Each Step I Take
updated
Of the beautiful murm’ring sea;
I saw the great crowds as they thronged the way
Of the Stranger of Galilee;
I saw how the man who was blind from birth,
In a moment was made to see;
The lame was made whole by the matchless skill
Of the Stranger of Galilee.
Refrain 1-3:
And I felt I could love Him forever,
So gracious and tender was He!
I claimed Him that day as my Savior,
This Stranger of Galilee.
His look of compassion, His words of love,
They shall never forgotten be;
When sin-sick and helpless He saw me there,
This Stranger of Galilee;
He showed me His hand and His riven side,
And He whispered, “It was for thee!”
My burden fell off at the pierced feet
Of the Stranger of Galilee.
I heard Him speak peace to the angry waves,
Of that turbulent, raging sea;
And lo! at His word are the waters stilled,
This Stranger of Galilee;
A peaceful, a quiet, and holy calm,
Now and ever abides with me;
He holdeth my life in His mighty hands,
This Stranger of Galilee.
Come, ye who are driven and tempest-tossed,
And His gracious salvation see;
He’ll quiet life’s storms with His “Peace, be still!”
This Stranger of Galilee;
He bids me to go and the story tell—
What He ever to you will be,
If only you let Him with you abide,
This Stranger of Galilee.
Refrain 4:
Oh, my friend, won’t you love Him forever?
So gracious and tender is He!
Accept Him today as your Savior,
This Stranger of Galilee.
From north to south, and east to west.
Good works for sin can ne'er atone,
Christ is redemption, peace and rest.
In Christ alone, we brothers are,
One race, one nation of His Word.
One brotherhood is globular
Through the new birth in Christ, our Lord.
All sons of men, one in the Lord,
His glorious kingdom build in peace.
Love marks these brothers of His Word
And brotherhood does e'er increase.
The Saviour brings true brotherhood,
Christ died, men to redeem in love.
And sanctify them through His blood,
For endless brotherhood above.
God is love!
Let heav’n and earth their praises bring,
God is love!
Let every soul from sin awake,
Each in his heart sweet music make,
And sing with us for Jesus’ sake
For God is love!
Chorus:
God is love! God is love!
Come let us all unite to sing that God is love.
O tell to earth’s remotest bound,
God is love!
In Christ we have redemption found,
God is love!
His blood has washed our sins away,
His Spirit turned our night to day,
And now we can rejoice to say
That God is love!
How happy is our portion here,
God is love!
His promises our spirits cheer,
God is love!
He is our sun and shield by day,
Our help, our hope, our strength and stay;
He will be with us all the way;
Our God is love!

