“YOU’RE IN THE WRONG COUNTY” Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-07-21 | “YOU’RE IN THE WRONG COUNTY”On July 13, 2023, Deputy Ricketts observed a vehicle driving on Northeast Jacksonville Road. The vehicle, which was being driven by 19-year-old Jeremiah Lewis, had fresh body damage and was driving northbound in the southbound lane. After Deputy Ricketts activated his overhead emergency lights in an effort to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle rapidly made a U-turn and fled at a high rate of speed. Deputy Ricketts pursued the vehicle, which continued to drive recklessly. During the pursuit, Lewis hit a light pole and a stop sign, causing property damage. Then, a back-seat passenger began opening the door of the vehicle; after Lewis was apprehended, deputies learned that this was a juvenile who was desperately trying to get Lewis to stop the vehicle. After a successful P.I.T. maneuver, the pursuit concluded in the 1600 block of NE 32nd Avenue. Lewis attempted to flee from the vehicle but was quickly apprehended. The investigation revealed that Lewis had six juvenile passengers in the vehicle; their ages ranged from 12 years old to 16 years old. The juveniles collectively told deputies they were desperately trying to get Lewis to stop, but he refused. He also refused to allow them to get out of the vehicle, which is why they were trying to open the door during the pursuit to escape. All of the juvenile victims’ parents stated Lewis did not have permission to take the children away from their residences. It was also discovered that the vehicle Lewis was driving was stolen from his grandmother.Lewis was placed under arrest for Aggravated Fleeing or Attempting to Elude with Injury or Damage, False Imprisonment of a Child Under 13 Years of Age, five (5) counts of False Imprisonment, six (6) counts of Child Abuse, five (5) counts of Interference with Child Custody, Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Property Damage, Resisting an Officer without Violence, and Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle. Before Lewis was taken to jail, one of the juveniles’ family members had a message for Lewis: She told Lewis he put all of the juveniles’ lives in danger but that he picked “the wrong county” to do it in. Lewis is currently at the Marion County Jail, being held on a $51,000 bond.
Car Thief Caught! K9 Carriers FIrst Apprehension Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-06-28 | On June 23, 2023, at around 11:00 a.m., Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies responded to Take 5 Oil Change in the 16700 block of S Highway 441 in response to a report of a vehicle theft. Upon arrival, the victim advised someone stole his gray Nissan Sentra from the car wash next door to the business. The car was last seen traveling northbound on South Highway 441. A short while later, Belleview Police Department (BPD) Officer Hunt located the stolen vehicle near the intersection of Southeast 110th Street and South Highway 441, at which time he began following the vehicle and notified MCSO. MCSO deputies arrived in the area and observed Majed Hack (O/M, DOB: 08/09/1966) driving the stolen vehicle. As deputies followed behind him, Hack turned onto Southeast 52nd Street and into the Mobil gas station, seemingly in an attempt to evade Sergeant Tim Liberatore. Sgt. Liberatore attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Hack fled and turned into a business in the 5100 block of S Highway 441. He drove to the Northeast corner of the lot and, when he reached a set of railroad tracks, got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. K9 Corporal Jarrick Donely and his partner, K9 Carrier, then pursued Hack on foot. After a short distance, K9 Carrier successfully apprehended Hack, and he was placed under arrest. Through additional investigation, deputies located drug paraphernalia in Hack’s pocket. They also located a backpack that belonged to him, in which he had marijuana and methamphetamine, packaged in a manner consistent with selling drugs. Hack also has a suspended driver’s license with multiple prior convictions for Driving with a Suspended License. Hack was arrested for Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, Burglary of a Conveyance, Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Sell, Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Sell, Driving with a Suspended License as a Habitual Traffic Offender, Resisting Arrest without Violence, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was transported to the Marion County Jail, where he remains.
I WASNT EVEN DRIVING Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-06-23 | On June 16, 2023, at around 6:00 p.m., Deputy Robert Bosnyak initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling in the 10000 block of S Highway 41, in Dunnellon. The driver, Christopher North (W/M, DOB: 11/09/1988) initially slowed down and pulled to the shoulder of the roadway. Once Deputy Bosnyak came to a stop in his patrol vehicle, North fled at a high rate of speed. Deputy Bosnyak initiated a vehicle pursuit.North fled for a short distance before coming to a final stop in the 11000 block of N Williams Street. Deputy Bosnyak conducted a felony traffic stop and maintained control of the situation while additional deputies responded to assist. When they arrived, North was instructed to get out of the vehicle and was taken into custody. During a search, deputies discovered that North was in possession of approximately 85 grams of a green, leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana.When North was questioned, he initially stated he was not driving. However, he ultimately claimed he was looking for a safe place to stop the vehicle. North also admitted that he does not have a valid driver’s license.North was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail.
