and found this older gentleman all by himself. There's often a great sadness echoed in the music of street performers busking for their bread. This musician is a perfect example. The story of his whole life is played through his accordion. His music was soothing and hypnotic and etched with his experiences - both happy and sad. Arthritis in his fingers and hands had made it hard for him to play they way he wants to.I thought about when he was young and probably the life of the party. In other words, regional folk music. Molam plays an important role at festivals with great dance music but also important storytelling. There is a fast version called moral sing. However, the Thai people regard it as working class music because the songs are about unrequited love or the struggle to work in the heat under the sun in the rice fields,The khaen mouth organ of the Lao people is always played vertically and made of bamboo pipes each with a tiny metal reed insideI have always loved the harmonica sound - but to Hear and See it produced close up like was something really special. This player had mastered the art of breathing in and breathing out at the same time - like an Australian Aboriginal playing his didgeridoo.And if you look closely you can see the musical keys printed on each pipe.