Come and let us all unite to sing
That God is love!
Heav'n and earth their praises bring,
God is love!
Gott ist die Liebe, lässt mich erlösen;
Gott ist die Liebe, er liebt auch mich.
Drum sag ich noch einmal: Gott ist die Liebe!
Gott ist die Liebe, er liebt auch mich.
Love everlasting, from God the Father,
Love overflowing, for you and me.
Love everlasting, with grace abounding,
Love overflowing, for you and me.
Sin held me captive in helpless bondage,
No earthly power could set me free.
Love everlasting, with grace abounding,
Love overflowing, for you and me.
Jesus my Saviour, died for my ransom,
Jesus my Saviour, co'ered all my shame.
Love everlasting, with grace abounding,
Love overflowing, for you and me.
Come and let us all unite to sing
That God is love!
Heav'n and earth their praises bring,
God is love!
Now I will praise You, Love everlasting,
Now I will praise You my whole life through.
Love everlasting, with grace abounding,
Love overflowing, for you and me.
Now I will praise You, Love everlasting,
Now I will praise You my whole life through.
Take Thou my hand, dear Father, and lead Thou me,
Until my journey endeth, eternally.
Alone I will not wander one single day;
Be Thou my true companion and with me stay.
O cover with Thy mercy my poor, weak heart!
Let every thought rebellious from me depart.
Permit Thy child to linger here at Thy feet,
And blindly trust Thy goodness with faith complete.
Tho' naught of Thy great power may move my soul,
With Thee thro' night and darkness I reach the goal.
Take then my hands, O Father, and lead Thou me,
Until my journey endeth eternally.
My Guide, my Light.
(German) So nimm denn meine Hände und führe mich
Bis an mein selig Ende und ewiglich!
Ich kann allein nicht gehen, nicht einen Schritt;
Wo Du wirst gehn und stehen, da nimm mich mit.
O take my hand and lead me, my Guide, my Light,
My path is rough and narrow in life's dark night.
Your hand will safely hold me through night and day,
You are my true companion, O with me stay.
You cover me with mercy and cleanse my heart,
Your goodness fills my being in every part.
And with Your hand to guide me I'm not alone.
Your presence lights my pathway until I'm at Home.
As step by step we travel to reach the goal,
Our songs of faith will echo and feed my soul.
So take my hand and lead me until I see
The heav'n where You receive me eternally.
I bid farewell to anxious fears, my needs are all supplied.
To meadows green and fair, where rich abundance grows,
He leads me with His gentle hand and guards me from my foes.
(German) So lang mein Jesus lebt, und seine Kraft mich hebt,
Mus Furcht und Sorge von mir fliehn, mein Herz in Lieb erglühn.
(English) As long as my Jesus lives, and His power lifts me,
Fear and sorrow must flee from me, my heart glows in love.
Dear Shepherd, if I stray, my wand’ring feet restore
To Thy fair pastures guide my way and let me rove no more.
To Him my praise shall flow, my Saviour and my guide.
To Him my praise shall flow, for Jesus loves me this I know;
This thought is Paradise.
_________________________
I. While my Redeemer's near, My shepherd and my guide,
I bid farewell to anxious fear, My wants are all supply'd.
II. To ever-fragrant meads, Where rich abundance grows,
His gracious hand indulgent leads, And guards my sweet repose.
III. Along the lovely scene, Cool waters gently roll,
And kind refreshment smiles serene, To cheer my fainting soul.
IV. Here let my spirit rest; How sweet a lot is mine!
With pleasure, food, and safety blest; Beneficence divine!
V. Dear shepherd, if I stray, My wand'ring feet restore,
To thy fair pastures guide my way, And let me rove no more.
VI. Unworthy, as I am, Of thy protecting care,
Jesus, I plead thy gracious name, For all my hopes are there.
And through its portals gleaming
A radiance from the cross afar,
The Saviour’s love revealing.
Refrain:
O depth of mercy! Can it be
That gate was left ajar for me?
For me! (For me!) For me! (For me!)
Was left ajar for me!
That gate ajar stands free for all
Who seek through it salvation;
The rich and poor, the great and small,
Of every tribe and nation.
Press onward, then, though foes may frown,
While mercy’s gate is open;
Accept the cross, and win the crown,
Love’s everlasting token.
Beyond the river’s brink we’ll lay
The cross that here is given,
And bear the crown of life away,
And love Him more in Heaven.
1. My God, where shall I wend my flight?
Ah, help me on upon the way;
The foe surrounds both day and night
And fain my soul would rend and slay;
Lord God, Thy Spirit give to me,
Then on Thy ways I’ll constant be
And, in Life’s Book, eternally.
2. When I in Egypt still stuck fast,
And traveled calm broad paths of ease,
Then was I famed, a much-sought guest,
The world with me was quite at peace;
Enmeshed was I in Satan’s gauze,
My life abomination was
Right well I served the devil’s cause.
3. But when I turned me to the Lord,
And gave the world a farewell look,
Sought help against the evil horde,
The lore of antichrist forsook;
Then was I mocked and sore defamed,
Since Babel’s councils I now disdained;
The righteous man is e’er disclaimed!
4. As one may read of Abel, famed,
Zacharias too – recall it well –
And Daniel too, whom bad men framed
So that he among fierce lions fell;
So were the prophets treated all,
Christ Jesus too – it is good to recall –
Nor were the prophets spared this call.
5. I’d rather choose the sorrow sore,
And suffer as of God the child
Than have from Pharaoh all his store,
To revel in for one brief while;
The realm of Pharaoh cannot last,
Christ keeps His kingdom sure and fast;
Around His child his arm He casts.