2023 MAP Mirage Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-05-23 | The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), with assistance from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, recently concluded an online sting operation that led to the arrests of 20 men, with arrest warrants outstanding for 3 more. During the operation, law enforcement officers went undercover and exchanged messages with multiple men who were seeking to engage in sexual activity with children. During the online interactions, these men engaged in sexually explicit conversations and graphically described the sexual acts they hoped to perform with children.Fourteen of these men ultimately traveled to locations in Marion County expecting to meet a child between the ages of 14 and 16 for sexual activity. When they arrived at an arranged meeting place, they were arrested by awaiting law enforcement officers. Nine additional men, who did not travel to meet a child, engaged in online communications seeking sexual activity with a child, and some of them transmitted sexually explicit photos to a person they believed was a child. Of these nine men, six have been arrested and three have active felony warrants for their arrest.“I am disgusted and dismayed that there are people in this world who seek to harm innocent children,” said Sheriff Billy Woods. “I will never stop devoting every resource I have at my disposal to bring to justice anyone trying to harm a child in my county. MEET OUR NEWEST K9 TEAM! CPL. DONELY AND K9 CARRIER FIND BURGLARY SUSPECT Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-05-19 | On Wednesday, Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies arrested Eugene Hannah (W/M, DOB: 08/04/1986) for Burglary of a Structure and Petit Theft.On May 17, 2023, at approximately 7:00 p.m., deputies responded to a report of a commercial burglary at Lake Automotive, located at 13501 E Highway 25. The business owner advised that he arrived at the location and discovered a bicycle that did not belong to him near the side of the building. Upon entering the business, he observed an unknown person laying on a couch.Multiple deputies responded to the business, including Corporal Jarrick Donely and his partner, K9 Carrier (MCSO’s newest K9 team). The business owner informed deputies that Hannah did not have permission to be inside the business and that no one else was supposed to be there. K9 Carrier was deployed inside the building to locate the suspect, who deputies knew was still inside.During the search, K9 Carrier led deputies to a locked closet and it was determined that Hannah was hiding inside. Deputies made entry and K9 Carrier located Hannah on top of a shelving unit. Deputies gave Hannah commands to surrender, which he ultimately did. Hannah was in possession of a stolen knife, toolbox, and makeup bag.Hannah was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he remains.Way to go Corporal Donely and K9 Carrier! Wanted Felon Flees - Apprehended by K9 Eli Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-04-25 | On April 22, 2023, at around 12:30 a.m., K-9 Deputy Gabriel Pulford conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 9000 block of NW Gainesville Road for speeding. The driver, who was later identified as De’Ante Chisholm (B/M, DOB: 05/26/1999), provided Deputy Pulford with a photo of a driver’s license that did not belong to him. Chisholm stated he left his wallet at home and did not have any additional form of identification, but he maintained that the driver’s license in the photo was his. Deputy Pulford returned to his patrol vehicle and conducted a records search, which led him to believe that Chisholm had falsely identified himself. Upon returning to Chisholm’s vehicle, Deputy Pulford could smell the odor of marijuana and asked Chisholm to exit the vehicle. After a brief pause, Chisholm drove away from the traffic stop at a high rate of speed and nearly collided with a passing vehicle. Deputy Pulford then initiated a vehicle pursuit. Chisholm fled northbound on Northwest Gainesville Road for more than three miles. He ultimately lost control of the vehicle while turning westbound onto West Highway 329 and collided with a fence near the intersection. Chisholm exited the vehicle and continued to flee from Deputy Pulford on foot. Deputy Pulford and his partner, K-9 Eli, initiated a foot pursuit. After a short distance, Chisholm was apprehended by K-9 Eli and placed under arrest. Additional deputies arrived in the area to assist. During a search of Chisholm’s backpack, deputies located a stolen firearm, approximately 113 grams of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and $750 in cash. Further investigation revealed that Chisholm is a convicted felon, and he had active warrants for failure to appear in two felony cases. Chisholm was arrested for Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of Marijuana (more than 20 Grams), Giving False Identification to a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting Arrest without Violence, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, in addition to the warrants for his failure to appear in court. He was medically cleared and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he remains.
I Got Drugs on Me - Stop Sticks Bring an End to Pursuit Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-04-18 | On April 15, 2023, at around 1:20 a.m., K9 Deputy Anthony Esquivel observed a vehicle traveling 75 MPH in a 45 MPH zone on Northeast Highway 314. As he began to follow the vehicle, the driver accelerated to approximately 100 MPH and turned eastbound on East Highway 40. Deputy Esquivel activated the lights and siren on his patrol vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver, Kaiden Wevodau Johnson (B/M, DOB: 10/24/2001), fled. Wevodau Johnson fled eastbound on Highway 40 for several miles. He attempted to evade Deputy Esquivel by abruptly turning onto Northeast 10th Street Road before returning to Highway 40. Upon reaching the intersection of Highway 40 and Highway 314A, Wevodau Johnson drove through a parking lot, made several circles around a vehicle stopped at the intersection, and then fled southbound on Highway 314A. Deputy Esquivel continued to pursue Wevodau Johnson and utilized his in-car PA system in an attempt to convince him to surrender. After making an additional U-turn, Wevodau Johnson traveled north on Highway 314A to Highway 40 and headed westbound. Master Sergeant Jeremiah Jones positioned himself ahead of the pursuit and prepared to deploy stop sticks, which were successful in disabling three of the vehicle’s tires. With the tires disabled, Wevodau Johnson decided to surrender in the 15000 block of East Highway 40. He was taken into custody and stated he was in possession of drugs. Deputies located a black bag he was carrying, which contained cocaine and marijuana. It was also discovered that Wevodau Johnson’s driver’s license was suspended. Wevodau Johnson was arrested for Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer (with High Speed or Reckless Driving), Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Marijuana, and Driving with a Suspended License. He was transported to the Marion County Jail.
