In this webinar, we go over the fundamentals of how to set and hold healthy boundaries with loved ones with religious or political differences, on your terms, in a firm yet loving way that also invites relational connection - if that is what you would like.
We also discuss mindset issues of shame and feeling like you need to defend or apologize for your beliefs or deconversion.
Additionally, we learn how to name the elephant in the room, "We have different religious beliefs!" without having to make a big scene of it. And also, we address fears you may have of confrontation, and how to navigate situations involving disagreements about religious matters or heated moments.
You have NOTHING to be ashamed of and EVERYTHING to be proud of. The fact that you were able to recognize and choose to come out of a harmful religious environment demonstrates tremendous integrity and courage and is a huge accomplishment. You are a whole person with a beautiful life journey and you owe no one an explanation or apology.
Yet, a change has taken place, and changes can disrupt familiar family and relational dynamics. As those who embrace our healing journeys, it is often incumbent upon us to redefine acceptable, unacceptable, and desirable relational dynamics.
We discuss practical ways of taking care of yourself and holding your present journey and beliefs or lack thereof with dignity, respect, and pride in situations where relatives and friends might openly or covertly challenge or pressure you.
About Andrew Jasko: Psychotherapist, BACP, IFS Therapist, MA, M.Div. - I was born into a minister’s family and became a preacher and missionary to India, after studying theology at Wheaton College and Princeton Seminary. As an Evangelical, Pentecostal Christian, my relationship with God was my passion, but unhealthy religious teachings caused me an anxiety disorder, sexual repression, and spiritual disillusionment. I felt alone, traumatized, and abandoned. After an agonizing crisis of faith, I rejected religion and spirituality. Unexpectedly, I found healing through practices like meditation, psychedelics, and breathwork that introduced me to profound mystical experiences for the first time, unlike anything I had ever experienced in my previous religious life. I learned to integrate spirituality with rationality and science in a grounded, healthy way. My passion is to help you in your spiritual, religious, or life transition to heal and live an authentic, fully expressed life. I currently study Indian psychology, philosophy, and spirituality at the University of Oxford and support clients in healing trauma through Internal Family Systems therapy and other methods.
lifeafterdogma.orgIs it the Dark Night of the Soul, or is Your Religion Not Working for You?Life After Dogma2022-01-20 | Many people who lack the spiritual experiences of divine love or hearing God's voice promised to them by their religion are told to hang on and keep believing because "it's the dark night of the soul." This term refers to a period of spiritual desolation and lack that is often believed to be a kind of divine test and right of passage. God is intentionally withdrawing his loving presence, the teaching goes, in order to make your faith stronger. Are you experiencing the dark night of the soul, or do you have genuine and valid doubts that you're not allowing yourself to face? Could it be that there's actually something off or untrue about the spiritual teachings you're receiving or the religion you believe in and that this is an experience (or lack of experience) that all the right belief in the world and religious practice won't make go away? Or is it something you should endure for a while?
The dark night of the soul can sometimes represent an attempt at repressing and denying the reality of our experience in favor of what we wish to be true. It is important that we allow ourselves to ask ourselves and our teachers the hard questions that we may not want to face.

This is primarily because people are trying to legislate extremist religious views. About one-third of the US is Evangelical or Conservative Christian. Many of these Christians believe that abortion is the single most important political issue because they view it as an ongoing genocide provoking God's wrath, WWWIII style, on the United States. In this video, I will go over what the Bible actually teaches about abortion (it never directly references it) and the sanctity of life, debunking and absurdifying fundamentalist religious perspectives and demonstrating how their own views are inconsistent.

Dealing with Regret, Lost Time, and Moving ForwardLife After Dogma2021-10-23 | If you've left a harmful religion, you may feel you've been robbed of the best years of your life and that there's this huge gaping hole in your life experience you don't know how to make sense of.
You gave the best of your time, energy, heart, and maybe career to something that now feels like a lie.
And it feels like it was all for nothing. None of it means anything to you anymore in the present.
Not only this, but you missed out on key life experiences like sex and secular culture, and you have to make up for lost time and play catch up to the rest of the world.
And religious trauma is the gift that keeps on giving. You have to deal with the continued impact of the past in the present as you heal and grieve and learn how to build a new life.
As a result of all this, you may feel stuck in the past; in regret, despair, and anger, not feeling like there's time left for you to experience a meaningful life and not knowing how to move on.
You can learn to relate to your past traumas and challenging experiences with harmful religion and other life events in a way that enables you to feel empowered, confident, and excited about your present and future life.

As a result, people are taught to be hypervigilant about their time and decisions, seeking to attain divine perfection in all things and to avoid the regret of having wasted their life. This can result in paralysis about decisions, an inability to cope with life's inevitable ups and downs, and fear of putting yourself out there again and getting hurt. These perfectionistic, do-or-die mentalities are also mirrored in most modern cultures. How can we heal from these toxic religious and cultural mindsets?