1 O God and Father, Thee we bless,
Thy goodness ever praise addressing,
That Thou, O Lord, with graciousness,
Anew us kindly manifesting,
Hast led us thus together, Lord,
To us admonish through Thy living Word;
For this grant grace and constant blessing!
2 Open Thy servants' lips, O Lord,
And grant them wisdom, and Thy power,
That they rightly may speak Thy Word,
That holy lives may spring and flower
And glorify Thee for Thy good,
O grant us hunger for such sacred food;
This is our fervent pray'r this hour!
3 An understanding mind impart,
Inspire us, Lord, we here do pray Thee,
That Thy Word known within our hearts,
In holy lives may ever praise Thee;
And in true righteousness, that we,
Thy gracious Word so heeding constantly,
May undeceived obey and serve Thee!
4 Thine only is the kingdom, Lord,
Thine only is the power given;
Within Thy church with one accord
Thy name we praise, and raise to heaven!
And from our heart's depth, Lord, we pray,
Be with us in this hallowed hour today,
Through Jesus Christ, our Savior, Amen! Amen.

The Father we will ever praise,
Who us redemption brought;
In heaven high our thanks we’ll raise,
Through Christ’s death we are bought,
Whom God hath us in mercy giv’n
From sin to reconcile;
That we by faith should live in Him,
As His obedient child.
In His Son, God has left us here
Example we should heed,
That in like fashion, we with fear,
Should suffer patiently,
As us enjoins the Word of God,
To help Christ bear reproach;
In Hebrews it to us is taught,
Through God, the Holy Ghost.

1. I will delight in singing,
In God o’erjoys my heart;
For grace He is me bringing,
That I from death depart
Which lasting ever, hath no end;
I praise Thee Christ from heaven,
Who dost my grief attend.
2. Him God to me sending,
Example and true light,
Who me, e’er my life’s ending,
Doth to His kingdom cite;
That I with Him have endless bliss,
And from my heart may love Him,
And all His righteousness.
7. Christ, then, would I be praising,
Who patience shows to all,
With friendship us embracing,
Moved by His grace withal;
His love to all men shows He, too,
In likeness to His Father,
Which no one false will do.
9. Christ no one is co-ercing
His glory-world to share;
They heaven are traversing
Who willingly prepare,
Through faith and baptism rightly wrought,
Repentance, with hearts holy;
For them is heaven bought.
10. Christ, in His blood thus shedding,
Which He did willingly,
And His great task not dreading,
This would He have us see,
Us with His holy power endows;
For who Christ’s love constraineth,
In holy likeness grows.
12. Where Christ’s love is abiding,
Is spared the enemy,
And Christ proclaims this tiding
To all who heirs would be;
That who shows mercy lovingly
And keeps His Lord’s clear teaching,
Is glad eternally.
13. All shall be judged by Jesus Christ,
Yet none does He accuse,
Who falsely hate the life of love,
The Word of God confuse;
Until the final judgment day,
When those who scorn He will repay,
Their hope of heav’n refuse.
14. All love abides in Jesus Christ.
He knows no scorn or hate.
His servants follow in His steps,
And daily demonstrate
His life of light, His life of love,
His wondrous joy, the witness of
A heart compassionate.
15. Those hate and envy harb’ring,
Cannot true Christians be;
And those who evil, inj’ring,
Fists strike enmity;
Before our Lord to kill and thieve,
Blood innocent they’re shedding
In base hypocrisy.
16. Thus shall men be apprizing
Those who with Christ are not,
Who Christian rules despising,
With Belial’s kind do plot,
Ev’n as did Cain in sin o’erthrow,
When God owned Abel’s offering;
And hence must suffer woe.
17. Herewith shall I be closing;
Observe, saints, one and all,
It is not indisposing
To notice Adam’s fall,
Who, too, received the tempter’s voice,
His God was disobedient,
And death became His choice.
18. So those who Christ withstanding,
Whom worldly lust ensnares,
Shall likewise find their ending;
No godly love is theirs.
So closet here this hymn, indeed;
With Christ I am remaining,
Who knows and meets my need. Amen.