Motorcyclist Flees - Rams into Deputy Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-04-11 | On April 7, 2023, K-9 Corporal Calvin Batts attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a motorcycle because it did not have a license plate attached to it. The motorcyclist, Matthew Price (W/M, DOB: 10/05/1990) attempted to elude Corporal Batts, weaving in and out of traffic, and then by driving between lines of vehicles stopped at the intersection of Southwest College Road and Southwest 17th Street. In an effort to head off Price, Corporal Batts went around the stopped vehicles and positioned his patrol vehicle in front of the motorcycle’s path of travel. After Corporal Batts exited his vehicle, Price accelerated around the patrol vehicle, striking Corporal Batts with his motorcycle. Corporal Batts removed Price from his motorcycle and placed him in handcuffs. After he was handcuffed, Price stated that he fled from the traffic stop because his motorcycle did not have a license plate attached and admitted that he removed it in an attempt to avoid paying tolls while driving to Lakeland, Florida. Corporal Dustin French responded to assist and placed Price under arrest for Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer. Price was transported to the Marion County Jail. Citizens, it’s a bad idea to flee from law enforcement. It puts a lot of people at risk of being hurt or killed. And it makes a bad situation much, much worse. In this case, if Mr. Price had stopped for Corporal Batts, he would have been cited for a nonmoving violation and been required to pay a $116 fine. Instead, he was arrested for a third-degree felony and, if he is convicted, he faces up to five (5) years in prison, a $5,000 fine, a mandatory driver's license suspension of one to five years, and a mandatory adjudication of guilt (which will make him a convicted felon).
Wrong Way! Impaired Driver Goes Against the Flow of Traffic Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-03-30 | On March 28, 2023, Deputy Jeremiah Ricketts observed a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of East Silver Springs Boulevard. Deputy Ricketts conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Michael Parker, who showed signs of impairment. Parker advised he had been drinking and was driving in the wrong lane of travel because the other lane was moving too slowly.Deputy Ricketts requested that Parker perform Field Sobriety Exercises, to which he agreed. The exercises were explained numerous times and Parker attempted the exercises. During each exercise, Parker failed to follow instructions, had difficulty balancing, and exhibited numerous indicators that he was impaired. Based on Parker’s performance of the field sobriety exercises and the additional factors Deputy Ricketts observed, Parker was arrested for Driving Under the Influence.Parker was transported to the Marion County Jail, where he provided breath samples of .196 and .186, more than twice the legal limit.

Fleeing Suspect Caught by K-9 Jet Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-02-23 | On February 19, 2023, at around 10:30 p.m., Deputy Jeremiah Ricketts attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 1400 block of SE Baseline Road for a possible window tint violation. The driver, Chadrick Ruffin (B/M, DOB: 04/27/1990), refused to stop his vehicle and fled southbound on SE Baseline Road for several miles while driving at high speeds. Eventually, K-9 Deputy Anthony Esquivel became the lead pursuit vehicle. Ruffin ultimately came to a stop in the 11000 block of SE 56th Avenue, in Belleview, where he exited his vehicle and continued to flee from law enforcement on foot.K-9 Deputy Esquivel and his partner, K-9 Jet, initiated a foot pursuit and, after a short distance, Ruffin was apprehended by K-9 Jet and taken into custody. K-9 Deputy Esquivel had observed Ruffin discard a small, black box and a cooler as he was fleeing on foot. Deputies located these items and inside the black box, deputies located approximately 39 grams of a white powder containing a mixture of fentanyl and cocaine, and 15 grams of methamphetamine. The cooler discarded by Ruffin contained approximately 355 grams of marijuana, a scale, and numerous small, plastic bags.Further investigation revealed that Ruffin was a convicted felon and, during a search of his vehicle, deputies found a loaded firearm in the driver’s side door.Ruffin was arrested and charged with Trafficking in Fentanyl, Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer (with High Speed or Reckless Driving), Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Sell, Possession of a Vehicle Used for Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Resisting an Officer without Violence. He was transported to the Marion County Jail, where he remains held without bond.
Deputies Track Stolen Vehicle - Driver Apprehended by K9 Jax Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-02-17 | On February 12, 2023, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) received a report that a 2018 white Toyota Tundra had been stolen from Public Storage, located at 9275 S. Highway 441, in Ocala. Deputies responded to the area of Southeast 162nd Place Road, in Summerfield, based on information that the vehicle was nearby. While searching for the vehicle, Deputy Chad Haufler located a white Toyota Tundra on Southeast 49th Lane. As he confirmed that this was the stolen vehicle, the driver, Skylar Adkins, drove away at a high rate of speed.Adkins fled from deputies for several miles until deputies lost sight of the stolen vehicle. A short while later, additional information was received that Adkins drove to the 15000 block of SE 93rd Court, where he was observed by Lieutenant Donnie Medlin. K9 Corporal Calvin Batts and his partner, K9 Jax, responded to assist with the search for Adkins.While running from deputies, Adkins entered a home and asked the occupants to hide him from law enforcement. The homeowners refused and demanded that he leave. After Adkins left the residence, K9 Corporal Batts located him in between two fences, at which time Adkins continued to flee on foot. K9 Jax was released and apprehended Adkins a short distance away. Adkins was then placed under arrest.Adkins was charged with Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Grand Theft (of Property valued at $10,000 or more but less than $20,000), Burglary of a Conveyance, Driving with a Suspended License, Resisting an Officer without Violence, Trespassing in an Occupied Structure, and five (5) counts of Violation of Probation. Adkins also had active warrants for Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Burglary of a Conveyance, and Burglary of a Dwelling. He was transported to the Marion County Jail, where he remains held without bond.