Join our Facebook support group: facebook.com/groups/religioustraumaDeconstructing Evangelical Christianitys View of the Bible: Bible Idol Worship, BlasphemyLife After Dogma2021-08-14 | In its current views of the Bible, Evangelical Christianity is blasphemous, according to its own standards of blasphemy. Those who teach that the Bible contains no errors and is the sole revelation of God commit blasphemy in so doing, ascribing evil and falsehood to the God they proclaim and creating an idol of the Bible. Evangelicals teach that the Bible is the inerrant, perfect word of God, and solely sufficient for spiritual life. They believe the sacred texts of other religions are invalid and evil, and other religions must submit to their ideology. These beliefs force them to ascribe humanity's grossest evils to God, since the Bible ascribes many gross evils to God, such as genocide, sexual repression, slavery, and hellfire torture. The Bible also contains many obvious errors, and to proclaim that it does not is to falsely speak for the "God of Truth."
Moreover, the Bible represents the ideas of a small set of ethnic peoples living in the ancient near east - especially Israelite, Greek, and Roman peoples. Proclaiming the Bible to be universal truth for all people is racist and colonialist. It results in the rejection of God in other sacred texts and expressions outside of the narrow confines of the Christian tribe. For many other reasons covered in this video, Evangelical Christianity fails to uphold the high view of God it proclaims, because of its fundamental ideologies about the Bible that it defines itself by as a religious sect.

By his own standards of justice, God is the worst criminal. He is in fact diabolical. Arguments that human conceptions of justice do not apply to God are cop-outs. Those who design laws and enforce them are more accountable than anyone else. God projects his guilt onto humanity and disavows his responsibility for his sins. The person who hired the hitman is more guilty of murder than the hitman. If you fear going to hell, and if hell does in fact exist, take comfort that you will be spending eternity there with God.

Similar rituals exist in other cults. The prayer is a psychologically manipulative rite that functions to relieve anxiety by inviting a strongman to take over your soul, to give up your responsibility, and to surrender your agency to the community, its text, and deity. This is an abusive, psychologically damaging practice.
The prayer translated into its manipulations:
1. "I confess I'm a sinner" = I am powerless, broken. I need to be saved from myself and a maniacal universe. Disempowerment, low self-view, self-degradation.
2. " Forgive me" Emotional repression, not real forgiveness. Asking forgiveness for things that aren’t your fault!
3. "Jesus is Lord" = my agency isn’t enough, take away my responsibility. I can’t work through my problems. I need an easy doctrinal solution that shuts down all ambiguity and confusion.
4. "Come into my heart and take over my life" I surrender and invite a spirit to possess me. Take me over. I can’t trust myself. I need to merge to be healed. Losing yourself, giving up your identity.
Initiations take place during the group ritual of the altar call, a ritual that creates a sense of panic and utilizes other psychological techniques to convince people they need to join the cult community.
The Altar Call: Preachers call people to go up to the altar in front of the community to pray the sinner's prayer. They incite fear, creating panic instead of inspiring people to make an informed decision, triggering a fight, flight, or freeze response. They create paranoia, teaching that the world is far more dangerous than it is. This inflates your problems to a universe-sized proportion, so you need an infinite deity to solve them. These practices induce obsessive-compulsive (OCD) thought-stopping and confession that reinforce anxiety and alter the way the brain functions.
The prayer creates the anxiety it promises to relieve!

This can result in rage and a feeling of worthlessness, low self-esteem, and trying to find our sense of self-worth through the acceptance of others. This can never work, for worth has to do with knowing who we are, a sense of inner belonging. Once we learn to come into contact with what makes us feel alive, our essential nature, and living that out in the world, we become less affected by the reactions of others. We are not sinful but whole and worthy of love at the core. Learn how to heal and come into contact with yourself in this video.

Sexually oppressive teachings function as a psychological and spiritual curse. A curse is an ideology, energy, or intention that is used to harm or control. When we surrender our bodily agency to an outsider, we lose access to our creativity and aliveness. Sexuality is tied to our spiritual vitality - it includes our sense of who we are, our power and confidence, and how we express ourselves. This harmful religious teaching torments devoted Christians, people who are questioning their beliefs, and those who have left the religion. It is impossible to know whether or not you have committed this sin because the teaching is ambiguous. Therefore, people live in mental torment wondering whether they have committed it or being convinced they have committed it and there is nothing they can do. Let's debunk this doctrine and help you find relief, whether you are a Christian, someone simply questioning and experiencing spiritual disillusionment, or no longer identify with Christianity.

In this seminar, we will begin the healing process, addressing harmful religious teachings and practices. Formerly a minister, I help people heal from traumatic religion. This seminar will also address narratives about sexual morality that impact all of us who live in a society influenced by Judeo-Christian norms. Religious treatment of sex may be the most common type of sexual abuse in our world. Many of us were taught that our basic sexual impulses are sinful, even punishable by hell. Rejection of sexuality can also impact us in areas of life not directly related to sex, stifling our creativity and ability to relate to ourselves and other people. By addressing our experience of religious teachings and practices, we can begin the process of reclaiming sexuality from religion. This event is also intended for helping professionals (therapists, clergy, sex coaches) who work with people struggling with sexuality because of experiences with a religious tradition.