When Christ with His true teaching came,
He taught the band He’d gathered in,
That each the cross with patience deign
To daily carry after Him.
Christ said, My dear disciples, hear,
You shall always be vigilant;
And in the earth love nothing dear’r,
Than Me, my Word obedient.
The world upon you will unloose
Ans cast revilement, insult, too,
Disperse you, saying in excuse,
That Satan dwelling has in you.
When men you now revile, disdain,
For my sake persecute and smite,
Be joyful, your reward and gain
At heaven's throne I will requite.
Behold me, I, the Son of God,
At all times have been doing good;
Most innocent, these ways I trod,
And yet at last they shed my blood.
O Christ, Thy people help alway
Who follow faithful after Thee,
That through Thy bitter death, they may
Form all their need redeemed be.
Praise to Thee, God, in Thy great throne,
And to Thine own beloved Son,
And Holy Spirit, praise through whom
Be many to Thy kingdom drawn.

You Christian brothers, together,
Come hear a truthful song,
Full highly praised names,
Which are related of God’s Son;
The Scriptures search as the Spirit leads,
So to confess and in truth own,
That which was from beginning is He.
In the first place, will you notice,
How Christ is the Word of God,
Through whom the Father worked,
As from the beginning we’re taught;
When God created the heavens and earth,
This Word with God was in concord,
One with the Father as one.
We own according to Scripture,
He that hath ears let him hear,
That from eternity He is sure;
Who of His birth can speak clear?
He only God's image does assure,
The radiance of His glory,
A reflection of His being, pure.
Out of the mouth of th' Almighty,
Is the Word from eternity,
And the Word with God was in unity,
The Word was God, John did see;
He the great wisdom of God ever is,
Born from th' eternal Father,
To redeem us from death - thus through His.
This Rod in Zion was firmly set,
As planted of the Lord well,
High, noble, above all prophets,
The righteous Emmanuel.
He is the Word of true righteousness,
A true and rightful Prince of Peace,
As Isaiah does say and confess.
This Son most worthy and honorable,
Who in Godly form was still,
Did there Himself thus abase, humble,
Foll'wing His own Father's will,
He on Himself took a servant's form,
That in example, He bid us,
His footsteps to follow, conform.
All the more that here is written,
Of this Son most excellent,
Confess, we too, in addition,
The Old and New Testament;
He God is over all eternally,
In his own letter to the Romans,
Has Paul this explained carefully.
This, then, I have not regretted,
Thus to have written this song,
For my dear, true fellow - comrades,
This out of love to prolong;
So take the best of this short song,
Should one of Christ all be telling,
My song then should be far too long.

Come unto me, saith God’s own Son,
Ye heavy laden and undone,
With sin’s hard burden dealing;
Ye youth and elders, women, men,
I want to help you, for I can
Soon all your ills be healing.
My yoke is sweet, my burden light,
Whoe’er it bears with me aright,
The fires of hell shall flee from;
I’ll help him faithfully, it bear,
That through myself he gain as heir,
The eternal heav’nly kingdom.
What I did, what I suffered here,
In life, early and late did bear,
That shall you too be doing;
Yes, what men think, and say and do,
That shall work out for good anew,
When God's will they're pursuing.
Gladly the world would too be saved
If scorn and pain need not be braved,
Which all true Christians suffer;
Nor can it, may other be;
Therefore yield himself willingly,
Who'd shun hell's pang forever.
Therefore, mark well, ye Christian band,
Ye who to God committed stand,
Your effort ne'er be ruing;
To God's most holy Word adhere,
This is the soul's treasure most dear;
God is your joy renewing.