STUCK IN THE SAND - MCSO Arrests Fleeing Suspect Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2023-01-20 | On January 15, 2023, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Deputy Kevin Wilson arrested Stephen Perk (H/M, DOB: 10/05/1986) for Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer and Driving with a Revoked License. Perk also had a violation of probation warrant for Driving Under the Influence.While traveling near the 8300 block of SW Highway 484, Deputy Wilson observed a white Mercedes C240 swerving within the lane, speeding, and crossing over the center yellow line. As the driver, Stephen Perk, turned onto Marion Oaks Pass, Deputy Wilson attempted to conduct a traffic stop with his lights and siren activated. Perk refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed until he drove off of the roadway while turning onto Southwest 88th Court. Perk’s tires began to spin in the sand and Deputy Wilson utilized his patrol vehicle to force Perk’s tires further into the sand, which caused Perk to become stuck. He was ultimately removed from the vehicle. Perk advised he fled because he had an active warrant and does not have a valid driver’s license.Perk was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he is held without bond.

DRIVER CRASHES INTO DEPUTY’S PATROL VEHICLE DURING TRAFFIC STOP Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2022-12-01 | On November 26, 2022, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Deputy Latham conducted a traffic stop in the 2500 block of SW Highway 484, in Ocala. After contact was made with the driver, the occupants agreed to exit the vehicle while further investigation was conducted. Corporal Marton responded to assist Deputy Latham with his investigation. While standing by with the occupants of the stopped vehicle, Corporal Marton encouraged them to move onto the shoulder of the roadway in order to be out of harm’s way if a passing vehicle were to hit either of the patrol vehicles nearby. Moments later, Corporal Marton returned to the passenger side of his patrol vehicle and utilized his in-car computer to gather information about the occupants of the vehicle. While standing in the door jamb, another passing vehicle crashed into the rear, driver side of his patrol vehicle. Although he was thrown to the ground by the impact, Corporal Marton was uninjured and speedily responded to render aid to the driver and passenger who were injured. While it is unfortunate that this accident happened at all, it serves as an important reminder of the need for Florida’s “Move Over” Law. Fortunately, no one lost their life in this case, but far too many emergency workers lose their lives due to the failure of motorists to obey this law. Florida Statute s. 316.126(1)(b) contains Florida’s Move Over Law. This law applies when you are driving and approach an emergency vehicle (like law enforcement or fire department vehicles), sanitation vehicle, utility service vehicle, wrecker, or road and bridge maintenance or construction vehicle parked or performing tasks on the roadside. When this happens, you need to move over or slow down. If there are two or more lanes of travel, you have to get out of the lane closest to the vehicle, provided it can be done safely. If there is one lane of travel, or if you cannot safely get out of the lane closest to the vehicle, you must slow down – and we mean slow way down. If the speed limit on the road is 25 miles per hour or more, you must slow down to 20 miles per hour under the posted speed limit. If the speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less, you cannot drive faster than 5 miles per hour. YOU CANT HIDE FROM OUR EYE IN THE SKY Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2022-12-01 | On Sunday, November 27, 2022, at approximately 7:00 p.m., MSgt. Micah Moore located a vehicle parked at Circle K on HWY 441, whose registered owner, 40-year-old Jimmy Ryan Lain, did not have a valid driver’s license. Lain also had a warrant out of North Carolina for Violation of Felony Probation. MSgt. Moore witnessed Lain enter the driver’s seat and begin backing out of the parking lot. A traffic stop was initiated and Lain stopped his vehicle, let out two backseat passengers, and then fled from MSgt. Moore, accelerating onto Sunset Harbor Road.Lain continued to drive at a high rate of speed, turning onto 441, crossing over CR 42, and turning back onto Sunset Harbor Road. MSgt. Moore was able to position his vehicle in such a way that Lain was forced to turn onto SE 90th Court, which came to a dead-end. After turning, Lain drove his vehicle into a wooded lot, where he stopped the vehicle. Lain then fled from the vehicle, going into the Dell Webb Spruce Creek Subdivision. Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Air-One responded and located Lain, who was trying to hide. Air-One directed K-9 Deputy West and his partner K-9 Rex to where Lain was hiding in the woods. After commands from K-9 Deputy West to come out, Lain began to run and K-9 Rex was released. *WARNING – EXTREMELY STRONG LANGUAGE IN VIDEO* Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2022-10-28 | On October 23, 2022, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Deputy Wilson observed a vehicle driving in the area of SW 484 and the Northbound on-ramp of I-75, with its hazard lights on, and both driver's side tires appearing deflated. As Deputy Wilson conducted a traffic stop, he noticed that the tires were not only deflated but that he was driving on what remained of the rim. Deputy Wilson made contact with the driver, Andres Orjuela-Montealegre, and noticed signs of impairment. When the deputy asked about the damage to the vehicle, Andres stated someone had put a curse on him and that he hit a curb a little hard. He was asked to exit the