entry two julie 2025-04-21 | phone call from maxflame retardant materials are required by law when you are bringing a backdrop with you as an artist on tour-- a caveat when hiring your artist friend to paint and sew a 24’ x 14’ canvas as a counterpoint for light. the likelihood of a fire actually occurring and igniting the backdrop is slim to none (though, there was the incident over the summer...)the painting has been fireproofed... i guess... or rather, we somehow obtained a fire certification for it.prior to receiving the painting from andrew, we held a party at alex carmen's studio, lonestar, in the art's district. the painting served as the centerpiece of the night-- unveiled for friends, family, and "industry heads" to experience. carmen, andrew, and max dismantled the piece post; keyan and max delivered it to the depths of our studio. leaving for tour in one day, receiving a phone call from max, a minor oversight, a safety hazard-- hundreds of industrial staples from the sewing process fortuitously left in the painting. a new task pre-tour: the removal. luckily, the bottom floor of our rehearsal studio is a large-scale industrial docking zone, so we had the means to unravel the three asymmetrical panels. hands and knees, pliers in hands, scanning and walking every inch, becoming well acquainted with, consuming and contemplating the complexities of each stitch and stroke of paint or pastel or sweat in which we remove another staple. to know is to immerse is to witness, a transfer from one hand to the next-- you become more attached to something when you build it yourself. or in this case... retract.