There are two ways, in this, our day, One narrow and the other broad;
Who now will go the narrow way Will be despised by all abroad.
This plainly God’s word teaches us, The narrow entrance way go in;
Straight is the gate, who enters thus, Must first endure great suffering.
There—after, there’s eternal rest, Therefore, O man, Thy way prepare;
Wilt thou be in God’s kingdom blessed Eternally with righteous there.
After this time nought shall transpire But peace and joy eternally;
The righteous then, this shall acquire Who God’s will honor constantly.
But he who the broad way shall go, The stairs to hell, this is the same;
He now is lost, God’s wrath shall know, But blessed is he who’s born again.
To him hath God prepared, impearled A crown eternity shall hold;
It shall not pass away, O world, Away then, with your gain and gold.
O, take the straight and narrow way That thou the lasting crown obtain;
Which God doth but His church convey Which He hath cleansed from sin and stain.
Therefore away with all man’s gain, Desire, vain pomp, and arrogance;
Turn sharp away from all known sin, So thou be known as God’s child hence.
Nought other can the way become, Who will eternal suffering flee;
Must righteous be, this is the sum, Go on your way, nor fancy see.
Press toward the mark till endless day, For who the prize at last will gain;
All must forsake upon this way Would he the lasting crown obtain.

O God, do Thou sustain me,
In grief and sore duress
Pride counter which disdains Thee
And comfort my distress.
O Lord let me find mercy
In bonds and prison bed
Men would seek to devour me
With guile and controversy
Save me from danger dread!
Thou wilt never forsake me
This firmly I believe
Thy blood Thou hast shed freely
And with it washed me.
Therein my trust is resting
In Christ, God's only Son
On him I am now building
In tribulation trusting
God will me not disown!
Thy Word to us was given
To bring salvation nigh;
Who doth from evil hasten,
His flesh will then deny;
For we see not our failing
Until God's Word, so clear,
Through grace this is revealing,
Our sins removes, and healing,
Redeems from want and fear.
To die and to be living
Until my end I see
To Thee my trust I'm giving
Thou wilt my helper be
Soul, body, child companion
Herewith commit I Thee
Come soon, Lord, come and take me
From ruthless men do save me
Be honour e'er to Thee.

1. Pardon me, O my God, That I, dust, ashes approach Thee,
Yet that which caused my tears to flow Was the remembrance of suff’ring;
The cruel death of Thy martyrs, Defenseless lambs, altogether,
Innocent, led to the water and fire, To the sword and beast’s devouring;
There to suffer and there to die For Thy name’s sake most holy;
There to suffer and there to die, For Thy name’s sake, O my God!
2. Howe’er I joy contemplated, As I their confidence seeing,
In Thy great grace as they fought valiantly Thru the strait gate all foreseeing
Ah! How I often did wish then, To be a partaker with them,
My soul went with them to prison and then In the tribunal I stayed them,
There to suffer and there to die For Thy name’s sake most holy;
There to suffer and there to die, For Thy name’s sake, O my God!
3. Patiently bear, I besought them, Without gainsaying or flinching;
Suffer the sentence of death urging them At the place of execution,
Scaffold and stake, saying to them, Fight valiantly, sisters, brethren,
The crown awaits you – and died thus with them, So great my love bound up with them,
There to suffer and there to die For Thy name’s sake most holy;
There to suffer and there to die, For Thy name’s sake, O my God!

Lord God! To Thee be blessing from hence until my end,
That I Thy faith possessing Thee know and apprehend.
Thy holy Word Thou sendest me
Which I thro’ grace and mercy possess and prize from
Thee.
Thy Word received I from Thee, as Thou, O Lord, dost know;
It shall not void return Thee, I hope; strength me bestow
That I may know Thy will, not mine,
In this is my rejoicing, ever in my heart's shrine.
To Thee, Lord, I am crying, help, God and father, mine,
That I in love complying, be child and heir of Thine;
O Lord, my faith make mightier,
Lest fall the house to ruins, where Thy help absent were.
O Lord, forget me never, fore'er with me abide,
Thy Spirit teach me ever, protect, in suffering hide
That I may know Thy comfort rife,
And valiantly may conquer, with vict'ry in the strife.
The foe beat hard upon me where in the field I lay;
He fain from it would drive me, Lord, Thou didst vict’ry
stay;
With weapon sharp he on me pressed,
That all my body trembled from force and falsehood
stressed.
In flesh I am distrusting, it is too weak revealed;
In Thy Word I am trusting, this comfort is and shield.
Dependent on it though hard-pressed
That Thou wilt from disasters me help into Thy rest.
Our latest hour is nearing so must we now it man;
Help us, O Lord, in bearing the cross after Thy plan;
Come with Thy grace boundless, unspanned,
That we may be committing our spirits in Thy hand.
So will I then be parting with comrades mine, indeed,
May God us grace imparting, into His kingdom lead;
That we in faith all doubt transcend,
His holy work fulfilling, this grant He in the end.