car. Andres complied, but was unsteady on his feet. Deputy Wilson asked Andres to perform field sobriety exercises, which he initially declined, while cursing, using insults, and informing the deputy that the damage to his car was "paranormal activity.” However, Andres soon changed his mind and decided to participate in the exercises. As the deputy began giving Andres instructions, Andres told the deputy that he was going to "break [the deputy’s] head with a baseball bat" and "Skin [the deputy] alive." Andres continued making similar threats during the field sobriety exercises. Ultimately, Andres was placed under arrest. Deputy Osborne assisted Deputy Wilson in conducting a search of Andres, at which time Andres spit in Deputy Wilson's face while continuing to spout threats and use other colorful language. As Deputy Wilson cleaned the spit from his face, Andres began grabbing Deputy Osborne's taser in an attempt to unholster it. Deputy Osborne was able to gain control of Andres and secure his taser. Andres then had to be picked up to be placed in the back of the patrol vehicle, where he kicked at and struck both deputies. Andres continued his tirade and spit all over the back of the deputy’s vehicle. After arriving at the jail, Andres refused to submit a breath test, stating to Deputy Wilson, "I got your test right here." As a result of his actions, Andres Orjuela-Montealegre was charged with two counts of Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting an Officer with Violence, Attempt to Deprive an Officer of Means of Protection or Communication, Corrupt by Threat against Public Servant, and Driving Under the Influence. He now faces up to 25.5 years of imprisonment and is being held on a $27,000 bond.

Paul Bloom taught a self-defense class, and here is a condensed version for those who might not be able to attend or request one. Lt. Bloom speaks about personal safety, situational awareness, as well as self-defense tactics and equipment! Personal Safety is all about preventing yourself from becoming a victim. The first step to maintaining your safety is taking the time to be aware and assess your surroundings before putting yourself into a potentially unsafe situation. Also, going somewhere with a friend or group of friends can help keep you safe. If you are approached by an attacker, remember that they are after your belongings, which are replaceable in most cases. Creating distance between yourself and the items they want can help you get away! In the event your safety is at risk and you are being attacked, there are several devices that can help you get away. Pepper spray is an effective long-range tool with a lasting effect on an attacker. Tasers and stun guns are also effective but most useful at close range. Other hands-on tactics can also be used in close-range situations. It is important to remember "Hard to soft. Soft to Hard." when striking an attacker in order to prevent additional harm to yourself. Some practical techniques are a Hammer Fist Strike, Palm Heel Strike, Elbow to Stomach, and Eye Rake. These moves can cause an attacker enough pain or discomfort to afford you time to escape. Say Safe and Stay Aware at all times!

YOU CAN RUN, BUT YOU CANT HIDE! Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2022-04-29 | On April 27, 2022, Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies, with the assistance of a K-9 unit and Air-1, located and arrested 24-year-old Abimael Ramos-Rodriguez, 24-year-old Luis Vazquez, and 20-year-old Angel Torres after they went on a multi-day crime spree in the area of the Majestic Oaks Subdivision. Ramos-Rodriguez started the crime spree on April 22, 2022, when he stole almost $4,000 worth of cash and items from an unlocked vehicle in the Majestic Oaks Subdivision. After he bragged to Vazquez about the cash and items he stole, Vazquez decided to join in on the burglaries. On April 25, 2022, the pair went back to the Majestic Oaks area and began going through unlocked vehicles. They also entered a garage where they stole a pair of dirt bikes and two remote control vehicles. The pair then decided to bring in a third team member so they contacted Torres. The three then went back out to burglarize unlocked vehicles. Unfortunately for them, they were spotted on a surveillance camera and the homeowner called it in. MCSO deputies, Air-1, and K-9 Deputy Esquivel, along with his partner K-9 Jet, responded to the area. MCSO Air-1 located the three suspects walking, however, the three got “spooked” and took off running into the woods. K-9 Deputy Esquivel began a track with K-9 Jet, who was able to sniff out Torres. Torres was placed under arrest. Air-1 then led deputies to Ramos-Rodriguez, who was hiding behind a residence. K-9 Jet apprehended Ramos-Rodriguez and deputies took him into custody. Vazquez continued to hide in a wooded area, but you can’t hide too long before our “eye in the sky” and “nose on the ground” find you. Air-1 directed K-9 Esquivel to Vazquez’s hiding spot. Vazquez was given several K-9 warnings and he eventually emerged from the woods and surrendered. Ramos-Rodriguez is being held on a $44,000 bond for the charges of 4 counts of Burglary of an Unoccupied Conveyance, Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling, 2 counts of Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, 2 counts of Grand Theft, Petit Theft, and Loitering or Prowling. Vazquez is being held on a $37,000 bond for the charges of 3 counts of Burglary of an Unoccupied Conveyance, Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling, 2 counts of Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Grand Theft, Petit Theft, and Loitering or Prowling. Torres is being held on a $10,500 bond for the charges of 2 counts of Burglary of an Unoccupied Conveyance and Loitering or Prowling.
