It had become very tacky, everyone looked jaded, and I kept hearing that all the girls had gone to Phuket. So, that's where I went. I loved Phuket in 1992. It's now an overused cliche, but it really was like paradise. Patong had just enough tourist infrastructure to make it fun and comfortable, but it certainly wasn't busy. I went back in 1996 and everything had changed. The prostitutes and sex tourists had arrived, there were lots of tourists, and Patong had started to get really tacky. I avoided Patong and spent my entire vacation at Kata beach, which was almost deserted back then. As a newly qualified scuba diver, I spent most of my time diving and used the Kata Beach dive shop. It was run by an Englishman called Alan, but I don't think it exists any more.That 1996 trip really put me off Phuket and I decided never to go again, instead spending my vacation time in Thailand at Khaolak. However, my brother ended up buying a house in Phuket and I went back to the island - normally at Christmas time - to attend family gatherings. My parents are no longer with us, but my brother invited me over to his place for Christmas in 2023. Thus, it was necessary to make another trip to Phuket. I can't say I was looking forward to going to Phuket, but I was keen to see my brother and also interested to see what Phuket looks like these days.