1 A sad and doleful care,
This news, dear brother, share,
Which God hath now for me prepared.
A chastening He applies,
My inmost heart He tries,
My flesh in sore affliction lies.
His godly wisdom sure that ever shall endure
Knows perfectly that now I lie In anguish sore.
Help, Lord, I Thee implore that I by grace once more,
After this grievous blow may comfort know!
2 The prophet has averred
With clear and clarion word
That grief is mortal man's reward;
His life ebbs fast away,
Till death him low doth lay
With suff'ring, all the weary way.
Like to a fading flower So is His fame and pow'r,
Like shades of night
Man takes his flight, Continues not.
In state or constant lot
As God himself hath taught;
Now I detect that He deals so with me.
3 The Father's chastenings sore
Most gladly I endure
As Micheas did, the saint of yore.
I by His Word confess
To wretched sinfulness,
The sinful lusts of human flesh;
I, born of Adam's seed, am sinful-born indeed;
Therefore will I right willingly
Chastisèd stand; Accept all at His hand,
Like Job of storied land,
Till me He to Him takes and blessed makes.
4 Ah, faithful Father, Lord,
My flesh has strength no more,
This earthly house Thou breakest sore.
The vile world hates me quite,
For this Thy witness bright;
Thy cross I bear with grief not light.
And yet—adversity! Thy hand Thou lay'st on me,
And presses so my flesh lays low!
Yet rest me upon Thy promise free
Which ever sure shall be;
And praise Thy majesty in all eternity!
5 Ah, Father, God and Lord,
Incline Thy face once more
In this disease and sickness sore;
Give patience, strength, in grace
The brightness of Thy face,
Mid sorrows that come on apace!
That I may constant be, whate'er Thy way with me;
And, not the last, my soul hold fast!
Yes, Father, kind, preserve in pious mind
Thy sons, who sadness find,
In faith and doctrine whole, so prays my soul!
6 I beg my brethren all,
Who've heard the Master's call
My grief and pain now to recall,
And then, before God's eyes
Lay pleasant sacrifice;
Let pleasing prayer as incense rise;
That I may then again, delivered from this pain,
Behold Thy grace, resume my place,
Serve Christ alway, right well the livelong day,
This is my song I pray
With brethren everywhere, in Word-borne prayer.
Amen.

Earth is a desert drear, Heav’n is my home.
Danger and sorrow stand round me on every hand;
Heav’n is my fatherland, Heav’n is my home.
What though the tempest rage, Heav’n is my home;
Short is my pilgrimage, Heav’n is my home;
Time’s cold and wintry blast shall soon be over past;
I shall reach home at last, Heav’n is my home.
There at my Savior’s side Heav’n is my home;
I shall be glorified, Heav’n is my home.
There are the good and blest, those I loved most and best;
There, too, I soon shall rest, Heav’n is my home.
Therefore I murmur not, Heav’n is my home;
Whate’er my earthly lot, Heav’n is my home;
And I shall surely stand there at my Lord’s right hand.
Heav’n is my fatherland, Heav’n is my home.
There’s a city of light ’mid the stars, we are told,
Where they know not a sorrow or care;
And the gates are of pearl, and the streets are of gold,
And the building exceedingly fair.
Refrain:
Let us pray for each other, not faint by the way,
In this sad world of sorrow and care,
For that home is so bright, and is almost in sight,
And I trust in my heart you’ll go there.
Brother dear, never fear, we shall triumph at last,
If we trust in the word He has giv’n;
When our trials and toils, and our weepings are past,
We shall meet in that home up in heav’n.
Sister dear, never fear, for the Savior is near,
With His hand He will lead you along;
And the way that is dark Christ will graciously clear,
And your mourning shall turn to a song.
Let us walk in the light of the gospel divine;
Let us ever keep near to the cross;
Let us love, watch, and pray, in our pilgrimage here;
Let us count all things else but as loss.