OPERATION APRIL FOOLS 2022 Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2022-04-05 | 22 MEN ARRESTED AFTER SEEKING SEX WITH CHILDREN IN OPERATION “APRIL FOOLS” MARION COUNTY, Florida [Tuesday, April 5, 2022] – The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), with assistance from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, recently concluded a sting operation that resulted in the arrest of 22 men. Law enforcement officers went undercover and exchanged messages with 19 men who ultimately traveled to locations in Marion County with the expectation that they were meeting a child between the ages of 12 and 16 for sexual activity. During the online exchanges, these men engaged in sexually explicit conversations, graphically describing the sexual acts they hoped to perform with the child. When these men arrived at their meeting place, they were met by law enforcement officers, who placed them under arrest. Eight additional men, who did not travel to meet a child, had arrest warrants issued for sending sexually explicit pictures to individuals they believed were minors. Of these, three have been arrested and five are actively being sought. “A child’s innocence is something we should all strive to protect.” said Sheriff Billy Woods. “I will continue to use all of my resources to hunt down these predators so they may never hurt a child.” We would like to acknowledge and give our sincerest gratitude to the following agencies for their assistance during this operation: ICAC North Florida Task Force, U.S. Marshals Service, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, U.S. Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations, Belleview Police Department, Dunnellon Police Department, Ocala Police Department, and Gainesville Police Department. Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2022-04-04 | On Wednesday, March 30, 2022, Deputy Christopher Witte arrested Brandy McGowan (W/F, DOB: 09/15/1989) for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. At around 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Deputy Witte and Property Crimes Detective Pamela Thomas responded to the Walmart on South US Highway 441 in Summerfield, in reference to McGowan threatening customers and store employees with a brick and a knife. When Deputy Witte and Detective Thomas arrived, they located McGowan in the clothing department, wielding a pocket knife and making incoherent statements. Deputy Witte repeatedly instructed McGowan to drop the knife, but she ignored those commands. Deputy Witte deployed his taser at McGowan, which successfully disarmed her and provided an opportunity to place her in handcuffs.Through the investigation, it was learned that McGowan entered the business wielding a brick and began threatening customers as she was walking around. She then located a pocket knife for sale and began opening the packaging with a pair of scissors from the store. Once the knife was open, she continued to threaten employees and customers until Deputy Witte and Detective Thomas arrived. After McGowan was arrested, it was discovered that she ingested approximately four grams of methamphetamine earlier in the day. She was first transported to the hospital for evaluation.Upon her release from the hospital, McGowan was transported to the Marion County Jail, where she remains.
Duder, Wheres My Car Thief? Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2022-02-10 | On January 27, 2022, Corporal Luiken received information that a stolen vehicle was in the area of SE Baseline Road and SE Maricamp Road. Corporal Luiken located the vehicle in the area of SE 28th Street and SE Baseline Road. Corporal Luiken attempted to perform a traffic stop, at which time the driver, Clarence Dean Jr., began to flee from Corporal Luiken in an attempt to elude him. After a short vehicle pursuit, Dean stopped the vehicle and fled on foot. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Aviation Unit (AIR-1) responded and spotted Dean climbing a fence onto the property of Maplewood Elementary School. Dean ran through a portion of land at the back of the playground and eventually crossed another fence onto private property. AIR-1 continued to follow Dean and used its loudspeaker to give him several warnings that he had been spotted and that a K9 unit was en route.After several minutes of Dean crossing through multiple pieces of private property, AIR-1 directed deputies to his location on SE 51st Terrace. While K9 Deputy Refaei and his partner K9 “Duder” were tracking to Dean’s location, K9 Duder was deployed to apprehend him. Dean was caught by K9 Duder and taken into custody. Dean refused to identify himself to law enforcement, but he was identified by a scan of his fingerprints.Dean was arrested for Fleeing and Eluding, Habitually Driving with a Suspended License, Resisting without Violence, and Trespassing on School Grounds. The Ocala Police Department (OPD) also responded to charge him with Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle. Dean was transported to the Marion County Jail with a bond of $15,000.

K-9 ADELMO HOPEFULLY TAUGHT THIS CRIMINAL NOT TO RUN AGAIN… Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2021-06-22 | K-9 ADELMO HOPEFULLY TAUGHT THIS CRIMINAL NOT TO RUN AGAIN… Being a criminal is a bad decision…running from the police is a bad decision…not listening to K-9 warnings is a painful decision. On Saturday, June 19, 2021, 33-year-old Gregory Lee Linder passed K-9 Cpl. Sullivan near the 1900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., and due to previous encounters, K-9 Cpl. Sullivan knew Linder’s driver’s license was suspended. In fact, his driving privileges have been suspended so many times that it is now a felony for him to even drive. Well, driving with a suspended license is bad decision number one. Bad decision number two is when a traffic stop was attempted and Linder decided to flee. K9 Cpl. Sullivan initiated a vehicle pursuit that persisted for approximately 6 and ½ minutes. A successful PIT (Precision Immobilization Technique) maneuver was performed and Linder lost control of the vehicle, but he did not stop there. Here comes his third decision that became the most painful one…Linder fled from his vehicle and K-9 Cpl. Sullivan gave chase on foot yelling K-9 warnings, which Linder ignored. K-9 Adelmo quickly caught up to Linder and apprehended him, at which time he hastily surrendered. OUCH! Lt. McQuaig placed Linder into handcuffs as K-9 Cpl. Sullivan disengaged K-9 Adelmo. Medics responded and transported Linder to the hospital for treatment. After he was medically cleared, Linder was placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail. Linder was charged with Felony Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement, Habitually Driving with a Suspended License (felony), and Resisting without Violence.
ARMED CARJACKERS ARRESTED AFTER CHASE Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2021-06-11 | On Thursday, June 10, 2021, Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Kwik King in the 5800 block of NW 44th Ave in reference to a carjacking. The victim stated was putting air in a spare tire when he was approached by a black female wearing a shower cap, who was later identified as 18-year-old Tanya Denson, and she began asking him questions. While answering her questions he noticed a black male, later identified as 17-year-old Milad Boroojeni, putting his hands on the door handle of the victim’s vehicle. The victim informed Boroojeni that the vehicle belonged to him, at which time Boroojeni lifted his shirt eluding to having a weapon in his waistband and stated it was his car now. Boroojeni and Denson got into the victim’s vehicle and drove off. The stolen vehicle was tracked down to the Pilot on SW Highway 484 and deputies responded to apprehend the suspects. When deputies located the vehicle, Boroojeni intentionally rammed Deputy Archuleta’s driver’s side door and then fled on foot; after a foot pursuit he was ultimately apprehended. However, Denson moved to the driver’s seat and fled in the stolen vehicle at a high rate of speed. A short time later, Deputy Grey was able to locate Denson and another pursuit ensued. Once Air-One was able to have a lock on Denson, deputies backed off and followed at a safe distance. Denson’s tires eventually disintegrated and the vehicle was disabled. Deputies were able to take Denson into custody. After interviews with detectives, Boroojeni was being escorted to jail, and appeared to feel this was all a joke… It’s disappointing to know there are individuals who find it funny after they carjack a citizen and ram police vehicles. None of the rest of us found this at all amusing. Boroojeni was charged with Aggravated Assault on an Officer, Carjacking with a Firearm, and Resisting Arrest.Denson was charged with Aggravated Fleeing with Damage and Carjacking with Firearm.

This guy is a career criminal, he has been found guilty of numerous charges such as drugs, theft, and battery. Honor has several convictions for Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting with violence, Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Depriving an Officer of Means of Protection. If you want to be a criminal in this state….I don’t recommend it. Every one of the sheriff’s offices in Florida communicate with each other. We help each other. MICHAEL BISHOP ARRESTED FOR BATTERY BY STRANGULATION & AGGRAVATED FLEEING/ELUDING Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2021-05-27 | On May 26, 2021, 29-year-old Michael Douglas Bishop grabbed the victim by the hair and slapped the victim with the back of his hand. The victim attempted to get out of the vehicle but fell and Bishop pulled her hair throwing her onto her back. Bishop got on top of the victim, put his hands around her neck and began choking her. The victim pretended to be dead, at which time Bishop got up and left. The victim was able to call for help. Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies along with Air-One began searching for this violent criminal when he was located going southbound on Southwest 60th Ave. Deputies activated their emergency lights in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. Instead of Bishop stopping, so he could be arrested for the violent crime he just committed, he fled from officers. Bishop chose to go at a high rate of speed down West Highway 40 with no regard for anyone’s life but his own, he ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle. The three occupants of the vehicle were transported to the hospital for minor injuries and Bishop was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Bishop, who has been arrested before due to his violent behavior, has been charged with Battery by Strangulation and Aggravated Fleeing/Eluding. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is investigating the traffic crash.

Each of these defendants made arrangements to meet and have sex with a girl or a boy in Marion County between the ages of 13-15 years old. These eight men traveled to a location in Marion County to have sex with the child they thought they had been messaging online. Instead, they were met by law enforcement, placed in handcuffs and arrested. In addition, we had four individuals arrested for transmitting harmful material to who they believed were minors.During the online interactions with the suspects, all of them engaged in lewd conversations with the “child” and described the sexual acts they wanted to perform with them. Deputies located Bowers trying to hide in his vehicle and gave him commands to exit. Bowers refused all commands making one of his worst decisions of the week. After repeated warnings, K9 Deputy Refaei released his partner, K9 Duder who managed to convince Bowers to exit the car. Deputy Bowen located methamphetamine, marijuana and heroin in the defendant’s possession so a few more felonies were added to his rap sheet.Lt. Winston located a stolen car in the area of NE 35 ST and 19 AV. Lt. Winston attempted a traffic stop and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit continued down several roads and ended at the 1100 block of Highway 326 where the vehicle crashed into a ditch. The driver, Richard H. Lebert, fled on foot to a shed on the property. Deputy Sullivan arrived and after repeated K-9 warnings, K-9 “Adelmo” was released into the building, and apprehended Lebert after a brief struggle. The passenger, Andrea Prakhin, was also arrested for the stolen vehicle. Deputies responded to the 6800 block of NW Gainesville Road in reference to information that Kaiden Johnson, who had felony warrants for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Fleeing and Eluding was at the location. Upon arrival, deputies observed Johnson run inside the residence. Deputies quickly surrounded the home while K9 Deputy Refaei and K9 Duder arrived. When K-9 warnings were given, Mr. Johnson surrendered peacefully. (We think he must have seen some of our K-9 videos on here). Either way, he made the right decision and was taken to our “Gated Community”.Deputy Serrano stopped a stolen car in the 5800 block of East Silver Springs Boulevard. The driver, Michael Kiernan, was arrested for grand theft auto. It was also discovered that his license had been suspended so many times that it was a felony for him to even be driving. Kiernan was also in possession of methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. So, he earned a place in our jail and the stolen vehicle was returned. Let’s talk DUIs because this weekend Marion County deputies arrested Doreen Karr, Darla Smith, and Michael Wilson all for driving under the influence. Michael Wilson was also in possession of marijuana at the time of his arrest.Deputy Esquivel conducted a traffic stop on South East Maricamp road where he found Christopher Roman behind the wheel, it turns out Roman had multiple suspensions on his Driver’s License, and was listed as a habitual traffic offender. Roman was given a free ride to jail. Well, we never want to ring the bell, but we have to today because we had guns, wallets, cash, drones and more stolen out of vehicles that had been left unlocked. Leaving guns in unlocked vehicles puts them directly into the hands of criminals. Don’t leave your cars unlocked and don’t leave your guns in your vehicles. Citizens you might recognize this person, we asked for your help identifying him, recently and you did! Hilbert was caught on camera stealing a wallet at the BP Gas Station. He picked it up and put it in his pocket checking to make sure no one saw him. He didn’t turn it in to a clerk or return it to the owner. Now, Hilbert not only are you a thief but you also lied to my deputy. When my deputy contacted you on the phone you gave him your word that you would turn yourself in on May 31 at 7pm. You said you were a “real man and you would keep your word.” Well my deputy waited for you that night and you never showed. So by your own admission Hilbert, you aren’t a real man and you did not keep your word. So why don’t you step up and turn yourself in. DEPUTIES MAKE ARRESTS AFTER LOCATING ILLEGAL COCKFIGHTING OPERATION Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2019-07-16 | On Sunday, July 14, 2019, Marion County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) deputies received information that an illegal cockfighting operation was taking place at a farm at 12585 SW 16th Avenue in Summerfield, FL. When deputies arrived, they located numerous individuals fleeing from a barn that contained an active cockfighting ring. Five individuals were arrested after they were captured while trying to flee the area.Deputies located approximately 60 roosters at the location, some of which showed injuries from having been used for fighting. The Unified Drug Enforcement Strike Team (UDEST) responded and conducted a search warrant at the location. They located a large quantity of marijuana (451 grams), cocaine (4 grams), $5,863 in cash, a firearm and high-capacity clips with live ammunition. Also located were numerous items of drug paraphernalia along with paraphernalia associated withcockfighting.The MCSO Agricultural Deputy responded along with Marion County Animal Control who took possession of the roosters. The listed individuals were arrested and each charged with Fighting or Baiting Animals, a third degree felony, and placed into the Marion County Jail each with a $2,000 bond:Jose Emilio Farinas (DOB: 10/4/1990)Donny Ichel Puerto (DOB: 10/4/1990)Elio Delgado (DOB: 7/28/1947)Raul E. RUNDOWN 6 24 2019 Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2019-06-24 | Alright we are back! On Mondays and Fridays we will be bringing you a rundown of what happened here in Marion County. Let’s get started: Someone entered a vehicle parked at home in the 12,300 block of Southeast 60th Ave and stole a firearm. K-9 Deputy Fretts conducted a traffic stop on a silver Ford Explorer in the 1700 block of Southeast Lake Weir Avenue. The driver, Dadron Smith was arrested for an active warrant for Grand Theft. Search of the vehicle resulted in Smith also being charged with Possession of Heroin, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was transported to the Gold Star Hotel. Someone entered an unlocked vehicle parked in the 14,300 block of Southwest 42nd Terrace Road and stole a tablet, jewelry and cash. Multiple units responded to 17,300 block of Southeast 95th Street Road in reference two victims being shot while driving in the area. While investigating the incident, William Maynard Martin III arrived at the location advising he had shot the victims with a .410 gauge shotgun because the victims was speeding and revving their vehicle’s engine. OPERATION BROTHERHOOD ll Marion County Sheriffs Office, FL 2019-06-14 | Operation BrotherhoodLast Friday, June 7,2019 deputies and detectives from MCSO along with officers from the Ocala Police Department, conducted a proactive traffic enforcement operation in Ocala. The operation was designed to address traffic violations as well as locate wanted individuals. In all, 132 traffic stops were conducted resulting in 30 arrests and 52 criminal charges. 101 warnings were issued along with 21 traffic citations. 3 Notice to Appear (criminal) citations were written and 1 firearm was recovered along with numerous, illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia. We appreciate the great teamwork and effort by everyone involved.
